We Love Kids Classes!

Art is a very big part of my life and has been since I was little. I like to look at it, learn about it, teach my children about it, and make it whenever possible.

I took painting and drawing classes when I was younger and went to a fantabulous creative arts sleepaway camp for five years (where I taught glass blowing! Whaaat? My freshman year “you couldn’t guess that about me – fact).

Creativity Runs In My Family.

Art and music is in our genes.

It is not a surprise that my little girl loves them both too. I have been able to live vicariously through her these last few years by taking her to some of the best music and art classes I have found. Now I am enjoying Music Together once again through my son’s eyes.

Kids Classes On Long Island

Today’s post is about two of my favorite places to take kids classes on Long Island: Not Just Art in Oyster Bay & Soulshine in Port Washington. With the start of school looming this is the perfect time to think about signing up you(r kid) for an art class!

Not Just Art

For those looking for kids classes (for kids of all ages)– starting at infants – allow me to introduce you to Not Just Art. My son and I currently take Music Together at one of their satellite locations. Music Together holds a special place in my family’s heart. So when we moved out to Long Island I asked my good friends at Eastside Westside Music Together to recommend a class close to our new home. They sent me to Not Just Art. However, soon we learned Music Together was only a small part of the wonderful world of kids classes that Not Just Art created on Long Island.

We visited the bright, Oyster bay storefront of Not Just Art recently for a morning “mini-camp” and Music Together class. We got to see & take advantage of the bright, beautiful studios, retail space & spacious music room. My four year old excitedly did all kind of creative arts & crafts – including using common items in new ways (which I LOVE as I’m a recycling junkie).

We also got to tour the “older” kid art studios complete with wall to wall bins filled with recycled material ready for an imagination to run wild. I’ll admit to being a little jealous of all the great things there were to do for kids!

Great For Kids Classes And For Kids Gifts!

Before we knew it, it was time for music class. I was so excited to take my two kids to one class – a first for me! It was so amazing to watch them enjoy the class together. Since my daughter is an old-hat at Music Together she was singing to my son, getting him instruments and even “ba ba, ba ba ba”-ing for him. I’ll admit it, I shed a few proud Mama tears…

I highly, highly recommend checking out Not Just Art. Besides all the fantastic classes they offer there is a pretty large retail space with the most fantastic gift and art items. As Eva, the owner – told me today –Not Just Art is a creative children’s enrichment center specializing in art supplies as well as science and construction kits.

They are located at 183 South Street right in Oyster Bay and can be reached at: (516) 922-8300. They offer: Music Together® Classes (for newborns through 5 years), Art Classes, Science Classes, Parent/Child (Mommy & Me) and Separation Classes, Theater Arts, Preschool Enrichment, Prek & Elementary After School Programs, Birthday Parties, Play Dates & Custom Events, Drop-In Art Studio, Scout Troops Badges, Seasonal Workshops, School Vacation & Holiday Programs, Summer Mini camps, & Family Activities.

Soulshine

For those of you looking for art classes for kids and adults, allow me to introduce you to Soulshine. As soon as I entered Soulshine I felt like I hopped on a plane to the Caribbean. The beautiful bright colors transported me immediately. Fantastic!

My daughter made a beautiful painting on the perfect kid-sized canvas (!) And I was seduced by Dara’s “patented” circles to try as well. I must say, I did pretty well I think!

The Mint Chip Mama - Kids Classes Soul Shine

We had planned to spend an hour there to check out the studio but were having so much fun the time flew. As soon as we got home my daughter immediately insisted we hang both paintings in her room. I’m not sure if it was some type of magical paint that Dara has, and I don’t usually look at our art through rosy glasses, but both paintings were gorgeous! I felt like we brought a little bit of Soulshine home with us. And it made me happy.

All Kinds Of Classes And Workshops

Dara offers in-studio kids classes, art camp over school breaks, she is even happy to do custom classes around your schedule (by appointment). For the older artists, she offers mom’s night packages in her studio, can come to you & your friends, or can bring everything to a restaurant for the ultimate night out experience! For back to school she is offering Nursery/Pre-K classes, Children’s Mixed Media Art, story art/ draw & paint, Intuitive Painting (adults), Mosaics (adults), Creative Soul Circle, and a Friday Night Drop Off class.  Another exciting draw (pun intended) is Soulshine’s backyard garden where Dara will bring out easels on beautiful days to paint in the beauty of nature. So you can get your Monet-on.

I can’t recommend Dara & Soulshine enough. Check them out! Soulshine is located at 146 Main Street in Port Washington, NY 11050 or you can reach Dara at: (516) 944-3142 or info@dvoratroshane.com.

It is nice in this day and age to find good people running “mom and pop” shops. In you have a few moments, check them out. Feel good about supporting local, women owned businesses. I know I do.

Thank You For These Amazing Kids Classes!

Thank you Not Just Art & Soulshine for letting me relive my youth through creativity and introducing my children to art. You are both my favorite things!

