Of course no school year kickoff is complete without a new backpack and lunch bag. We loved checking out the new styles at Herschel Supply Co. for all three of my kids.

All the fun of Rubik reimagined into a compact problem-solving brain teaser puzzle game!
Bring On Rubik’s Gridlock!
Speaking as an only child, this one player game has got it all! With that said, experience a new twist (pun intended) on the classic Rubik’s Cube.
In fact, Rubik’s Cube Gridlock game is filled with all of the nostalgic flexible thinking challenges with only one solution possible. Sound familiar? Well grab one and try it out yourself soon!
The game comes in a self contained multi-compartment travel case with 88 game cards on one side and 11 blocks on the other. Moreover, my kids especially liked the illusionist vibe, hidden chamber, and moveable lock.
Game Play
Your mission is to place the white pieces where the card dictates and then fit all the other pieces around it completing the game. Because of this, it’s the perfect (read: small, compact, and a crowd pleaser for the entire family) addition to your summer vacation occupation station.

We recently headed to Dumbo for an adults only night out adventure where we climbed into hazmat suits and tried to save the world.
Ok… maybe not the world but we did TRY (and failed) to not get blasted with paint cannons – but we did – and laughed so hard from it we counted it as a win.
Beat The Bomb – An Escape Game With A Twist
Beat The Bomb – an escape game with a twist – has a few different high-stakes options (including family friendly ones) to choose from.
Then within each option you can customize it getting a super fun unique game each time!
We tried Beat The Bomb’s signature 1-hour ‘Mission Experience’ attraction and progressed through five hi-tech game rooms trying to Beat The Bomb.
Each interactive room had really fun engaging activities with touch screens, motion cameras, RFID readers, projection walls, and lasers.
We not only worked as a group of six but each person had a vital role to play as well.
The Grand Finale!
As your team advances through the rooms and levels you earn extra time towards the ‘Bomb Clock’ in the 5th and final ‘Bomb Room.’
Failing to disarm this final mission results in the world’s largest paint bomb exploding, and subsequently blasting neon glow paint right in your face (protective gear provided).
Quite simply… it’s amazing.
And you’ll want to lose too.
While this is all happening, Beat The Bomb films it for you and then immediately broadcasts it outside your room so you can watch, laugh, and relive your good time.
The package also included a post Bomb t-shirt and canned drink of your choice (beer, wine, or hard seltzer).
It was not only a really fun night out but also a great team builder and collaborative good time. I highly recommend it!

The Energizer Bunny and the new Energizer Color Alert coin lithium batteries were also really interesting. These bitter batteries taste bad and have blue Color Alert dye that activates when it comes in contact with saliva. This technology will hopefully help if kids accidentally swallow a coin battery.

I’m in my embracing perimenopause era. Do I have it? I don’t know. Do I check off all the boxes when I look it up? Yes. So am I self-diagnosing? Yep! Does that matter? Nope!
How do we know anyway when no one pays attention to us over here? Hello! Hello! Can you hear me? I’m a woman, I’m roaring… anyone? anyone?
Anyway, I digress…
I was super excited to enter the female forward Flow Space safe space and hear from the very vagina-positive Dr. Karen Tang and Alysia Reiner.
We howled together our wolf pack power from 42nd street about women’s health.
Women’s Health Care Is IMPORTANT. CAN YOU HEAR ME? Important.
Just think – if something happened to all the wives and mothers out there no one would be able to find the band-aids.
Not only was it great to bond with everyone at this bright, happy, fun event, but we left with Dr. Tang’s autographed book and some super duper swag from David’s Tea and Meno Well.
I can’t wait to attend more events at Flow Space sister to my favorite partner She Media.

The Golden Circle is one of the most popular destinations in Iceland. It has something for everyone with tons of offerings and several ways to slice it. While many make it a day trip from Reykjavík, opting to stay overnight gives you more time to explore. Additionally, you can join a tour or drive yourself around this well-labeled and beautiful area.
