OMG – So you know when you have no time to breathe and your house is a mess… Always? Yes, that’s continuously me. In addition, do you know what’s fun? Launching a blog. Consequently, do you know what’s more fun? Declaring before I knew how labor-intensive each post would be that I would write one every day. For a month. Ugh… However, I completed my goal!

Day 15 of My Favorite Things: Downtown Bookworks

In other words, this has been a really fun month. Accordingly, I made some amazing brand connections. Additionally, I told the story of nouns (people, places, and things) that I believe in. For instance, these items genuinely have meaning to me and my family. Finally, I have connected with tons of new people on so many different levels and I made new friends!

Subsequently, going forward The Mint Chip Mama will be a weekly blog. Meanwhile, I will continue to feature nouns I really believe in, make life easier, are more “Earth-friendly”, and bring a smile to my face. Moreover, I have some great upcoming posts (in my unique writing style of making you cry and laugh) up my sleeve, don’t you worry.

I will also continue to do giveaways because – who doesn’t like winning stuff!

Likewise, if there is something you would like me to write about – just ask. Additionally, if YOU want to be a guest blogger – just ask!

A little secret: In case you missed it – at the bottom of each post I wrote: “Visit me on Facebook. Follow me on Twitter. Love me forever. #MintChipMama31DaystilBTS” For each “Love me forever” Also, I linked to a different picture of myself from all around the world. I had so much fun reliving my past 36 years. It was fun to remember I did fun and cool stuff before my title was “Mom”. Most important, I hope you enjoyed them too. If you missed one they are all posted on my Facebook page.

Thank You

As I said when I started this odyssey these are all brands I really use and believe in for years. Similarly, I cannot thank the brands and their Public Relations teams enough for believing in me – a new comer to this Mommy Blogging world. Finally, as Travis Birkenstock said “Thank you for taking a chance on an unknown kid”. I look forward to working with you all again in the future!

I love Europe. I love the food. I love the history. I love the culture. And I love that if you stay at a nice hotel you will find a bidet in your en-suite lavatory. Yep. I look forward to many things when I travel abroad and a bidet is always one of them.

Why is this? For those laughing to themselves right now secretly saying “me too!,” I needn’t elaborate. For those who are not — allow me to explain.

Traveling Changes Your Life

When you need to – shall we say – take care of business, very often – shall we say – an acceptable exit strategy – is a challenge. Many opt for wads of toilet paper; however a dry sweep doesn’t always do the trick, as you know. I was of the “wipes” persuasion for quite some time (even pre-kids… I am very cosmopolitan) which provided an acceptable conclusion. However, upon returning from Italy last April, my daily morning routine left me wanting more. I longed for those days in Tuscany: the fresh pasta; the cappuccinos; the clean feeling after – you know. Plus, you know I am an Earth-friendly hippy – I hated wasting so many wipes. Apparently I was not alone in using them – the poor sewers.

My “Business Meetings” Abroad

During one of my – shall we say – business meetings, I was playing around online as I often do and the deal of the day on Amazon was the Luxe Bidet Neo 180 – Self Cleaning Dual Nozzle – Fresh Water Non-Electric Mechanical Bidet Toilet Attachment (blue and white)Luxe Bidet Neo 180 (Elite Series). Always a fan of a deal, I pondered the idea of buying it and soul-searched for a while to decide if I was that cool. I mean – we did already eat dinner after 8pm, enjoyed full fat cheese, and wore a lot of black. We were practically European. But could I do it?

I realized my anniversary was upon us as well as moving into our first house. So yes, I pulled the plug (ha ha, actually it’s called a flapper, I just looked it up) and ordered it “for” my husband.

It’s Like We’re European!

When it arrived, I excitedly wrapped it up and presented it to him. I thought he would be bowled over (HA! Good one me) but he was a bit skeptical. I reminded him of our long walks sans children next to the Arno, our daily mandatory gelato rule, and how nice it was upon our return to our hotel after a big dinner to have the luxury lavatory accommodations we so rightly deserved. His eyebrow was raised but always the good sport he said “why not?” (if you know my husband you know that is not true at all, so allow my creative license).

Bongiorno from Toscano!

We moved into our house and I immediately set up my new bidet. It was FANTASTIC! I mean – if you want to feel like the Queen of England and all. Sitting on her throne (no really, I kill me). I was able to set it up myself in about fifteen minutes using the basic tools I had at home. I was very surprised (and impressed) that it was so easy to do and – Voilà – it worked! I even celebrated by eating some Fiber One to try it out (just kidding).

20140917 Bidet 5

Just Pull It Up!

To use the bidet you simply pull up a small lever (as a bonus it is like a throttle and you kind of feel like you are in Top Gun) which then shoots water from the bowl – up. You can adjust the angle as well as the pressure.