Everything But The Kitchen Sink. Day 11 Of My Favorite Things: NKThreads Zippered Bag

A new zippered bag can bring much happiness! When I got pregnant with my daughter in 2009 I began learning about every baby product out there known to man (does this surprise you… have we met?).

Of course, I went to every event I could find in Manhattan about parenting, nursing, safety, CPR, gear, food, toys, anything. My goal was to know every item on the market and curate my child’s collection with precision.

The Mint Chip Mama - Baby Dressed As Dog

I was ok with the idea that a curated collection meant carrying a large quantity of items with me at all times (remember how I said I always try to be prepared?). It’s funny what that looks like when you live in an urban setting & walk everywhere.

Life As A Stroller Family

Your stroller is your car, or Sherpa – pOtato, potAto. My fantastic stroller had a big basket underneath. I also had the most fantastic compartmentalized Skip Hop Duo diaper bag that hung from my stroller for the better part of three years (mmmm pockets).

I could give you the coordinates of any item with me from my mental inventory at any moment. Think “Mary Poppins” on wheels. One day my friend from California came to visit. I think I spooked her by the breadth of my collection until she realized my stroller basket was just like her car trunk – at attention – and ready for anything.

The Mint Chip Mama - Girl Asleep in Stroller 2014

Our Shepra-mobile even worked as a co-sleep space!

Trips Out Of The City Were Filled With Lots Of Stuff

Speaking of cars – one of my favorite memories of coming out to Long Island with my (then) infant daughter was when my Dad met us at the curb and started laughing at how much stuff we had with us.

The phrase “everything but the kitchen sink” may have been tossed out…  He said he remembered vividly how 30 years ago they used to do that with me and the day they only packed one small bag was monumental.

I thought this was so funny – and so true as I reached that milestone with my own daughter a few years later. It was liberating once strolling led to walking, diapers led to the ladies room and “mom approved” snacks/food meant buying anything from anywhere.

Pretty much with a MetroCard and an Amex the world was our oyster.

The Mint Chip Mama - Guggenhrim

Life Changed As a Car Centered Family

Then kid #2 came along. My mentality was different this time around. I was a little less stressed (neurotic?) about having everything on me at all times. We moved to the suburbs and became a car-oriented family. I finally had an SUV‘s trunk to fill! Even so, I think I kept that liberation mentality of finally being “kitchen sink-less” and tried to roll on the lighter side this time around.

I Love This Zippered Bag!

But how does one adapt once their diaper bag is packed away and you really, really don’t want to get it out? The answer came by way of my friend RSF who sent me an NKThreads oil cloth zippered bag. Extra points to her for adding my son’s name. I’m a sucker for a good monogram.

The Mint Chip Mama - zippered bag 2014

This zippered bag – at first – just looked like a cute, waterproof pouch. But once I put everything I could possibly think I needed for the baby – there was still room!

It Is So Versatile

It could go in my everyday handbag and could also go under my stroller. She lives in the trunk juuuust in case – packed and ready (unless my husband changed a diaper on the go… then it is there, but empty – love you honey…).

Maybe it is the cute blue “camo” pattern that just made it blend in to every situation perfectly. It is just the perfect size – 10” x 13” zippered bag. It is thin, lightweight, compact, but fits a ton. It is just what I needed to keep my sink-less freedom while still being a good Girl Scout.

The Mint Chip Mama - zippered bag

Always With Me On The Go

So now in and out of the car all day every day I can grab the kid, the snap-n-go, my handbag & throw my awesome NKThreads zippered bag in the basket. Ah the liberation… But in case you need a food packet, towels, a car seat cover, a sun shield, a shopping cart cover, a high chair cover, an umbrella, granola bars, water, toys, reusable bags, crayons, stickers, a coloring book, a waterproof blanket, bubbles, or a sweatshirt – I have an extra in the trunk.

Thank you NKThreads for introducing me to a great zippered bag. You have become one of my favorite things!

SnackTaxi, SnackTaxi Riding In The Backseat..Day 10 Of My Favorite Things: SnackTAXI

On day two of “my favorite things” I asked: What do you consider your most “granola-y” trait. This is a funny question because what one may consider “granola-y” another may consider just a normal part of their day to day life.

I pride myself on living somewhere in between. But the bigger question is why is being conscious about the earth and caring about your “foot print” only something for hippies?

It is fantastic!

I was raised to believe in these things (granted by a hippy) and it is funny now how everyone else is catching up and it is chic.

My childhood is filled with memories of driving an hour to find a health food store so my mom could get whatever hippy crap she was looking for at the time.

Taking Care Of The Earth Is Now Fetch

Now, on every corner there is a health food store or a juice “emporium”.

I challenge you NOT to say organic, GMO, rbST, or gluten when talking about food.

Caring for the earth and being a good citizen of the earth is now main stream.

The Mint Chip Mama - SnackTAXI

How I Help Save The Earth On The Reg

So what are some of my “granola-y” traits? I mean “good citizen of the earth” traits?  Glad you asked. Just a few highlights….