We chose to rent a car from Reykjavík’s bus terminal and head out on our own. Using Google Maps (and our international plan) we easily found everything. Sites were well marked, and signs were in English. Furthermore, if you’re coming from the US, driving is on the same side of the road. Since we visited in the winter, we opted for a 4×4 SUV to help with the icy roads and snow. This was an excellent choice.
We chose to sleep on the Golden Circle for two nights at Blue View Cabins. This luxury cabin both fit our family of five and offered us the perfect location to catch the Northern Lights. However, as mentioned in my previous posts, the fickle Icelandic weather had other ideas.
As I said in my South and West Iceland post, there is some overlap with the Golden Circle. So be sure to read both posts when making your itinerary. The activities below spanned three days and two nights on the Golden Circle.
Located in Thingvellir National Park, Þórufoss or Thorufoss was our first Golden Circle waterfall stop. As mentioned before, when chasing Icelandic waterfalls, make sure to include “parking lot” so it brings you to the correct location (trust me). Thorufoss herself is located a short hike down a path past the parking lot. However, you can also walk straight across the flat parking lot and catch a glimpse. I opted for the easy way and behold, Þórufoss.
Öxarárfoss and Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park
Still in Thingvellir National Park, we continued our theme of WITW (where is the waterfall?) at Öxarárfoss’ parking lot. We followed the herd of people to another icy trail (no thank you) and then learned a different parking lot offered a five-minute walk to the fall. See – put “parking lot” into your map (learn from this cautionary tale!). While we missed the great waterfall view, we enjoyed Almannagjá Gorge and its famous tectonic plates. In the summer this is a vastly different experience and one that is absolutely stunning!
The rye bread mixture is put into a metal pot, sealed in plastic wrap, and buried under a pyramid of dirt at the boiling water line. Twenty-four hours later it’s exhumed perfectly spongy and beyond delicious. It’s then brought inside, sliced (still steaming), and served with locally made butter and locally caught arctic char. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen and so delicious I don’t have words to describe it. This was another trip highlight for us.
Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Baths And Steams
Following our rye bread experience, we changed into our bathing suits and ventured into Laugarvatn Fontana’s geothermal heated pools. With several to choose from – each at a different temperature – we didn’t want to leave. Add in the gorgeous view of the mountains surrounding the lake, plus the heat of the water juxtaposed with the chill in the air, and it was just perfection. We absolutely adored Laugarvatn Fontana. Give yourself a few hours here to enjoy all their offerings, including their café with fresh, local products.
Geysir Hot Springs
Geysir is where the first geyser… geysered. It’s the granddaddy of all sprays, home to the first. Not to mention, it was freaking cool! While the OG Geysir is now old and tired (like me), its neighbor – Strokkur – has taken center stage. Here you’ll find steam shooting up to 130 feet (or 40 meters) in the air about every eight minutes.
But first, let me take a step back. As you approach the site (right across from the parking lot), you’ll pass mini geysers and puddles of boiling water. Looking around you’ll see mountains and water at a roaring boil, offering a total Strega Nona vibe. It was insane. Not to mention as you continue along, steam emanates from the Earth in every direction.
The path takes you past the namesake and all the small ones too. But then you hear a pop, Strokkur erupts, and your jaw drops. I can guarantee that by the time you do a full lap, you’ll experience Strokkur‘s eruption several times. It was mesmerizing. In fact, when we passed Geysir returning from Gulfoss the next day I wanted to stop and see it again.
Brúarfoss
Yet another waterfall where adding “parking lot” into Google Maps would have helped, we eventually got to Brúarfoss. Just a short walk from the car, this waterfall was very pretty but down a scary-looking icy hill leading to a bridge, so we got spooked and retreated. Plus, by the time we got there, it was getting dark and starting to snow. Enter what became the beginning of our first Icelandic storm.
Efstidalur II Ice Creamery And Farm
As the snow started falling we headed to our hotel with a stop at the famous Efstidalur II for dinner. Here we had the most lovely meal and delicious homemade ice cream. We loved reading about the history of this 400-year-old family-owned farm and enjoyed its endless soup bar. My kids loved watching the cows graze inside the barn as we dined above them.