When I was originally researching the bidet I was not sure it would be sturdy if it was an attachment. I have to say – it is very sturdy – we’ve been using it… daily… for almost a year and it still looks brand new. I was also skeptical about the cold water option thinking that would be weird, but it isn’t at all. You don’t even notice the temperature. Even first thing in the morning when I am barely awake and usually have – shall we say – conference calls in my office, the water temperature is fine. I love this product. It is amazing. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It also looks somewhat low-key so it can be there without raising too much interest from your kid.

Lifechanging!

As my mother would say, it “tuch-as a long time” to take the plunge and get it but it was well worth it (hilarious, it’s almost too easy). As a busy mom who really, really appreciates a good business meeting (especially when I can sneak away for thirty seconds alone) this bidet makes me feel like I work for a Fortune 500 company. If only it came with dental.

482,400 Minutes. How Do You Measure, Measure Eleven Months? Day 30 Of My Favorite Things: My Children Now As Siblings

Day 30 of My Favorite Things: My Children As Siblings

The Mint Chip Mama Children As Siblings

@TheMintChipMama Facebook

Last night my husband and I were discussing our disbelief that our baby boy was turning eleven months old today. I was – not surprisingly – gushing about how absolutely smiley and happy and delicious the baby was all day. My husband got a devilish look in his eye and asked me “Do you remember when you wondered if you could love this one as much as the other one?”

 20140910 3

The Post That Started It All

Almost exactly a year ago I wrote my first piece for The Huffington Post titled “Can an Only Child Make Sense of Having Two Children?”. Well, 482,400 minutes ago I was able to affirmatively answer “YES” to this question.

The Mint Chip Mama Children As Siblings

Not only do I love this baby so much I want to wake him up at night and play with him (partially kidding) but watching my two children play together is just about the most wonderful thing in the world. It makes me so happy to have given them each other. It also makes me happy that I get to witness these special little shared moments. They are my favorite moments of the day.

We Seamlessly Became A Family Of Four

As a follow-up to my Huffington Post piece, I admit – as usual – my daughter was right. She became a sister with absolute grace and the biggest open heart. She does take care of her brother. She feeds him, she likes to push the stroller, she always has a burp cloth handy, and she even goes around my house pointing out choking hazards. I have said more times than I can count (laughing, mind you) “I don’t know how I had you without you to help me”.

It astounds me every day how caring and thoughtful she is towards her brother. Or how many good ideas she has “Mama, why don’t you use the carrier when you drop me off at school, it will be easier for you than getting the stroller up and down the stairs”. It’s amazing. My love for her and admiration of her has grown more than I could have ever realized.

The Mint Chip Mama Daughter Feeding Son

I Love Watching My Children As Siblings

I must admit too – the little guy is pretty enamored with his sister. He has this secret smile and giggle for her I’ve yet to see awarded to anyone else. (There is a small possibility I am crying right now…).

The Mint Chip Mama Children As Siblings

So in honor of the anniversary of this post, the eleven month birthday of my son and the four and seven twelve’s birthday of my daughter (she is very into fractions), here it is. I can’t believe I ever doubted it. It is true what they say – my heart grew 100%. Possibly even 300,000,000%.

Reposting What Started It All

The Huffington Post

Can an Only Child Make Sense of Having Two Children?

August 30, 2013

I am an only child.

When I was growing up, it was all mine. The toys were mine, the games were mine, the attention was mine.

I didn’t have an older sister to steal clothes from or an older brother to protect me. Nor did I have a little sister to dress up or a little brother to harass. It was just me and my unhappily married parents.

In some ways, not having a sibling was OK. I never had sibling rivalry, never had to wait my turn and never had to put a sibling’s wishes above my own. But I didn’t see it that way when I was young. I yearned for a sister or brother.

But I Learned It Wasn’t My Only Childness

Recently, after speaking to a friend who is also an only child, I had an epiphany — 35 years in the making. I realized that it was my family dynamics, not the lack of a sibling, which caused my angst. As my friend spun tales of “Three Musketeer” trips to Europe, delicious crepes and fine dining with her parents, I nodded and listened to how nice it sounded to be her when she was growing up.

Until I stopped her and said “wait… that is not what I lived through!”

My parents fought for as long as I can remember. It was bad. They divorced when I was in high school after a long time of staying together “for the family.” I realized as I was having this conversation with my friend that maybe the desire for a sibling was actually my longing for a normal, happy family (which we have now, many years later).

I was shocked. How did I not see that?

My epiphany totally rocked my thought process and it jumpstarted me into thinking about giving my daughter a sibling of her own. My husband and I always spoke of having more children. Our first was getting older and I was approaching the dreaded 35. We needed to get our acts together. I was excited to expand our family, but also a little nervous.

OK, a lot nervous.

Since I am an only child, how would I know how to have two children? Luckily, most of our friends had their second kids by now, so we were easily able to observe them. It seemed pretty basic. The bottom line is this: you love the other kid too. Pretty easy. Yes, yes — a second round of sleepless nights, diapers and all the “baby” stuff you would expect. But as far as this overarching fear I had of “another,” it didn’t seem to plague my friends as it did me.