The first thing I do every morning is open all of our blinds (for natural light). The windows – of course – are already open.

I prefer ceiling fans instead of the air conditioner (can you imagine my delight when we walked into the house we bought & there was a ceiling fan already in each bedroom – fate!).

Equally, I don’t turn on lights until sunset (we are blessed with tons of natural light).

I try to consolidate my errands by location so I am not driving back and forth all week long.

Additionally, I do a full load of laundry only once a week.

I run the dishwasher at night, when it is packed.

I’m a serial gift bag, wrapping paper and tissue paper re-user.

I’m an insane water conservator – keeping any extra water in some type of vessel until I can water my plants.

I put ice cubes that fall on the floor in house plants.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I re-use plastic shopping bags for garbage bags.

I keep enough grocery tote bags in my car in case I have to buy for a flash mob (I really want to be part of a flash mob. Are they still a thing?).

I twitch when I see food going to waste (I use to take leftovers and give them to homeless people on the streets of Manhattan).

So help my husband if he tries to get away with sneaking the recyclable bottles into the trash again. I’ve installed sonar, night-vision military grade surveillance cameras in our trash cans. Of which, we have one for garbage, one for plastics, one for paper, and one for bottles to go back to the store (one day I’m going to buy a Ferrari with all of those nickels).

I use “select-a-size” Bounty paper towels, sometimes even ripping one piece into thirds.

I have even figured out the minimum squares of Charmin toilet paper needed for a successful – you know (TMI?). Nope, not that – we have a bidet!

Speaking of paper towels and toilet paper (I should mention buying a brand name is a rarity as I usually buy generic), I always look for the largest amount in the smallest rolls. So I’m the one staring and counting on my fingers in Target to figure out if the seven extra jumbo big ginormous rolls that are equivalent to buying 950 single rolls really do come out cheaper.

I Do What Oprah Says

I have even gone so far as to buy re-usable stainless steel straws (this one I have to bow my hat to Oprah for the idea, so it’s ok).

The Mint Chip Mama - SnackTAXIThe Mint Chip Mama - SnackTAXI

Speaking of Oprah I remember her chatting (probably with Gayle) about something she does that Steadman mocks her about – re-using plastic sandwich bags. Now, this is something I do (I mean it’s like Oprah and I are the same person – right?). But I happen to have fantastic re-usable ones from SnackTAXI, so it’s ok. When these bags hit the market a few years ago I was curious about them. Then, I went to a Crest Pro-Health event (where I met Jennie Garth – yep!) and the SnackTAXI bag was part of their give away. I was so excited!

SnackTAXI

I started using these bags and pretty much haven’t stopped in the last two years. They are slim, light weight, cute, colorful, secure (they have a big, thick Velcro stripe to keep them tightly closed), handmade with natural products in Massachusetts, and good for the earth. They are so great even my husband uses them. I LOVE these bags.

SnackTAXI sacks are the perfect thing for back to school. Start the year off by committing to save the earth – just a little bit. Plus you get to choose from tons of cute patterns! One even says “Gluten Free!” on the label – a great idea so you can keep the sack separate and free of items that might cause a reaction. They have a full line of lunch time items, shopping items, and kitchen and table items. And… As I see now on the SnackTAXI website – their products were featured on Oprah. How’s that for full circle?

Thank you SnackTAXI for introducing me to a great re-usable, earth friendly product. You have become one of my favorite things!

It’s Up To You, New York, New York. Day 9 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Manhattan

Manhattan

I lived in Manhattan for thirteen years. During this time, I had the wonderful honor of having her provide for me exactly what I needed at each stage of my life. This included what many loved ones need at some point in the relationship – to be set free. Today’s post is not about a product, but it is about a place – a place close to my heart which I once called home – Manhattan.

The Mint Chip Mama - Belvedere Castle, Central Park,Manhattan

Manhattan Is One Special Place

I recently drove into the city for a camp reunion. This alone was wonderful (thanks again SL!) but it was just one of those days in Manhattan. You know what I’m talking about. One of those day that if you – at some point – lived there, you know what I mean. The weather was perfect, the sun was shining, the hustle was bustling, everyone had a dog or stroller, and the city reigned. It was one of those days I use to long for – a day where one spent their time sitting on the Great Lawn with friends, your paramour, your thoughts, or just alone enjoying the view.

It felt like heaven. I wanted to freeze that moment of perfection. It reminded me of the hundreds of days like this I has as a Manhattan resident. Days where I would sit in the park all day, then go home, get ready for dinner, find a restaurant outside, and just sit and people watch. It didn’t matter if it was uptown/downtown/all ‘round the town, you watched people while you sipped a glass of Riesling/Sangria/water/beer on the streets of New York. Those were my favorite Manhattan moments. Ones I would like to last forever.