Blue View Cabins
It’s safe to say that all five of us were looking forward to our private cabin at Blue View Cabins. Not to mention our private geothermal heated hot tub!
The location was amazing and the cabin was spacious enough for us to stretch out. We had a full kitchen, two bedrooms, a pull-out sofa, a huge bathroom, and a 360-degree view of the area.
This would have been the most incredible place to see the Northern Lights… if it wasn’t for the storm. Blue View thought of everything including a door from the bathroom to the hot tub to keep the cabin dry. This was our favorite hotel of the trip and not just because they put chocolates on our pillows.
Icelandic Weather
Our first Golden Circle day was filled with absolutely gorgeous weather. However, we woke up to quite the opposite on day two. Before us was a famous Icelandic storm.
Friðheimartomato farm is one of the most popular and beloved places in Iceland. Rising from the land of the Golden Circle you’ll find the huge greenhouses of Friðheimar and her cool older sister Vinstofa Fridheima. This realized family-run dream started in the 90s (like everything cool) and combined growing tomatoes and raising horses. We were lucky to meet Dóróthea who taught us about the history and current status of their incredible tomato empire.
She shared a few cool things. The first was their tomatoes are sold all over Iceland (with a family picture inside the clamshell “because it’s nice to see a friendly face”). Next, with frequent trucks picking them up you can eat a tomato in Reykjavík the same day its harvested. Lastly, she returned to create Vinstofa Fridheima (Friðheimar’s Wine Bar) – a grape leaf-decorated bistro and event space availing the restaurant’s famous tomato soup, tomato beer, and local treats to visitors throughout the afternoon and evening.
The story was fantastic, the food was fantastic, the colors and tomatoes were fantastic, and Friðheimar was absolute perfection. Be sure to make a reservation as they fill up all year long.
Secret Lagoon – Gamla Laugin
After our very delicious lunch, we headed to the Secret Lagoon in the pouring rain. The wonderful manager of the Friðheimar Wine Bar assured me this was the Icelandic thing to do. When the weather is bad, they head to the water. As the rain dripped and dropped around us we stayed warm in this outdoor lagoon – the oldest pool in Iceland. I loved the feeling of the ocean sand/little rock mixture under my feet at the bottom of the pool.
Gullfoss Waterfall
For seventeen years I’ve wanted to visit Iceland because of my friend’s picture of Gullfosswaterfall. Without a doubt finally seeing it was surreal. However, it was raining and snowing and looked different in the winter. But again, I’m told so is Iceland. The tremendous size, beauty, and power of Gullfoss could not be curtailed by the weather. Thankfully we had our Frogg Toggsrain pants on to save the day.
Gullfoss Visitor Center’s Famous Lamb Soup And Hot Chocolate
As we ladled it out, we saw chunks of lamb, potatoes, and onions, plus more heavenly goodness tasting better than it looked.
It was a very happy silver lining to a day filled with many weather-related twists and turns. In fact, what else does one need after a difficult day than a steaming bowl of hearty soup? How about the most incredible hot chocolate on Earth? I’m not sure how they made it so good, but thankfully our day ended with warm happy bellies.
The Beginning Of The End
Our final day in Iceland combined the last Golden Circle stops, returning the car to Reykjavík, and catching Flybus to the airport. The weather was crazy all morning going from sun to rain to snow (repeat). We experienced the joy (fear?) of driving through all of it ending our Icelandic adventure as authentically as possible!
Faxafoss – Faxi Waterfall
Faxi waterfall was the perfect stop on our way back to Reykjavík. It’s visible from the parking lot or you can walk down the easy trail for a closer look. A bit off the beaten path and known as Gulfoss’ kid sister, Faxi was both beautiful and worth a stop.
Kerið – Kerid Crater
With the snow streaming down and our flight a few hours away, Kerid Crater was the last scenic stop on our Icelandic family vacation. Located right off the road on they way back to Reykjavík, I jumped out of the car, paid my small admission fee, and ran up the hill to take a look. While I didn’t have time to walk around the volcanic crater, it was super cool to see. A tour guide told us that years ago Iceland’s most famous export – Björk – did a concert there while floating on a raft in the middle of the lake. I’m glad we stopped. It was both worth the ten minutes (even in the snow) and a fantastic way to end our trip.