We began gearing ourselves up to tell our daughter she would be an older sister in October. As expected, she was beyond thrilled. We were giving this little munchkin — who is the epitome of a little girl — her own, real-life doll. “Excited” was the understatement of the decade.

She Is Ready To Be A Big Sister

Over the last few months, our daughter has declared that she will be in charge of night feedings, diapers and pushing the stroller (rock on, we’re going to hold her to these!). She also has shown a tremendous amount of empathy by saying how she wants to pass on her clothes that no longer fit and the toys she no longer plays with to her new baby sister Chloe (no, we do not know the sex, no Chloe isn’t on our short list).

Last week, she told me she will come to the hospital to take care of me, and — when the baby is born — introduce it to our family. Today, she said that she will give the baby her most beloved doll so the baby can have a doll filled with her love. I almost cried.

But She Is Smarter Than Me

This child, this 3 1/2-year-old, is already filled with so much love for her sibling and they have yet to meet. I admire her tremendously for this. I wish I had as much assurance as she does. I wish I knew how I would handle two when my world has been so focused on one. How will I take sides, choose which one gets their way without offending the other, be an impartial juror? How do I understand the daily sibling tangles?

The answer is this: I simply just don’t know.

I guess just like when you have your first — and it hits you like a pile of bricks — you figure it out and do your best.

The books say not to compare your children, to let each child shine in their own way and that your heart does expand to give each 100%. I keep reading because I’m scared. I have no frame of reference for a sibling in my life and it seems in this case, I’ll have to follow my daughter’s lead, loving unconditionally, sight unseen, and just open my heart and share everything I have in there — even my dolls — with both children.

We Are Already On A Better Track

I realize in the end, the one thing this family has going for it that my family did not is my husband and I are in love. We’re partners. We actually like each other (94.5% of the time) and like to do things together. So, I think we’ll make it. One day, we will also go on those “Three Musketeer” trip, but as Four or Five Musketeers. Same idea, just a few more crepes.

The Mint Chip Mama Pregnant Mom and Daughter

Thank you Ross Wallenstein for making these amazing children with me. You and our children are and will always be my favorite things!

You Swing Set Me Right Round, Baby, Right Round Like A Record, Baby. Day 29 Of My Favorite Things: Our Swing Set From Wood Kingdom

Day 29 of My Favorite Things: Swing Kingdom Mountain Climber swing set from Wood Kingdom

The Mint Chip Mama - swing set Wood Kingdom

@WoodKingdom Facebook

I would consider the first day of school the official last day of summer. With that said – that does NOT mean we have to say goodbye to one of my favorite things – playing outside.

Moving To The Suburbs

We moved into our house in January between snowstorm D and snowstorm E of the 2013 season. While most normal people think of paint colors, furniture, carpeting or home improvements all I could think of was buying a swing set for my backyard. My backyard!

The Mint Chip Mama - swing set Wood Kingdom

I Just Wanted My Own Playground

After living in Manhattan for thirteen years – almost four of those with a child – I was busting at the seams to open my door and let my daughter run free. Picture the scene from Funny Farm but not a dog and we have a fence. I started researching a swing set immediately. Plus, a swing set is a rite of passage for a suburban kid, right? The kid plays outside, while the parent watches them from the kitchen and cooks dinner. Wasn’t there a Norman Rockwell painting of this scene?

The Mint Chip Mama - swing set Wood Kingdom

We Headed To Wood Kingdom For A Swing Set

Asking around – all roads led to Wood Kingdom – a store located in Farmingdale with a huge selection and helpful staff. After much research I decided on a customized PVC (yes PVC DY) Swing Kingdom Mountain Climber. Three swings on one side and one baby swing on the other. Plus a wave slide, rock climbing wall, monkey bars, and a rope wall. I was very excited, I mean my daughter was very excited.

While there I kept upgrading to a bigger and better swing set, eventually settling on this PVC one because it required no maintenance. Ever. That was worth paying a little more to me.

The Mint Chip Mama - swing set Wood Kingdom

No More Needing To Pack For Armageddon

What’s that you say? I don’t have to pack a bag of stuff and/or put on shoes/pants/a bra so my kids can play on swings? Wa-hoo! Plus there’s that part about it being great exercise. Not to mention fun. In addition, we got a hammock swing for me and that I fit on the “big girl” swings and can go so so so high! Watch me! Watch me! But I digress.

It’s Installation Day!

Given my daughter’s previous backyard was “going to the park” I was eager to get her new shmancy swing set installed. It was so cool when they arrived. On our driveway we welcomed our partially built swing set in the back of a truck with a gaggle of nice guys who drove in from Lancaster, PA. They assembled it in my backyard as we eagerly watched. And then bam it was up – out the door to play!

