Welcome back to my Iceland trip planning series! Here you will get invaluable tips on what to pack for summer and winter travel to Iceland.
Medicine And First Aid Kit – A Must For Family Travel!
When travelling, I like to pack all the medicine we could possibly need (read: moms plan for Armageddon). Yes, I could go to a store while away, but I don’t want to be bothered. Simply put, bringing it all saves time and effort. My DIY first-aid kit includes packing pain and allergy medicine (for adults and kids), Band-Aids, and antibiotic ointment. Additionally, I like bringing vitamin packets to keep my immune system up since we tour around so much and operate on less sleep. Lastly, I throw in a nail clipper in case there’s an incident. Here’s my little travel hack: I repurposed this 7-day vitamin organizer for my loose pills and vitamins to make it easy. Then I labeled everything with these cute write-on Mabels Labels.
Ice Gear – Is It Needed For Your Iceland Packing List?
I did more research than one could imagine on crampons aka ice cleats, ice spikes, microspikes. Who knew there were so many options to pack for Iceland so you don’t fall on the ice? We ended up bringing a variety, not using any, and returning them. Guess what? I fell on the ice. With that said there were some times when we visited waterfalls that they would have helped (see above) but for the most part we got by with a good pair of waterproof hiking boots. Rest assured that any tour requiring special gear will provide it for you, so don’t stress.
Footwear
Waterproof hiking boots are a must. They’re not only mandatory for your Iceland packing list for the foot traction, but also, you’ll likely be walking through puddles. Equally important are your socks. I did a ton of research and found these super warm, soft, incredible socks. They fit easily into our boots and didn’t feel bulky at all. As the yin to the waterproof boot yang, bring a pair of flip-flops or shower shoes for the lagoons. While you won’t need them in the pools, showering before entry is required so you’ll want them for the locker room.
Rain Gear
I did so much research on rain gear because apparently when it rains in Iceland it RAINS. It took us six days to experience the wrath of her rain but oh boy, when it rained it poured. I ended up outfitting us all with Frogg Toggs. They have the most incredible lightweight rain jackets (tons of pockets!) and thin, comfortable rain pants (also tons of pockets!). Funny enough, the days we were in and out of the car the most were the same days it rained and snowed. Luckily our Frogg Toggs gear was easy to wear and not bulky at all. In addition to the raincoats and rain pants, they have great compact ponchos too. All of the above fold up small requiring minimal suitcase real estate. These pieces will be assets to our travel wardrobe (not to mention outdoor sporting events) for many years.
Base Layer, Shirts, and Pants
Timing your long underwear need with a sale on long underwear is a beautiful thing. Thanks to the holiday sales before our winter trip to Iceland, I bought each of us a new base layer set for under $10! Then I moved on to fleece-lined pants and possibly bought every pair made trying to find the right one. If you’re not used to walking around in ski pants (me) you’ll want to find a thin pair that’s both comfortable for walking around and sitting in the car. My husband wore jeans most days and we packed ski pants/bibs for the kids (because we already had them). I loved the fleece-lined pants I bought myself so much and they were so warm I didn’t need a base layer! Plus, they had lots of zippered pockets. For our upper bodies we just layered up, packing a t-shirt and sweatshirt for each day. Of course, we topped it all off with our warmest coat.
Gloves and Hats
Since Iceland is cold in all seasons, packing a good pair of warm gloves and a cozy hat are a must. We loved our gloves from Weatherproof and appreciated the bonus zippered pouch to add a hand warmer. Do you see a theme here? Pockets. Additionally, these gloves were a bit longer than usual keeping our arms warm under our coats.
Hand and Foot Warmers
You can’t go wrong packing disposable hand and foot warmers for your Iceland trip. They’re great for colder day tours and a must when hunting for the Northern Lights. Since they’re individually wrapped, extras can be used throughout the year. Each night when we walked around my kids used hand warmers. Going along with Iceland’s sustainability, rechargeable hand warmers are a great option too.