Young And Single In Manhattan

After graduating from The University of Michigan I couldn’t wait to move in to my first apartment – on my own. When I was young and single I took advantage of all that Manhattan offered. This meant going to hot new restaurants, clubs, bars, lounges, shopping, museums, shows, you name it.

The Mint Chip Mama - a couple who just got engaged in central park in the fall in anhattan

Young And In Love in Manhattan

Then I fell in love (awwww) and my interests changed. We still did many of the above, but we also added in long walks holding hands, romantic sunsets, special pictures taken for a future wedding montage (I will admit, I tried to force my husband to take black and white pictures “Mad About You” style). As a result of our nesting , we moved “on up to the East Side” right before we got engaged. Our weekends were spent in “the park”. We had great commutes to work – I used to walk over to The Met and take the (fingers crossed Limited) bus down Fifth Ave to 56th street. Next, we got engaged, got married, got pregnant. Our love affair with Manhattan began to shift.

The Mint Chip Mama - A baby in front of the Great Lawn in Central Park in the snow inManhattan

My daughter’s first walk as a New York City resident.

Young And Now A Family In Manhattan

We welcomed our daughter during a huge blizzard in February of 2010. I thought having a kid in the city would be a nightmare but it was the most amazing thing in the world. Instead of only seeing pictures of Jackson Pollock art in Fancy Nancy books we could show our daughter the actual paintings. The entirety of culture was at our fingertips. In truth, we took advantage of every second.

The Mint Chip Mama - A little girl at the reservoir in anhattan

My daughter’s last walk as a New York city resident.

We welcomed our first son in October of 2013. With his arrival, we realized we had outgrown our 750 square foot apartment. Consequently, our knuckles holding on to Manhattan got more white. She had to let us go. so with that, we left in the midst of a terrible winter and we had had enough.

Sayonara Manhattan

Even though I have been back a few times in the last eight months, I haven’t “looked back” until yesterday, when that perfect summer day reminded me how much I loved Manhattan. The crazy thing is – going back – you realize the city doesn’t miss you. The city doesn’t know you. You were a rat in her race and life goes on without you. Turn, turn, turn.

I thought of this as I drove up Third Avenue – a street I walked up and down countless times and saw so many new things. All of these things I would have known about the second they opened, if I still lived there.

The Mint Chip Mama - A little girl in front of a Jackson Pollack painting at the MOMA inManhattan

My daughter in front of a Jackson Pollock painting at The MoMa.

No Looking Back

I think the key to leaving Manhattan is feeling one lived the full “New York life” every moment along the way. My approach was to do everything 110% so when it was time to go I had no regrets. When that time came, I was proud to say I left feeling fulfilled.

The Mint Chip Mama - High Tea at The Palm Court, Plaza Hotel, Manhattan

Strong City. Strong Partnerships

Even at her darkest time, we all banded together and showed the strength of our city. One of my favorite memories (from 2001) was a campaign NYC & Company had to get New Yorkers out of our holes and pump life back into the city. Even after a decade has passed, it reminds me of the strength the eight million New Yorkers have when operating as one. NYC & Company’s commitment to this was something that stayed in my heart for a long time. Because of this, it was my pleasure to watch their success over the years. Much like us, as we evolved, they evolved. We loved their different “Family Ambassadors” campaign – The Muppets, Where’s Waldo, and 2014’s Curious George.

I also really love their current social media campaign asking people to share their special moments in NY on Twitter with the hashtag #ThisIsNewYorkCity.

Today’s favorite thing – RSDubs Ribbons – is very near and dear to my heart. Actually, it is so near that it is something I created! My daughter and I designed haute couture hair accessories out of a need she had for wanting something specific. In addition starting this company taught her about design, research and development, and finally bringing an item to market.

The Origin Of RSDubs Ribbons

RSDubs Ribbons began in our home in April of 2014, after my daughter asked me for some pretty specific hair accessories that we could not find. “R” for her name, “S” for mine, “Dubs” for the first letter of our last name – W (Dubs is from a movie quote my husband and I joke about frequently). She and I worked together – building her confidence along the way – to come up with the current design. She was beyond proud to announce to her classmates and friends that she “had her own business”. Above all, she was excited to have a little pocket change of her own – that she “earned” – to buy the things she wanted without my approval. My little entrepreneur. She even insists on wearing an RSDubs Ribbons hair accessory when she goes to birthday parties so she can advertise. Genius!

Haute Couture Ribbon Success

We’ve had much such success selling at events and on Facebook. People love our designs and now identify the name RSDubs Ribbons with quality hair accessories. In fact, they have sold out everywhere we sold them! We have shipped orders across the country and have gotten quite the following! Also, we even started an album of our “Happy RSDubs Ribbons Fans!” from all the pictures we received. We are so proud our clients appreciate originality and fun, whimsical designs.

RSDubs Ribbons Design Process

A little into our design process – my daughter and I sit and review ribbon catalogs for our upcoming collections. Then we design the color scheme for the hair ties once the ribbon arrives. We make the hair accessory and to market it goes! It has been so much fun teaching my daughter about business and economics. She is proud of herself and I am proud of myself! It’s a win-win.