The Mint Chip Mama - swing set Wood Kingdom

It’s Everything We Dreamed Of And More

It has been amazing in all three seasons so far. Since it is right in our backyard my daughter can play on it even for ten minutes on a cold day just to get some fresh air and exercise. My son loves the baby swing and having the second arm to separate him makes me feel safe when my daughter has a bunch of friends over and they are rocking out on the glider (an impulse addition that is the surprising star performer) or on the monkey bars.

The Mint Chip Mama - baby

This swing set makes me so happy. I mean my kids so happy… It is so much fun sitting in my kitchen and watching my daughter play on it. I love inviting her friends over after school and having half a dozen kids on it. It is so big, it still looks like ten more could fit! Plus, I love that I don’t have to worry about splinters or up-keep or walk to a park for some fun. The bottom line is – I simply love this swing set.

The Mint Chip Mama - swing set Wood Kingdom

It’s My Favorite Thing In My House, Even Though It Is Outside

If I put as much energy and effort into decorating my house, there would be at least one picture hung on a wall after nine months by now. But then I would have to hammer a hole into my wall – which is too much of a commitment.

You Need A Swing Set Too

If you are on Long Island, I high recommend checking out Wood Kingdom. Besides tons of wood and PVC swing sets, they have play equipment, sheds, trampolines, fences, and amazing toys like Air Swimmers (a remote control fish balloon that is crazy awesome fun).

Thank you Wood Kingdom for introducing me to a great, fun, and safe product. You have become one of my favorite things!

Eruv Pre-K: Day 28 Of My Favorite Things: Back To School – Starting Pre-K

R First Day of School PAS

In honor of my daughter starting her last year of Pre-K tomorrow, I am posting my Huffington Post article from 9/26/2013 titled “It’s the End of Our World As I Know It, and I Feel… Guilty”.

Our world has changed fifteen ways up, down, left, and right since I wrote this article last year in my little 750 square foot apartment on 95th and Third.

So Many Changes

While this amazing little girl may not have changed that much between last September and this September (minus a few inches on her hair and adding a few inches on her height) many things are different in her world. Her school, her room, her city, her Daddy’s job, and that big belly I had last year is now her baby brother (born two weeks after I wrote this).

I am amazed every day at what she says, her mannerisms, and how spectacular of a little lady she has become in such a short time. Not to mention the most fantastic, loving, sensitive, caring big sister. My baby’s growing up. sniff sniff. And I could not be more proud.

Happy first day of school to all the little ones out there ready to bounce on to the bus and to all the Mamas and Papas out there who will be crying in the driveway.

*****It’s the End of Our World As I Know It, and I Feel… Guilty *****

As my husband and I dropped off Rebecca — our 3-and-a-half-year-old daughter — for her first day of nursery school last week, I realized that it was the first day of her 15 year five day scholastic journey. We’ve entered the big time. Basically, she is about to graduate high school and go off to the University Michigan — my alma mater.

I mean college.

Subsequently, I mean we’ll let her decide.

But you get my point.

The obligatory “1st Day” sign was made. We forced her to take the photos we wanted to post on Facebook (I mean save forever in our photo album). The clock struck 9:00 a.m. School was in session. Rebecca didn’t even turn around for the movie scene farewell. She was over the moment.

Pouf -She Was In School

Days pass. As every parent hopes, Rebecca talks about how much fun she is having and all the new friends she is making. The highlight of one day was finding out that one of her new classmate’s middle name is “Rebecca.” Talk about having her mind blown. We’ve discussed this five times.

Everyone talks about life flashing by in the blink of an eye. It was just February of 2010. I was just nervously packing my hospital bag, gearing up to become a first time mom (cue tears streaming as I write this). I was praying with every bone in my body for a little girl exactly like Rebecca. It is amazing to think now how I didn’t know this little girl yet. I didn’t know her personality, the sound of her voice, the feel of her little hand gripping my finger.

Blink.

This little person — who I know better than anyone else in the world — is now in school five days a week. She feeds herself, goes to the bathroom herself, picks her clothes out and dresses herself (“I said a DRESS!”), and even sometimes… refuses to hug me.

And then there’s me: 35 weeks pregnant and about to pack the infamous hospital bag again for our second child, who I know just as little about as I did Rebecca at the same point. I’m freaking out more because I know what is coming instead of freaking out about the unknown.

Time Flies

I cannot believe school has started. It is the end of September and our family has reached a pivotal checkpoint in preparation for the baby’s arrival. I was excited for the return of the routine and the glorious 20 hours a week of activity (not provided by me) for the home stretch of my pregnancy. We have no outside help, so school is my babysitter/day care/nanny/childcare provider. Also, being in her groove would offer some type of continuity so when the “new sheriff” comes to town, Rebecca will have her own thing going on and not feel totally shafted.

I just cannot stop thinking how Rebecca’s time as an only child and as the center of my universe is over — which makes me so sad. She, on the other hand, is ecstatic. This very affectionate little girl, who is SO excited for her sibling to come, has no idea what is actually going to happen. I feel guilty about that. I am sure many of these emotions stem from my fear of almost being the mother of two when I am an only child (something I explored in my last blog post here).