Chargers And Cords Galore
Phones are so much more than phones these days, especially on a trip. They’re your camera, video camera, and your connection to home. Iceland’s scenery is so beautiful that without a doubt you’ll be snapping away nonstop. Some phones are better than others for different shots. For example, newer phones have night mode which works great for capturing the Northern Lights. Fun fact – you can see the Northern Lights better through a camera than with your naked eye. Iceland also has generous Wi-Fi everywhere so you’ll be on your phones a lot. With that said, you’ll be charging them several times a day. For this reason, I suggest packing a cord per person and a multi-head charger with USB and USBc slots so you can charge everything at once. Don’t forget, Iceland is on the European currency (two-round plugs) so be sure to pack a converter as well.
Snacks – A Must On Your Iceland Packing List
Family travel and food go hand in hand. You never know when your kid will get hungry (always), and a protein bar is the answer. Additionally, we don’t like wasting time eating a big breakfast (unless it’s included at the hotel), so we usually eat on the go. There’s a lot of driving in Iceland and while I encourage frequent Skyr yogurt pit stops, adding some sustenance to your Iceland packing list will save your sanity. Go ahead and throw some chocolate in there as well for emergencies!
Bathing Suit, Towel, and Sunglasses
While most of the above talks about the cold, we also want to mention the sun. Fire and ice, baby. It’s sunny in Iceland – even when it’s zero degrees – so don’t forget to pack your sunglasses. You may also want to pack suntan lotion if you’re traveling to Iceland in the Summer. Also, no matter the season, pools and lagoons are a huge part of Icelandic culture (even in the rain and snow) so be sure to pre-book yourself for a few visits and bring a bathing suit. Lastly, most pool admissions don’t include a towel so pack a quick-drying one from home (or be prepared to rent one there). Finally, don’t forget a water-tight bag for your phone for fun aquatic pictures.
Backpack and Reusable Water Bottles
My kids love bringing backpacks on the plane filled with entertainment. They also work great as day packs and long car rides lifesavers. My favorite type of backpack has an outside water bottle pouch and many – can you guess? Pockets. Since Iceland is a recycling and sustainability champion, your best Iceland packing list must also include a reusable water bottle. Everywhere you go will have complimentary, delicious, glacial water waiting for you!
Don’t Forget To Pack Books and Games
When we travel, I strongly suggest (force) everyone to disconnect and read. I love reading books on vacation, especially if they’re related to my destination. Funny enough the two books I read in Iceland didn’t have anything to do with Iceland, but randomly mentioned it! That was exciting. We also like to pack a card game or two in case we have some downtime and get tired of fighting.
Funny Slogans Help When You Forget What To Pack For Iceland
I hope this list helps you when you’re thinking about what to pack for Iceland. But don’t worry, if you forget something they have shops, clothing stores, and supermarkets close to most major sites. You can always pick up what’s needed. Don’t worry, you got this!

It’s the book you offer to everyone you know and talk about with strangers – offering to stand there while they order it. “B-A-R-R and also, get Woman on Fire – go ahead I’ll wait.”
All who borrowed my copy returned it within days, also not putting it down.
It’s just.that.good.
What’s It About?
No spoilers, but… The Goddess of Warsaw is a historical fiction story about a world-famous actress who – at the end of her life – shares her hidden past as a war hero. It unfolds with twists and turns making your jaw drop again and again.
The Holocaust plays a strong role in this book but it’s not a Holocaust book. It’s a book about the triumph of strength and spirit and one hell of a good story with a kick-ass woman lead character.
The World Needs The Goddess Of Warsaw Right Now
With the world as it is right now and so much horror happening TODAY, we need this book to remind us of an unimaginable, unthinkable, atrocious, dark period propelling us to fight and persevere.
We’re at a point in history that’s past shouting NEVER AGAIN, because never again is now.
History is repeating itself and the world is turning away. Again.