Bye Golden Circle, Bye Iceland
Iceland was an incredibly unique country filled with stunning nature, delicious food, and friendly people. I loved visiting in the winter but instead of feeling satisfied to finally complete this decades-long bucket list trip, it just made me want to return in the summer and see it differently. It was sad to say goodbye, but we enjoyed one last Skyr, refilled our waters, and headed back to the States.

Iceland is filled with the most beautiful coastline I’ve ever seen. I’ve never stopped to think about it, but Ring Road – the most popular and visited road in Iceland – stretches along the Atlantic Ocean. This means as you drive and see volcanoes and waterfalls on one side, you see beautiful crashing waves on the other.
South & West Iceland are easily accessible by driving yourself or joining an overnight tour. Many people opt to stay in Reykjavík and take day tours while others (like us) choose to sleep in different regions to be closer to the sights.
As mentioned in my previous post, Icelandic weather can change on a dime. Because of this (and our fear of storms), we decided to join an organized tour and play it safe. Plus, it was a nice break from having to think at all! We simply sat back, relaxed, and enjoyed the pretty scenery.
Iceland’s south and west areas are not heavily populated but are quite beautiful. Additionally, while heading south, if you’re into chess, be sure to stop in Selfoss and see the Bobby Fischer Center.
Golden Circle Or South Iceland?
While taking Ring Road heading South and West you’ll pass several sites that check off both boxes. We absolutely loved The Lava Tunnel (one of our trip highlights) and Kerid Crater. However, both were part of our Golden Circle leg.
Driving Around South & West Iceland
If you’re self-driving I suggest putting everything into Google Maps before departure and playing around with it there. This will allow each day’s itinerary to emerge organically. Next, email it to yourself so you’re ready to go upon arrival.
One important thing to note – as mentioned in my “Know Before You Go” tips, be sure to include “parking lot” for each waterfall or you may accidentally end up in the wrong place. Lastly, while Wi-Fi is plentiful, you’ll need an internet connection (from your carrier) for Google Maps when driving between stops.
Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls… Unless You’re In South & West Iceland!
Iceland has many beautiful waterfalls each with its own vibe. If you’re visiting in the winter remember it can (and will) get icy so be careful walking around and stay on the designated paths.
The exact spot I fell (on a sheet of ice) because my crampons were on the bus and not on my feet. Seljalandsfoss: 1, The Mint Chip Mama: 0.
Is Special Footwear Needed?
While special footwear like crampons are not “needed” at the waterfalls they will definitely help with the ice. It makes sense to bring them, not use them, and return them when you get home vs wishing you had them. Check out our packing list for some easy to pack selections. With that said, some waterfalls have a crampons vs. no crampons path so keep your eyes peeled for that too (see, they make it so easy for tourists!).
Waterfalls Are… Wet!
It’s not surprising that waterfalls are wet. However, it is surprising that the spray is so powerful you can get drenched just looking at them! Depending on your sprinkle tolerance (and the weather), you may want to gear up and wear a raincoat or rain pants. We loved Frogg Toggs’ lightweight options which were both easy to pack and heavy on the zippered pockets (my kryptonite). We also wore waterproof boots the whole time.
Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
Seljalandsfoss is one of the first waterfalls you’ll see driving south on Ring Road. With that said it’s an impressive one! This waterfall is part of the Seljalandsá River, which begins under the famous Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. The exciting part about Seljalandsfoss is walking behind it, but womp womp, this option closes when it’s icy and sadly it was icy when we visited. Thus began my lesson on being powerless against Icelandic weather and having to go with the flow.
But Wait! There’s More!
While there, be sure to follow the path past Seljalandsfoss and check out the additional waterfalls (including Gljúfrafoss), little caves, and beautiful rock formations. Your kids will like the caves more than the waterfalls.