Evolving Into A Family Of Four

I laugh at the small amount of sleep I get now since I know it will feel like a vacation compared to what is about to come. Mostly, I mourn (in-advance) the end of my alone time with Rebecca — something I cherish more than anything in this world. We have fun on our stroller-less New York City escapades, easily hopping in a bus, subway or cab with just a small bag. I know I will still have moments where it will just be the two of us, but it will not be the same again.

Color me hormonal, but each time we read, watch TV or play outside, I think how — in just a few weeks — this will be done with a newborn on my breast, my hand in a diaper, or my eyes slowly shutting and my attention to Rebecca almost nonexistent. I already resent myself for my expected short fuse, for changing Rebecca’s world, and leaving her to feel like a second-class citizen. I shirk at the anticipated tantrums and whining (is there anything worse than whining?).

OK, Game On.

Life is not like a box of chocolates for a pregnant woman with a 3-year-old. My life is like a carousel. And much like the whole summer spent unable to hop on, I can only watch it spin round and round while I get dizzy.

Love me forever. #MintChipMama31DaystilBTS

Day 27 of My Favorite Things: Globalization

Today I did a global experiment. I have friends in all parts of the world. I asked them – via my Facebook page – to take a picture with their phone at 2pm Eastern Standard Time and email it to me. What you see below is the result.

Globalization Is Pretty Cool, Right?

I think it is so cool that I posted this request from my bed in New York at 9am this morning and was able to reach people in all corners of the world immediately. Can you believe there was a time when you could only write letters? Or make expensive long distance phone calls? It amazed me that with the push of a button I got to all of you. Pretty cool, right? Our kids will grow up in a world knowing nothing but this. Amazing. Thank you for your help today.

Ain’t Nothin’ But A Book Thang Baby. Day 26 Of My Favorite Things: Books

The Mint Chip Mama's Favorite Children's Books

PJ Library (@PJLibrary Facebook) Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library (@dollyslibrary Facebook)

Today I don’t want to talk about one brand or one item, I want to talk about many. Here everyone gets a give away! One that will be special for your entire family and will come to your door every month for the next five years! With that said, I want to share with you some of my favorite kid’s books.

The Mint Chip Mama's Favorite Children's Books

Some of my favorite board books for babies

Understandably so, one of the most talked about topics when parents stand around the playground or at a birthday party is books. I am always looking for new books to read to my kids, series I have never heard of, or a friend’s favorite. Sharing my favorites with friends is a lot of fun too. So in honor of school starting – allow me to share my favorite books with you – by age group – so you can try some new books with your kiddies!

The Mint Chip Mama's Favorite Children's Books

Some of my favorite books for age 2+

Our book collection is curated from favorites of mine and my husband’s as a child. But also from articles I’ve read, suggestions from friends, PJ Library, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, gifts from family and friends and book store recommendations. Growing up I was always a voracious reader (yeah – I won Book It. Bragging rights allowed. I remember eating my sweet pizza pie of achievement!), who thought summer reading programs were the cat’s meow. You could not stop me from making dioramas for sport. I just love to read. I want to bring my love of books into my children’s lives and make them readers too.

The Mint Chip Mama's Favorite Children's Books

Some of my favorite books for age 3+

From Goodnight Moon – which we read to my daughter every night for two years at bedtime, to the “Little Miss” series we read now, books have been a huge part of my daughter’s life. In fact, we read three before bedtime (her choice) and used to read three before her nap too.

The Mint Chip Mama's Favorite Children's Books

Some of my favorite books for age 4+

PJ Library and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library are both amazing. If you don’t know about them you need to look them up now and then tell your friends. Both companies send your child a FREE book every month. The catch? They want you to read it. Sounds fair, right? PJ Library sends books with Jewish themes and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library sends secular ones.  Some of the best books we have are from these organizations and I am so grateful for them. I think the thrill I get when the envelope arrives is equal to my daughter’s.

Thank you to Johannes Gutenberg for creating the printing press and allowing the mass production of books. Books – one of my favorite things!

*GIVEAWAY*

Everyone wins today – both PJ Library and Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library send you free books every month!

PJ Library Heritage

PJ Library is a Jewish family engagement program implemented on a local level throughout North America. They mail free, high-quality Jewish children’s literature and music to families across the continent on a monthly basis.

PJ Library is a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, made possible through partnerships with philanthropists and local Jewish organizations. Today, families in hundreds of communities across the United States and Canada are able to explore the timeless core values of Judaism through books and music.

All families raising Jewish children are welcome to sign up.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Heritage

In 1995, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could insure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

Dolly’s Imagination Library became so popular that in the year 2000 she announced that she would make the program available for replication to any community that was willing to partner with her to support it locally. Since the initial program launch in the United States, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has gone from just a few dozen books to over 60,000,000 books mailed to children in the United States, into Canada and across the proverbial pond into the United Kingdom! Currently over 1600 local communities provide the Imagination Library to over 750,000 children each and every month. Already statistics and independent reports have shown Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library drastically improves early childhood literacy for children enrolled in the program. Further studies have shown improved scores during early literacy testing.