I’m Loppin’ On Sunshine, And Don’t It Feel Good (HEY!). Day 7 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Fiskars Lopper

I guess it was just a matter of time. One day I knew I would find him. I didn’t even know he existed for the first 36 years of my life. Then one day, there he was. Sitting on Amazon‘s Patio, Lawn & Garden page as the #1 most popular in the category gardening, hand tools – my tall, dark and handsome Fiskars Lopper.

Why Do I Need A Fiskars Lopper?

What’s a Fiskars Lopper you ask? YOU being the person – like me – whose backyard was formerly skyscrapers. Also YOU being the person who has their gardener do the “full shebang” on their property. YOU who don’t generally get excited about gardening tools… Well today’s the day. Know that satisfaction when you pop a really big pimple? If you answered “ew” then I was just kidding… I don’t either. Gross. But if you answered “yes!” Then bring.it.on. Get ready for some satisfaction.

The Mint Chip Mama - Fiskars Lopper

My new boyfriend.

Gardening Is In My Genes

Green thumbs run in my family (we have a group plan with a dermatologist). I spent countless hours at my grandparents’ house meandering around their huge backyard garden. When I was older I helped my mom tend to the vegetable plants we grew in buckets on our deck. However, it wasn’t until my senior year at The University of Michigan when I took the most fantastic class – Practical Botany.  Here my husband would say with an eye roll – “go ahead, brag that it was a FIVE credit class and you got an A”. So, once my family made the big move out to the suburbs, I was psyched to have a huge backyard that I could turn into my own oasis.

The Mint Chip Mama cutting branches next to a bbq

A Saturday night at our house looks different from a decade ago.

Now I Have A Backyard. What Do I Do With It?

What’s that you say Mr. Backyard? You are rootier than The Huxtables? (I crack myself up). So what’s a girl to do? I flagged down my neighbor’s tree cutter who recommended I get a lopper. “Sure, a lopper” (I played it so cool). I looked it up and apparently a lopper was all I needed to get rid of roots, branches, anything standing in my way to backyard bliss. I was sold.

The Mint Chip Mama - Stump

A big stumpy example (one of my most proud wins). Stump: 0, The Mint Chip Mama: 1

Enter Fiskars Lopper

I was so eager to start lopping. It was a breeze to use! Even prompting me to tweet the company saying my lopping reminded me of my daughter’s book Not All Princesses Dress in Pink. I was lopping through roots left and right with the ease of a nail clipper. So much so that I was able to clear a big strip in my backyard (bordering a water basin) to plant MY own vegetable garden. It became addicting. Every free moment I had (read: between bedtime and sunset when both of my children were asleep – so like 20 minutes once a month) you could find me out in the yard lopping to my heart’s content. It is very satisfying to not only reclaim my dirt from those roots, but also to cut down branches that were shading my plants and hanging over my fence.

I kind of want to wear my wedding tiara while I do it. As an added bonus it is a fantastic way to get out aggression and for the onetime $45.99 it is much less than the co-pay for a therapist.

Fiskars Brand Heritage

Established in 1649 as an ironworks in a small Finnish village, Fiskars has grown to be a leading global supplier of consumer products for the home, garden and outdoors. Available in more than 60 countries, Fiskars products solve everyday problems, making daily home, garden and outdoor projects easier and more enjoyable through superior performance and design.

In 1967, Fiskars revolutionized the way the world thought about scissors. Not only were our orange-handled scissors lighter, more comfortable and easier to handle than heavy forged scissors, they also delivered an amazing leap in cutting performance. This caused many home seamstresses to declare them off limits to the rest of the family — they were only for cutting fabric, only for projects that were truly special. Since then, our orange-handled scissors have become the standard of quality worldwide, selling over 1 billion.

Creativity continues to flourish in Fiskars Village today, where our company first began in 1649. With over 100 permanent resident artists and designers, the village is a hub of creativity, innovation and design. Blacksmiths, industrial designers, ceramicists, glass designers and more all call Fiskars Village their home. And with 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, it has now become the second-largest tourist attraction in Finland.

Label It, Just A Little Bit. Day 6 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Mabel’s Labels Name Labels

Mabel’s Labels Name Labels

No one likes labels – we all say. Unless, that is – it’s for your stuff so you don’t lose it! Then we all looove name labels. Especially for Back to School.

Name Label Time Was The Best Time

Name labels make me thing of getting ready for camp. I can still vividly see the white name labels with my name in a black block font. No, I mean I can LITERALLY still see them – hmmm I guess it’s time for some new clothes… But my terry cloth shorts are my favorite item of clothes ever!

These name labels meant several things. 1) I finally would have something printed with my name on it! (Since “Stacey” is spelled so many different ways finding items with the “E” was always a challenge). 2) Ironing board time which was oddly exciting . 3) It meant camp was coming! And who doesn’t love camp? I LOVED camp. To me, name labels and camp went hand in hand.