Eyjafjallajökull Volcano
The base of Eyjafjallajökull Volcano aka the volcano that shut down Europe in 2010 is the perfect place to stop for a quick picture. Known as E-15 by everyone who can’t say Eyjafjallajökull, it now looms over the street quietly sleeping. Fun fact – you have to stand back to fit all the letters in your picture!
Skógafoss Waterfall
The stunning Skógafoss is famous for its hundreds of steps to conquer for an aerial view. Want to know my opinion? It was nicer (on my thighs and eyes) from the ground. Here I’ll save you the 527 steps…
As you approach the gorgeous waterfall it will draw you in making you want to get as close as you can. This desire is even stronger when there’s a full rainbow arc crowning the waterfall! At this moment I guarantee you’ll be happy wearing waterproof pants. Be sure to look for the pretty house nestled next to the waterfall too.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach
Reynisfjara Beach is super cool because of the black sand, basalt columns, cave, and crazy CRAZY CRAZY! crashing waves. We were completely mesmerized watching the water and had so much fun hopping between rocks, feeling the smooth stones, and playing the floor is (literally) lava. With that said, be mindful of condition warnings and believe them! People often miscalculate the undertow and get violently sucked into the water. Much like Bodhi at the end of Point Break – there’s no coming back.
Vik Church
Vik’s small, beautiful, red and white hilltop church is one of the most photographed sites in Iceland. It’s a quick stop and worth it. It’s not only pretty but offers a beautiful view of the area including the other side of Reynisfjara Beach.
Icelandic Horses
As you drive down the coast you’ll see farms with the famous Icelandic horses along the way. Many people (respectfully) stop to say hello and take pictures. I loved looking at the variety of horse colors in each grouping and seeing how calm they were when tourists bothered them (me). Be sure to look around if you stop, you’ll often see a small little waterfall popping out nearby as well.
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lake – or lagoon – created by the water running off the Breiðamerkurjökull glacial tongue from the Vatnajökull Glacier. With its huge ice chunks, icebergs, and wildlife it’s an incredible place to stop and sightsee.
There are a few vantage points to enjoy, each with a different view. You can either head down to the lagoon shore or climb up a small hill for an aerial view. Both were spectacular. From above I saw a seal sunning himself on an ice sheet (ignoring the tourist paparazzi). From below I saw seals playfully swimming and the current moving ice chunks all over the place. I loved it here and could have stayed staring at the lagoon for hours. Now that I’m home I’m addicted to the lagoon’s live camera.
Monster Truck Ride To The Base of Vatnajökull Glacier
From Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, we boarded a monster truck and drove thirty minutes to the Vatnajökullglacier’s edge. Part of this ride was paved and part was “fun” off-roading through bumpy dirt and puddles (my kids loved it!).
Vatnajökull Glacier’s Natural Ice Cave
Holy moly was this cool. After a twenty minute walk to the glacier base we arrived at the ice cave’s entrance. We donned our provided micro spikes and helmets and toured with mouths agape. Before us was an incredible, stunning, naturally formed(!) ice cave.
The height varied throughout the cave from high (tall people could stand) to low (kids had to crawl). Our guide shared that the ice cave melts and reforms each year so this ice cave will be different next winter.
Fun fact – you can capture the gorgeous blue color in your picture by shining the light from one phone onto the ice while taking the picture with another.
Vatnajökull Glacier Hike
As we exited the ice cave, our guide gave us a thrill and walked us down the glacier. This was equal parts scary and cool (pun intended).
While I was sad before the trip that my son’s young age prevented us from a proper glacier hike, I can confidently say that this small taste was more than enough for me! Furthermore, from up here we could see down into the ice cave we just exited stunned at how deep we were in the belly of the glacier.
Glacier Water From The Source!
As we returned to the truck, our guide stopped us and encouraged us to bend down and drink directly from the glacier runoff. It was the coldest, clearest, most delicious water we ever tasted and my kids LOVED this super cool out-of-the-box opportunity.
Diamond Beach
Across the street from Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, you’ll find Diamond Beach. If you’re like my little son, you may also be sad to find out the “diamonds” on the beach are in fact ice, not gems (sorry).