Carry Your “Kitchen Sink” In Style. Day 25 Of My Favorite Things: Kipling’s Lightweight Cross Body Tote

The Best Lightweight Cross Body Tote

The Mint Chip Mama - Kipling lightweight cross body tote Joslyn

Moms need a lightweight cross body tote. No question. They need to be hands free and ready at any moment.

For anyting.

The Bag Addiction Is Real

For those of you who knew me prior to having children you will know that handbags used to be a big part of my life. For those of you who didn’t, you will think my only handbag since we met was my beloved Skip Hop Duo bag. Which is – in theory – also a lightweight cross body tote.

It’s funny for moms who live in Manhattan – your stroller is your car and your diaper bag your handbag. But what happens once your kid ages out of her stroller and is potty trained?

What Is The Best Bag After A Diaper Bag?

I asked this very same question last summer. I was pregnant and tasked with entertaining a child who walked everywhere. My main carrying needs were snacks, hand sanitizer, a first aid kit, and a few odds and ends I thought were vital. My summer was going to consist of walking the shortest distance to the nearest playground, bus or subway stop, with only this bag and my daughter. It was hot. I was big and uncomfortable. I needed something lightweight that was pushing-a-swing friendly.

A Lightweight Cross Body Tote Is Your Answer!

I went to the inner sanctum of my closet where high end luxury bags hid in their dust cloths since my move three years prior. Sadly, lambskin would not fit my needs. This meant it was time to shop.

The investigation began (this included interviewing friends, strangers, and lots of googling). Finally, I found the exact lightweight cross-body tote I was looking for – with a familiar gorilla accouterment. Kipling! I saw the display and went ape (haha). EVERY bag was what I was looking for – now I just had to hone in. I settled on the Kipling Joslyn Tote. What I thought would be a “transition” bag has become one of the best bags I’ve ever bought.

The Mint Chip Mama - Kipling lightweight cross body tote Joslyn
It’s the size of a book but it’s capacity is endless!

It’s The Light Weight Tote Of My Dreams!

This bag is amazing. It is lightweight, has shoulder straps and a cross body strap, a huge front pouch (where I keep a supermarket), and two other pouches in front – one a double-zippered pouch where I keep my sanitation station, and the other a flap pouch with Velcro closure where I keep my phone. The back has a huge pouch the size of the bag with a Velcro closure – where I keep my reusable tote (yes I have one on me at all times). Folks, that’s just the outside!

The inside has a sizable main compartment where I keep my “kitchen sink”. On either side, you have a zippered pouch (I keep my gift cards, wallet, sunglasses, and eyeglasses in here) and a pen holder. A pen holder! Never thought about that but I can find my pen in a second! I’ve even become that person who signs credit card slips with my pen. Pretty high class, no? All of this is lightweight and relatively small – given its capacity. It even fits my NKThreads pouch with all my son’s diaper supplies!

What’s in my bag? All of this!

This Lightweight Tote Is The Perfect Transition Bag

I feel like all of us moms look for a cute transition bag that brings a tad of style back into our lives. This is it! Plus – who can resist a bag that comes with a little gorilla keychain? When you go to the store to check out back to school backpacks, get this for yourself. You will be taking them to school, so I give you permission to get a new bag too.

Thank you Kipling for introducing me to a stylish product that lets me carry everything I need. You have become one of my favorite things!

Since I carry around a supermarket for two children and an undernourished yours truly (read granola bar-o-rama) today’s giveaway is right in time for back to school meal planning – a new “Lunchable” type idea from Revolution Foods – perfect for lunch boxes or even dinner! All you need in a little box. Organic, healthy and ready in five minutes? Done and done.

*GIVEAWAY*

Revolution Foods (Facebook, @RevolutionFoods) has generously offered to give away four (one of each flavor!) of their new Meal Kits to four lucky readers!

To win – please post in the comment section below:

What is your favorite handbag story? Romance me. We all have one.

Mine was my first Prada bag – I used all of my camp tips in 1997 to buy it. I still LOVE it and use it all the time.

Winner will be chosen Thursday, September 4th.

Kipling Brand Heritage:

Our tale is a fun one that dates back to 1987, when three designer pals in Antwerp, Belgium stumbled upon a happy accident on a loom and discovered crinkled nylon fabric … and voila! A world of bright and colorful bags and accessories were born. Playfully dubbed Kipling, after the clever little spirit of the monkeys in Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, our story came to life and has been an inspiration around the world ever since.

While it is true we all have places to go and things to see — we prefer a skip, hop, or a cartwheel to get there. We keep tallies of smiles in our daily diaries and make wallpaper out of our favorite Polaroids. Additionally, we believe in seeing everything through a child’s gaze in a grown-up world. We pretty much make it our mission to find fun in anything. Simply put, you could say we have a lot in common with you! We live a joyful life and cherish little moments. But, most of all, we love making bags that lighten and brighten your day.