The Mint Chip Mama Long Island Mom Blog: Mabels Labels Terry cloth shorts

It’s Exciting to Label Something

There’s just something exciting about labeling things (my husband is laughing at me right now). I guess it’s like a dog marking its territory. Or why we all love to organize and then label what we organized. Try saying “The Container Store” without smiling. When my first child came along I had vision of her beautiful name being printed on labels so I could put them on all of her stuff. Spoiler alert: it was as exciting as I expected.

Enter Mabels Labels

I found out about Mabel’s Labels before my daughter really needing anything labeled, however – she needed name labels. Cute, girly, purple, princess name labels. So I ordered some. Then I let them sit in a drawer until I could figure out what to label. The name labels were such good quality I didn’t want to waste one on something temporary. I finally decided – her snack cup, that we began carrying with us everywhere  was the perfect candidate. Let me tell you – it was a defining moment in my “mom-ness” placing that first label on. Ah—good memories. I had such pride when people would compliment it (yes, people complimented the label because it was so cute!). The best part was – it was self adhesive! No unicorn ironing board needed (the advances in name labels since 1991 are quite astounding). I should mention we ran that sucker through the dishwasher countless times and the label still looked fresh and new.

Name Labels Evolved As Did The Kids!

Fast forward a few years and my daughter has been to camp and school. Her Mabel’s Labels pattern has evolved with her. Now that she’s big time and in is Pre-K time, we upgraded to a purple tiara label from the Ultimate Back to School Combo. This limited time (available only until September 30th) bestselling kids’ school label combo pack includes all the durable, waterproof name labels needed to keep belongings out of the lost and found. There are 4 limited edition solid palettes or 40+ multi-colored designs, plus special back-to-school motifs! I’m most excited to label her shoes with the round Shoe Labels.

If your child sways more towards the sophisticated side you will love Mabel’s Labels brand new Stylish Scholars Combo for back to school. It features a range of modern, refined, stylish designs perfect for scholars of all ages. Use these sophisticated name labels on school supplies, water bottles, electronics – like tablets, chargers or cell phone cases – and much more! I chose these for my son – in the blue “Camo” pattern. At nine months he leans much more towards Frank Lloyd Wright.

Any Name Label Will Be The Right Name Label!

You can’t go wrong with any Mabel’s Labels choice for all of your back to school, daycare, or even second session of camp needs. The best part is – they won’t go stale! They are dishwasher, microwave safe, washer and dryer safe. They are waterproof and UV resistant.

Thank you Mabel’s Labels for introducing me to a useful, reliable & fun product. You have become one of my favorite things!

Mabel’s Labels Brand Heritage

Mabel’s Labels started in 2003 by four frustrated moms (Julie Cole, Julie Ellis, Cynthia Esp, Tricia Mumby) because their children’s belongings left home and but did not come back. They decided to create the very best personalized, waterproof, name labels and tags possible. They’ve built on this commitment to excellence over the years and now feature child safety products, household labels and seasonal items as well.

It is not surprising these fantastic labels have won: the 2007 SavvyMom “Mom Entrepreneur of the Year”, “Best Product” from Baby Gizmo, iParenting and PTPA Media, and a 2009 Royal Bank of Canada Women Entrepreneur Award; and have been featured on The View, Today, The Early Show, Rachael Ray, LIVE! with Regis and Kelly, Parents, In Style, The Washington Post, Huffington Post, People.com, Forbes.com and countless blogs and websites. Mabel’s Labels is listed on Inc.com’s list of ‘20 Awesome Facebook Fan Pages’ and Hubspot’s ‘The 15 Best Facebook Pages You’ve Ever Seen’. Plus they have a big celebrity mom following!

Lice, Lice, Baby. Day 5 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Vamousse

Vamousse

Lice is something you hope you never have to deal with, but you want to be prepared in case it comes. This is why I have a Vamousse and have an arsenal of it – at the ready – in my closet.

What Girl Scouts Taught Me

When I was a Girl Scout Brownie, one of my biggest achievements was selling the most cookies and earning a “Saturn” necklace from the BACK of the catalog. This was the highest reward one could earn and twenty five years later I am still very proud. Huzzah! (Side note: I recently found it at my mom’s house behind my (still wrapped) Wedgwood India wedding china and immediately felt a rush of pride. I put it on and have told everyone who would listen (and those forced to – read: cashiers, dry cleaner, Girl Scouts on the street, etc) this story.) My point – yes I have one – besides now forcing YOU to hear my story – (ha, ha, made you listen) – is Girl Scouts taught me the motto “Be Prepared”.

The Mint Chip Mama: Saturn Girl Scout Necklace

Be Prepared

This is something I have lived by for as long as I can remember. It annoys the you-know-what out of my husband as I am generally prepared for a nuclear holocaust – you know, just in case. But I like to have everything I need at a fingers distance just in case. Hey – it’s a good motto!