Furthermore, the ice is broken off chunks from the glacier – carried through the lagoon by the current – ending up on the black sand shore. Because it’s so cold these giant marooned “diamonds” don’t melt, they just glisten in the sun.
While there I implore you to take a cheesy picture proposing with an iceberg. Also – stop, look, and soak in this incredible occurrence for a moment. It was cool watching big chunks of ice emerge from the crashing waves and get pushed onto the sand.
Skeiðará Bridge Monument
The Skeiðará Bridge was once the longest-spanning bridge in Iceland. When a volcano erupted in 1996, it melted part of Skeiðarárjökull (an outlet glacier from Vatnajökull) causing a massive flood. Within this flood were huge icebergs. The ice chunks were so enormous and the current was so strong that it knocked down the bridge. All that remains is this twisted graffiti tagged metal reminding us – once again – of nature’s power.
Food Breaks
There are minimal restaurants along the road so be sure to stock up on snacks and Skyr (Icelandic yogurt) when you can. You’ll find a few supermarkets and gas stations along the way and a proper rest stop in Vik.
Stop And Smell The Glaciers
Iceland’s scenery is downright gorgeous, especially on the coast. Be sure to look out the window (not at your phone) as you tour. Go slow, pull over, take it all in, and snap lots of pictures. Enjoy the mountains and glaciers from different angles and soak in the size and beauty from every vantage point.

New York City is the setting for the show F• R • I • E • N • D • S which stole our hearts in 1994.
Friends The Experience – Now A Permanent NY Exhibit!
To celebrate the show’s 30th (eek!!!) anniversary Friends The Experience is now a permanent Manhattan fixture!
Located on the corner of Lexington and 23rd (ironically where I lived in my early 20s) you’ll find so much nostalgic good stuff you won’t want to leave.
Here, you’ll find fun quotes and famous props from Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Joey & Chandler. Additionally, it’s chocked full (pun intended) of behind the scenes goodness.
Behind The Scenes
I loved hearing how Debra McGuire (the costume designer) came up with the color palates and token patterns for each character.
To this day if I see a color block vertical “Chandler” shirt I immediately think of him!
It’s crazy to think how their costumes were influenced by their character’s personalities. Furthermore, how it was all methodically planned out! Awesome job!
Photo Ops Galore!
Of course if you’re looking to be the 7th Friend (7, 7, 7!!!) you’re in luck with the plethora of photo ops offered.
You’ll find the famous couch and fountain from the opening credits. Plus the “pivot” couch in the stairwell. You can stick your head in Joey’s body wearing ALLLL of Chandler’s clothes. Of course you can also see Monica and Rachel’s apartment and Joey and Chandler’s apartment.
Say hello to the holiday armadillo and grab a cup of coffee at Central Perk! But also, OH MY GAWD Monica wearing the Thanksgiving Turkey on her head.
Not to mention everything else you’d want in an immersive Friends experience. They thought of everything.
Finish up the tour at Central Perk – a fully functioning and publicly accessible 90s coffee house.
Central Perk Is Open To The Public!
With their extensive menu of DELICIOUS coffee and tea options you can grab a nostalgic photo op of your own with an oversized mug any day of the week!
If you’re a Friends fan or have a friend who is, this is a great thing to do and guaranteed to bring enjoyment to anyone not ON A BREAK.
Be sure to do your homework and rewatch your favorite episodes.
If you’re outside New York check when the traveling pop up is coming to you!

Sara Gruen’s 2006 critically acclaimed bestselling novel Water for Elephants was one of my all time favorite books.
When I heard it was coming to Broadway I couldn’t wait to see it!
I remembered the incredible story and couldn’t wait to see it unfold on the stage.
I was simply blown away.
Run Don’t Walk To See Water For Elephants On Broadway!
Water For Elephants was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. Every part of it from curtain up to curtain down was perfection.
Besides a rich and interesting plot line on the Broadway side, the circus performers were as good as you’d see in any circus performance out there.
Actually, many of them are classically trained in circus arts as well as theater arts!