People who don’t know (or remember) the facts are believing the louder voices creating unsafe situations around the globe.
Have you seen the videos of people sharing the meaning behind protestor’s shouts shocking them at the terms they’re ignorantly yelling? If not, watch them.
I’m so proud to share this book and hope you go out right now and buy it.
You don’t have to be Jewish to read it. You don’t have to know a Jewish person to enjoy it.
But maybe if you are one of the above, reading it will make you understand a little more why we need allies in the world TODAY. NOW.

Iceland is a very beautiful and family-friendly country, similar in size to the state of Kentucky. You can either stay in Reykjavík – the main city – as a base and take day trips, or move regions every few days for a different experience.
Like many European airlines, the companies that service Iceland have tight carry on bag size restrictions. For your trip to Iceland, know before you go if your bag fits based on their website dimensions or just play it safe and check your bags.
Iceland Has Crazy Weather!
Iceland is a place where you want to bring many different outdoor clothing options. Everything one reads warns that Icelandic weather changes on a dime and this was not a hyperbolic statement. Luckily, I listened and packed for all contingencies. It was not an exaggeration. We had gorgeous sunny weather for five days straight and then on day six the weather turned and our tours were canceled. We were also afraid to leave our hotel and drive because we were cautioned about the wind and doors FLYING OFF (Yes. That is a real concern here).
What To Pack For Iceland – Know Before You Go!
Anticipating all the new gear we’d need for our February trip I went to town on Black Friday buying everything warm and waterproof I could find. This saved me a ton of money and because of the time of year allowed for generous return policies. Costco had great options as did Amazon.
Reykjavík
Keep in mind that while your specific itinerary can dictate your packing needs, most items are universal and useful in both the winter and summer in Iceland. For example, Reykjavík is a city so you walk around like in any city. However, they have the added bonus of geothermal technology flowing underground.
That’s right! Their awesome technology is flowing under the sidewalks melting snow as it falls so many streets are clear immediately. In terms of packing, any warm gear or rain gear works here with a good pair of boots. Chances are you won’t need anything too extreme in Reykjavík.
Waterfalls are gorgeous and an important part of Iceland’s scenery. Most are easy to walk around but many have icy paths. You don’t need any special footwear per se, but crampons could help you here. Also, since the sprays are so strong, waterproof gear is suggested. We packedamazing lightweight raincoats and rain pants that did the trick and took up minimal space in our luggage.
Additionally, if you’re self-driving, be sure to include “parking lot” when putting the waterfalls into Google Maps. We learned this the hard way and had to turn around a few times. Lastly, be prepared to pay a small fee for many of the waterfall parking lots (all take credit cards).
Glacier Exploration
Glaciers are made of… ice! So they are cold. Make sure to pack layers and warm footwear if you’re visiting or hiking on a glacier or ice cave. If you’re doing a proper tour (which you should do for safety purposes) they will provide any specific gear that’s needed for the conditions (crampons and helmets).
Geothermal Steam Heat
Throughout the country, you will see steam bellowing up from the geothermal power plants harnessing energy from within the Earth. Besides being incredible to watch, it is sustainable and natural.
Iceland uses this technology for everything ranging from home heating to cooking bread in the ground. It is a country that values sustainability and this comes through with everything they do.
Lagoons
Outdoor public swimming pools and lagoons are a huge part of the Icelandic culture so be sure to pack bathing suits and visit as many as you can. It’s such a cool experience to go in the heated pools while it’s cold outside. Most pools are family-friendly and offer complimentary admission for kids.
Admission includes a locker with ample room to store your coat and belongings. Towels are often not included with the entrance fee but are available to rent from most lagoons. If I had known this in advance, I would have packed a super thin, quick-drying towel from home. You can also grab one from your hotel, or simply rent one there.
Since you’ll want to take some fun steamy pictures, be sure to pack a water-tight bag for your phone. Additionally, you must shower before entering any lagoon (bring shower shoes!). Most people shower naked, put on their dry bathing suits, then head out for a soak.