So, come along. We invite you to join us in our lifelong pursuit of spreading happy around the world – no matter where you go. From the schoolyard or campus to a casual stroll through the city or park, our promise is to inject a dash of fun, a wink and a burst of cheer into every moment along the way.

Try Saying Adventureland Without Smiling. Day 24 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Adventureland

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland

I dare you to say Adventureland to any person who grew up on Long Island and not get a huge smile and ten stories ranging from begging your parents to go on a weekend to a first date in middle school to an outing with camp/school/college friends during break. Adventureland was pretty much the coolest place on the entire island, well on Earth – in a kids opinion.

My Childhood Memories At Adventureland Amusement Park

I can vividly remember begging my mom to take me to Adventureland. Maybe once a season I would wear her down to comply. It would be the biggest deal. Sometimes you would even bump into your friends from school – with equally worn down looking parents – and you would have someone to ride the rides with you. Either way – once you walked through those gates you were in heaven.  I remember staring at the “big” rides with fear – the Pirate Ship, Gravitron, etc. Then, that first time I tried them I felt so grown up. I remember how the wind felt on my face as I went around and around on the Musik Express as 80s or 90s music blared. It was like a coming of age rite of passage for every suburban kid. But the swings were always my favorite.

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland 2014

Creating Childhood Memories For My Kids At Adventureland

Now, as a parent, living back in the same town where I grew up, I get to share Adventureland with my daughter. As a friend of mine mentioned to me today – it is still fun for us to go – but in a different way. Not so much to go on the rides – which luckily my daughter can ride herself, but the fact that any day you go it is like a mini reunion. Without fail there is always a friend of mine at Adventureland who I get to catch up with as our kids play. I tell you – we all seem to move back here and we all want to take our kids where we wanted to go as kids. I believe they call that nostalgia.

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland 2014

First Stop When We Moved To Long Island – A Season Pass

My daughter’s first experience at Adventureland was exactly a year ago. We had found our house and came out for the inspection. She was such a trooper I wanted to reward her. Buying that unlimited ride bracelet for her was exhilarating! I may have shed tears of joy. I was seven months pregnant so I could not join her on rides but I watched her smile get bigger and bigger as she went round and round.

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland

Once my daughter’s birthday rolled around I knew the best present anyone could get her was a season pass to Adventureland. To say we have gotten our money’s worth is an understatement. Considering we have been there two days this week alone – and were invited for today and tomorrow as well. It is close, fun, my daughter loves it and it costs me nothing to go. Win, Win, Win, Win! Why have a play date at your house?

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland 2014

Lots Of Benches For The Pre-Ride Set & Their Tired Parents

If you travel with a cuddly sidekick – like I roll these days – you will be happy to know there are multiple shady places to sit near each ride. I usually go with my daughter (even for an hour after school – season pass!) let her go on a ride and sit with my son in the shade. But we are talking enough shade that I don’t even have to put suntan lotion on him or me. It’s the small things I value these days…

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland

Admission to the park is free so I don’t have to pay to just sit there like other parks (yay!). You have the option of buying tickets for the rides – each ride taking 3+ tickets, the POP bracelet (Pay One Price – I don’t know if they still call it POP but I will forever call it POP) – which is unlimited riding for the day, or the season pass – which covers you from March through November. Adventureland also offers a large indoor arcade (skeeball!) as well as a large air conditioned area to eat and for birthday parties. They both sell food and allow you to eat your own food –which many other parks do not allow.

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland 2014

Multi-Generational Fun!

I love that Adventureland is a place that is not only fun for both me and my daughter but it also brings a smile to my face every time I go. We have our routine – rides from opening until lunch time (about an hour and a half), lunch break in the air conditioning, a grand finale ride, and a graceful exit.

The Mint Chip Mama - Adventureland

I like watching my daughter’s eyes widen looking at the Pirate Ship as we leave. She says “Whoa Mama, that ride looks scary. I’m never going on that.” But I know before I know it, I will be holding her hand as we ride it together for her first time.

Thank you Adventureland for being the coolest place in the world for kids (and moms). You have have always been and always will be one of my favorite things!

Tooth of Hearts. Two Hearts That Beat As One. I Need You. I Need You. Day 23 of My Favorite Things: Oral-B Electric Toothbrush

The Mint Chip Mama - Oral-B electric toothbrush

An electric toothbrush has been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

I have always been a big fan of brushing my teeth, I know that is weird but it’s the truth.

I still remember when I was little and the dentist told me I was old enough to start brushing in the morning and the evening.

It made me feel like such a grown up.

What’s A Better Gift Than A Free Toothbrush From The Dentist?

I remember getting a new toothbrush at the dentist and feeling like I won a prize every six months. And yes, I went every six months, to the day, every year. I am one of those weird people who actually like going to the dentist. But so do my parents, and now my daughter as well. So it must be genetic. Don’t get me started on my tooth fairy pillow.