Not only was the show amazing but the audience collaboratively “oooh-ed” and “ahh-ed” as the incredible performers stole our gasps with their gravity defying stunts.
This show was not only a love story but a dazzling bowl of eye candy from every angle.
Front Mezzanine For The Win!
Speaking of angles, we loved sitting in the front mezzanine which provided us the perfect birds eye view of everything going on. And let me tell you – there was a LOT going on!
Whether you read the book or saw the movie (or neither of the above) you must flip, twist, and jump on over as fast as you can.
I am still beaming from this show. I want to see it again!

After seventeen years of staring at my friend’s gorgeous Gullfoss waterfall picture, my dream of visiting Iceland finally came true! We packed our warmest clothes and headed over.
Iceland is a beautiful country just five hours away from New York and filled with a landscape like no other.
This beautiful country is where fire and ice meet. With that said, after driving through extensive lava fields and then crawling through huge, gorgeous sky-blue ice caves, I can see why.
Both an easy and super family-friendly country, Iceland is a great adult or family destination. Additionally, the winter and summer months provide two different experiences. Planning your trip is straightforward and given the variety of restaurants and accommodations – plus natural beauty galore – there is something there for everyone.
Know Before You Go And Packing For Iceland
A trip like this needs some weather-related planning, so definitely check out these “Know Before You Go” and packing tips in advance. Several airlines fly into KEF, Iceand’s international airport, so finding a flight that works for you should be easy. We also opted to take Legends Limousine Worldwide roundtrip to JFK getting us there stress-free.
Arriving In Iceland
Iceland is set up to make it extremely easy for tourists to get around. Upon arrival at the easily manageable KEF airport, we walked right over to FlyBus for our airport transfer. Since the Blue Lagoon is close to the airport, it’s suggested that you visit upon your arrival or departure. FlyBus not only offers transfers all over Iceland but also a two-part leg from KEF to Blue Lagoon, then Blue Lagoon to Reykjavik.
In Reykjavik, The Air Is Cold But The Streets Are Warm!
One of the super cool facts we learned about Reykjavik was the streets are heated from below using geothermal heat. This means as the snow falls, it melts away. Because of this, most central paths are clear and the city is easy to explore without any special footwear.
What Should I Wear In Reykjavik?
There was a lot of debate on what to wear in the city. Due to the cold, we started with a base layer, but from there we just wore normal winter city gear. My husband wore jeans, I wore fleece-lined pants, and my kids wore their same New York sweatpants. However, the biggest difference was we wore super warm amazing socks and waterproof boots.
Family-Friendly Reykjavik
The beautiful city of Reykjavik could not have been more family-friendly and enjoyable. It’s easily walkable and filled with many beautiful sights. Our hotel was centrally located and right by the Sun Voyager sculpture. Additionally, the city has a magical feel because of its colorful buildings and continuous tongue-in-cheek vibe. There are endless things to do, and two to three days gives you plenty of time to explore.
Take (Or Make) A Walking Tour
We enjoyed the pay-as-you-wish GuruWalk Walking Tour where we visited many famous Reykjavik sites. We also learned about the history of the city and the Icelandic people’s love of trees (including visiting the 2016 Tree of the Year and the “Oldest Tree in Iceland”). Furthermore, there are many fun statues on or near the waterfront including a piece of the Berlin Wall.
The Icelandic Phallological Museum
Speaking of Reykjavik’s tongue-in-cheek vibe, one of its most popular museums – and I believe the only museum in the world dedicated to this specific… member… is the Icelandic Phallological Museum. Beside hundreds of real-life specimens you’ll find a variety of on-theme items including waffles, door handles, candles, and anything else you can imagine. It’s quite the experience, especially when you find one taller than you!
FlyOver Iceland
Recommended by everyone, FlyOver Iceland was a hit with our family as well. During this completely immersive experience, you’re strapped into a ride making you feel like you’re… flying over Iceland! It whizzes you past more than twenty-five of Iceland’s iconic waterfalls, volcanoes, and more in this 4-D theater. It was a great experience and one loved equally by kids and adults. Additionally, there’s a great café to grab a pre-show snack.