Enter Vamousse

So with that said – I recently learned about Vamousse Head Lice Treatment products. Products I hope I never have to use. Now that my daughter is in school (and camp right now), I fear every day looking in her bag I will find one of those “dreaded lice letters”. Oh, someone in the school has lice – fantastic! Allow me to send my child in tomorrow in this lovely bubble I bought on Amazon Prime. Blech. Sorry if I made you itch. So what can you do about it?

Lice Defense Is The Best Offense

You can start using Vamousse Head Lice Defense Shampoo ASAP. Since you were prepared too, you already have it in your closet (go you). Because it uses non-toxic, natural ingredients (that means NO PESTICIDES!) to prevent infestation by killing lice before they lay eggs, it won’t hurt to use it just-in-case. You will make yourself feel better because you have an “action plan” and stop the unwanted pests in their tracks. If they are there. Which you don’t want to really think about. Blech. Isn’t that exciting! You don’t have to poison your kid to get rid of or prevent these pesky intruders.

20140806 lice-shampoo_bottle

When I heard that I had to get it. It’s there right now on my shelf quoting Benjamin Franklin — ‘An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure’. Plus, Vamousse Head Lice Defense Shampoo is designed to be used in place of your regular daily shampoo.

Ew, But What If I Get The Lice Letter

So you get the letter, you go to your closet, you pull it out & then you can use it that night. For me, that is the utmost being prepared. Go buy it now! Still itching? You can use it too. In fact, the whole family can use it since it is preventative and non-toxic.

But What If My Kid Is Lice Patient Zero?

Now, let’s go to that dreaded place – the letter came home because of your own little pigpen. If you have a bottle of Vamousse Head Lice Treatment Mousse in your closet you can simply go get it and start using it on your poor child currently locked in the closet. The lice treatment is proven to kill 100% of lice and eggs, in just 15 minutes, It kills lice AND eggs with 1 application (no other product kills lice AND eggs), it is a mousse product – with a canister nozzle – providing quick and accurate application that is less likely to drip in your child’s eyes, it is proven to kill 100% of resistant head lice (meaning you win!), it is non-toxic, pesticide free, and safe for children 2 years and older.

The Mint Chip Mama: Vamousse Lice Treatment

It’s My Favorite Thing I’ve Never Used

I know this series is about my “favorite things” so I hope you’ll be cool with me saying this is a favorite thing without ever having used it. If you aren’t, tough – I prefer to keep it that way! But in all honestly, I have thought of buying a preventative shampoo before but just can’t bring myself to buying something with pesticides for my little girl. That’s why I was really excited about this product. This is an absolute necessity for your Back to School shopping cart.

Thank you Vamousse for introducing me to a great, safe product. You have become one of my favorite things!

Nursing 9 To 5, What A Way To Make A Human. Day 4 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Glamourmom Nursing Tank Top

Glamourmom Nursing Tank Top

August is “Breastfeeding Awareness Month” and August 1st-7th, 2014 is slated as “World Breastfeeding Week”. Given my love for nursing I would be remiss not to include all of my favorite breastfeeding paraphernalia in my “Favorite Things” series. I have been lucky enough to have nursed for an extended time and to currently be nursing. So this is a topic near and dear to my heart (quite literally!).  Forget saying these are breastfeeding “accessories”. In my world – these are breastfeed necessities. The first of which is my beloved, beloved Glamourmom Nursing Bra Full Bust Long Top.

The Mint Chip Mama: Glamourmom Babies nursing tank top

Glamourmom Was One Of My Best Pregnancy Finds

I learned about Glamourmom Nursing Tank Top through Big City Moms back in 2009 when I was pregnant with my daughter. I went to their showroom and immediately wanted everything. I loved the nursing bras, tanks, sleepwear, the colors, the soft Pima cotton, and the delicate details – everything about the clothes. Of course being pregnant with my first child – nursing was only an abstract concept at the time. It was not until I had my daughter and began nursing that I fully appreciated the items.

Love At First Boob

From the moment I put on Glamourmom’s Nursing Bra Full Bust Long Top (In the hospital because I was given the great advice to bring a cute black tank to look nice in pictures. Instead of looking like a post-partum train-wreck.) it felt like my second skin. I went home from the hospital – both times – in  Glamourmom shirts. This also provided me a look that was super cute in the 4,000 pictures taken between the hospital and my apartment door. The Pima cotton was so soft on my poor body that had just been through so much. I also loved that it was two pieces – the cross-cut top and the detachable bra. But most of all – the soft cotton, oh the soft Pima cotton!

Big Boobs And Shelf Bras Never Worked For Me Before

I always had trouble finding shelf-bra tank tops that could accommodate my – um – large sized milk containers, shall we say? When I saw Glamourmom’s “Full Bust” option I jumped for joy. It fit live a glove! But it really fit like a glove – absolutely perfect. A fact that has led me to wear a Glamourmom Nursing Bra Full Bust Long Top pretty much every day since 2010… (shhhh).