My Favorite Childhood Toothbrushes

My first electric toothbrush had a Smurf base. OMG, I just got a thrill up my spine thinking about it. It was so cool. Then I remember when Oral B launched their manual toothbrushes with different color bristles that faded with use. It was like something from the future. Each visit to the drugstore I got a thrill like most normal kids got going to the candy store – which incidentally I never went to – which is probably why I never had cavities…

My toothbrush evolution. You totally want my Smurf toothbrush.

Enter The Electric Toothbrush

Those drugstore visits stopped at the holidays in 2002. My family dentist – after a perfect cleaning and tooth bill of health mind you … (dink! A sparkle on my tooth shines as I smile, point and wink) – said I should start using an electric toothbrush.

Whoa.

That was big time.

Little old me? But I wasn’t famous or a national celebrity.

Since I had come out to Long Island from Manhattan for my appointment, my requisite visit to Costco followed.

The Courting Began

She was sitting right there blinking her long eyelashes at me as we walked in to the store. There she was my companion for the next decade – my Braun 3D Excel electric toothbrush.

I was so excited – I begged my mom to get it for me for the holidays. This is a true story. It sounds so lame as I write it. Ha! But I really wanted it.

My new Braun 3D Excel toothbrush would travel with me around the world. She came with me to my wedding and on my honeymoon. She even joined me in the hospital – twice – when I had my children.

Sadly a few months ago she went to that swirling dental sink in the sky.

Once You Go Electric (Boogy Woogy Woogy) You Can’t Go Back

To say I was lost is an understatement. Use a basic toothbrush!? What? Now that I’z fancy? I went to the store to replace it but was so completely overwhelmed. Unlike in the olden days, there were a million choices. I asked the sales associate for help. She asked what my needs were. I answered – to brush my teeth. She looked at me blankly. That was not a sufficient answer. I left shaking and feeling inadequate.

I Turned To An Expert For Advice

So I did what many do when buying something important, I asked expert for advice. In this case the expert was Dr. Lauren Argentina of Modern Dentistry. She did not pause. She said she had the exact toothbrush for me – the Oral-B Pro 5000 SmartSeries with Bluetooth Electric Rechargeable Power Toothbrush.

It Was Time To Bring My New Electric Toothbrush Home

I took my new toothbrush home and welcomed her into my family. She was a bit jazzy for me but I was open to making a new friend.

She immediately wowed me with all of her functions – her 30 second timer, her red light indicator to show I was brushing too hard (I’ll admit I am a reformed too-hard brusher), multiple heads, and the best part – her interactive wireless display clock to help optimize brushing.

Plus she used the same brush heads as my Braun toothbrush!

Does One Really Need A Counter For A Electric Toothbrush?

At first I kind of laughed at this high-faluting SmartGuide “sidekick”. As I set it up I was wondering why I needed a counter to help me brush my teeth, but it was a clock too and I needed a clock so on the vanity it went.

When it was time to brush my teeth that night – I turned the brush on and on went the SmartGuide. “Hello, nice to see you” I said. “No need to count, I’m good staring at myself in the mirror” I continued.

But my eye kept wandering over. Ok. I was intrigued. It was SO cool. It was mesmerizing. I couldn’t help but watch it count as I brushed. Know what? It got me to brush for two minutes! Besides knowing exactly how long two minutes was – it had a little smiley face to encourage me to get there too. How could I have ever brushed my teeth without it? I was hooked. Well done Oral-B, well done.

I Love This Electric Toothbrush!

This toothbrush is amazing. My teeth feel cleaner and I can swear they are whiter. The interactive SmartGuide makes it fun and the clock is so helpful. This is a big girl toothbrush. This is the Rolls-Royce of toothbrushes. G-L-A-M.O-R-O-U-S. First class all the way. I highly suggest checking it out if you are in the market.

I like the floss brush head. Mainly for the pretty colors.

Thank you Oral-B for taking care of my teeth and for continuously creating innovative products. You have become one of my favorite things!

Oral-B Brand Heritage:

The Oral-B brand was founded in 1950 by Dr. Robert Hutson, a young periodontist from San Jose, California. Dr. Hutson noticed that his patients were neglecting their daily oral care because stiff, pointed toothbrush bristles were injuring tender gum tissue.

To respond to his patients’ needs, Dr. Hutson designed and patented a revolutionary new toothbrush featuring soft nylon bristles with smooth, end-rounded tips. The new brush effectively removed plaque and cleaned teeth thoroughly while massaging gum tissue.

Now, more than 50 years later, Oral-B is the world’s leading toothbrush brand and the toothbrush most recommended by dentists. Oral-B became part of the Gillette group in 1984. Braun, also part of the Gillette group at that time, started to use the Oral-B brand for electric toothbrushes. Oral-B has been part of the Procter & Gamble company since 2006.