The Lava Show
With science-obsessed kids (and adults), The Lava Show was another favorite of ours. This is the only place in the world where you can see lava up close, and it was so cool! Upon entry you’re immediately transported into the warm world and colors of a volcano from the basal column photo wall to the themed drinks and lighting. We picked The Lava Show’s premium package which included a behind-the-scenes look at the show, a drink, and a souvenir piece of lava. My kids loved seeing the furnace that melts the lava pieces before entering the theater for the show. They also loved touching actual lava from the 1818 Katla volcanic eruption and then bringing it home.
Whale Watching Tour
I absolutely LOVED Elding’s Classic Whale Watching Tour in Faxaflói Bay – on Reykjavik’s shore. This three-hour boat ride offered both indoor and outdoor options to watch whales living right outside of the city. We were lucky to see FIVE whales on our tour! While the hunt for them was super fun, the scenic views of the mountains and water were equally enjoyable. I loved every second of this family-run tour including their philosophy emphasizing research, education, and sustainability ensuring only the best for their beloved animals and bay. Additionally, I was so impressed that at its conclusion they offered us professional pictures, videos, and a report of our animal encounters.
Hallgrímskirkja Church
Up Skólavörðustígur –better known as Rainbow Street – you’ll find Hallgrímskirkja Church. Hallgrímskirkja is the largest church in Iceland and famous for its beautiful exterior as well as its expansive clock tower views. I highly recommend taking the time to ride the elevator up for this incredible aerial storybook view of Reykjavik.
Endless Snack Options In Family-Friendly Reykjavik
There’s no doubt that sampling a new cuisine is one of the most exciting parts of traveling. With kids, you’re always talking about food (and most likely keep snacks with you so your kids (and husband) are happy at all times). With that said, I love visiting supermarkets in foreign countries and stocking up on local foods. We picked up their famous baked goods, licorice-flavored candies, chocolate-covered rice cakes, and delicious volcanic salt (all make perfect inexpensive souvenirs as well!).
Try The Skyr!
In Iceland, they’re known for many types of delicacies including their high protein yogurt called Skyr. We found a buffet of flavors everywhere we went (while laughing at the wide price variations of each location). These were easy to eat on the go, on a bus, on a walk, or waiting for our next tour.
Causal Dining
There are more restaurants in Reykjavik than you can count ranging from simple to fancy. There are also several Food Halls with everything from sushi to traditional Icelandic food. On our first night, we ate at Hlemmur Matholl which pleased everyone since no one had to agree on anything. We each ordered what we wanted and then came together to a common table to eat. Icelandic Food Halls are quite popular and even include Michelin-star restaurants! It’s worth the experience for either lunch or dinner.
Icelandic Dinners Your Family Will Love
On our second night, we treated ourselves to the Wake Up Reykjavik Food & Walking Tour. This super fun tour brought us to four different traditional Icelandic restaurants (plus a dessert stop) to sample a combination of local Icelandic dishes. On this tour, we tried the famous fermented shark and a shot of Brennivín as well as the famous Baejarins Beztu Pylsur hot dogs. I can’t recommend this tour enough, it was great!
Public Art
Reykjavik has loads of sculptures throughout the city. One of the prettiest walks is along the water on the Sculpture and Shore Walk. We loved this during the day but also at night while searching for the Northern Lights. With the mountains in the background and the lights of the city, it was absolutely beautiful. There are also murals everywhere – on buildings, covering buildings, and even on the streets. I loved finding the sculptures and couldn’t wait to see the Unknown Bureaucrat down by the lake outside of city hall.
Shopping
Iceland is expensive so souvenirs are pricy. Honestly, it was fun to just look at everything (without buying). Our evenings were filled with casually strolling through many of the troll, wool, Viking, and catchy phrase embossed stores.
For Our Next Visit
There was so much to see and do in Reykjavik we will have to come back! Our list for next time includes the Perlan Museum and the Reykjavík City Museums including the Árbær Open Air Museum, Aðalstræti, Reykjavík Museum of Photography, Reykjavík Maritime Museum, and Viðey Island.