Glamourmom Nursing Tank Tops Are Even Perfect Post Nursing Stage

I must admit the tanks stayed in my drawer post-breastfeeding because the are the perfect combination of support and length. There is beauty in the synergy of tank top strength and length. I struck gold. Perfect under a too short tank. Perfect when you forget to wash your other bras.

After A Thousand Washings They Are Still Going Strong

With that said, my Glamourmom Nursing Bra Full Bust Long Tops have been washed over and over and over again and honestly – they look as good as the day they came out of the bag. I run them through the machine with my regular weekly load and then hang them to dry.

Glamourmom Sizing

The Glamourmom Nursing Bra Full Bust Long Top fits from size 32D – 48I, comes in six different colors and is $59. The original Glamourmom Nursing Bra Tank fits from size 28AA – 44DDD, comes in five different colors and is $39 (with additional colors available in the Glamourmom Outlet). The Glamourmom Nursing Bra Long Sleeve with Detachable Nursing Bra fits 30A – 46G, comes in two colors and is $64. This shirt is great because it’s two things in one – the shirt and the detachable bra that you can wear under something else too. Plus it comes in purple (my favorite color).

Thank you Glamourmom for introducing me to a fantastic breastfeeding necessity. You have become one of my favorite things!

Brand Heritage

Here is a little more on Glamourmom because as you know – I LOVE learning about the heritage of brands:

Glamourmom is the revolutionary company who introduced the original Built-in Nursing Bra Tanks and Tops for today’s trend-setting moms. The idea for Glamourmom, a line of tops, slip dresses, bathing suits and sleepwear that feature a built-in nursing bra, arose after the birth of the founder Line Rothman’s first child some fourteen years ago. Frustrated by the lack of fashionable nursing bras, tops and nursing wear in the market, Line set out to create a collection of essential pieces for the new mom.

Glamourmom Nursing Bra Tanks and Nursing Bra Tops are available in a variety of options to accommodate all body types. The Nursing Bra Tanks and Bra Tops come in an array of trendy and tasteful colors, trims and fashionable lace accents. Glamourmom’s Designer Line also includes: Tankini Swimsuits, Long Sleeve options with Built-in or Detachable Nursing Bras, and a line of Sleepwear/Lounge wear in luxurious Pima cotton.

The Difference

The difference between Glamourmom’s products and its competitors are its technology, innovation behind the brand, and the many style options within the concept. The brand originated with the built-in nursing bra design and has evolved into a brand that supports an active lifestyle for both the new and expectant moms. Glamourmom products are more than just fashion, they offer women value through innovation, quality and style.

Glamourmom® products are available in over 650 specialty boutiques worldwide.

Am I In A Spa In Thailand Or My Shower? Day 3 Of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Vitabath

Vitabath

I was in the cosmetic industry for a long time. During that time I was lucky enough to get many bags of swag. With that said – I have tried most products on the market today – whether mass (drugstore) or prestige (department store brands). So it takes a lot to impress me with a new fragrance, beauty, bath or cosmetic product.

Vitabath Body Wash Entrance

In November I attended the Momtrends holiday event and was introduced to the brand Vitabath. I immediately fell in love with their new products. I especially loved the Vitabath Cupcake Couture™ Heavenly Coconut Creme™ Body Wash. At first I thought it was just another body wash in a gift bag, but then I started using it and I immediately saw this product was different. I quickly became a fan.

I Judge A Book By It’s Cover

Maybe it’s the packaging (and you know I’m a packaging junkie). The beige bottle and yellow vines remind me of a fantastic trip to Thailand. Maybe it’s the fun, curly font used– the same one that my eye is always drawn to when I’m ordering stationary. Maybe it’s the French words – reminding me of a more simple time in my life when I was in Paris. It could even be the name – Heavenly Coconut Crème, or delicious scent, or the smooth texture. Or, quite simply, it could just be that I’m excited to take a shower!

I Miss Going to Spas

Since having my  kids I haven’t gone to a spa. However, when I use my Vitabath Heavenly Coconut Crème Body Wash and close my eyes – I can feel the robe and the terry cloth slippers. I can hear the soothing music and trickling fountain. Even the smallest amount on my shower pouf provides a luxurious full body lather experience.

Vitabath Is Made With Great Ingredients

In addition to how the product makes me feel it is quite simply a good product to use. What you will find in the bottle is an Antioxidant rich super fruit blend of Acai, Goji, Coffee, Noni, Pomegranate, Green Tea & Mangosteen. Plus the skin conditioning nutrients Vitamin A, B3, C, E and Pro-Vitamin B5 enrich the formula. What you won’t find are any Sulfates, Parabens, Petro-Chemicals, Triclosan, propylene glycol, DEA, TEA, mineral oils or silicone.

You Don’t Have To Share

Another thing I like is it says it’s for adult use only. I like that because I know not to use it on my kids. I also like that because it means it’s just mine. Thank you Vitabath! You’ve become one of my favorite things!