Water Water Everywhere
There is lots of beautiful water to look at in every direction but don’t forget about water to drink! Iceland is a super forward country when it comes to sustainability, offering free water everywhere. Make sure to pack a reusable water bottle and enjoy refilling it everywhere you go. Of course, remember to empty it before going through security at the airport in each direction.
Icelandic Cuisine
I’ve read many different reviews about Icelandic food. I’m a brave and experimental foodie and love sampling new things. When I travel, I love trying local cuisines and indigenous foods. With that said, the food in Iceland was great, no need to be afraid.
There are tons of familiar options (burgers – one even served while cows graze below you) with a somewhat British influence (lots of fish and chips). Plus, they have their own delicious high-protein yogurt called Skyr which is a staple in the Icelandic diet.
Since the country is an isolated island just south of the Arctic Circle you can imagine warm, hearty soups are popular as well as lamb and other things found in a cold climate. Be sure to sample the famous Friðheimar tomatoes either at their restaurant on the Golden Circle or from one of their store partners. If you’re adventurous, give their fermented shark – an OG staple – a try, and their licorice-infused vodka (my first duty-free purchase ever!).
Reservations Are Your Key To Success! Know Before Your Go And Book Ahead
Book everything you can in advance as many things will sell out or fill up. Even if you think it won’t – book it as soon as you can. Most places have generous cancellation policies and offer a prepaid discount. The bottom line is even if you’re not a planner, be a planner and book your top choice tours and reservations in advance.

Guess what? March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! That means if you’re forty-five and due for your colonoscopy, you get ten points for going now!
Colonoscopies Need A Rebranding
If you mention getting a colonoscopy people grunt and say two things: the prep is terrible, and the nap is great. I promise you it wasn’t that bad.
My approach was mind over matter. I had to do it, so I didn’t make a STINK. If you think it won’t be a big deal, it won’t!
What’s A Colon?
The colon (aka large intestine or large bowel) is an organ that’s part of your digestive tract. Your colon gets the (mostly) liquid leftovers after your small intestine takes the vitamins and nutrients out of your food. Upon arrival, the liquid is absorbed, and the bacteria break down the remaining material (buzz topic: gut health). Whatever remains goes to the evacuation station.
What’s A Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a medical procedure where a finger-sized flexible camera tipped tube snakes through your colon inspecting the lining and looking for abnormalities. For the duration of this short examination, you’re under light anesthesia.
Why Do We Need Colonoscopies?
Some people need them if they’re suffering from digestive issues. If this is not you, then at forty-five it’s seen as a preventative measure. A colonoscopy is the only way to check inside your body for polyps (pre-cancerous growths) or cancerous growths. Since early stages of colon cancer can be asymptomatic, this relatively easy procedure can potentially save your life.
Don’t Believe Everything You See On The Internet, This Picture Is Actually From My 40th Birthday. Shhh
Why Is The Magic Age For Your First Colonoscopy 45?
As with all cancers, early detection is key. Over the last five decades, people have been developing colon cancer earlier, so they need to be screened younger. Forty-five is the new fifty in colorectal health.
Does Insurance Cover A Colonoscopy?
Yes! Thanks to the Affordable Care Act there should be no out-of-pocket costs involved when getting a preventative colonoscopy. But always double-check with your doctor and insurance company.
What to Expect When You’re Expecting… Your First Colonoscopy
We met our awesome gastroenterologist first for a consultation and then she scheduled the procedure. She asked about our family history, our digestive issues (if any) and took our vitals. Since these appointments can get BACKED UP make sure you call in advance if you’re working within a specific time frame.
Let’s Go DEEPer
During your consultation, you’ll discuss the “dreaded” colonoscopy prep and which one is right for you. At this time, there are several different liquid preps and one pill prep.
She also advised that we be mindful of our diets the week prior to the test by eating only low-fiber foods and avoiding seeds. Additionally, she suggested skipping anything that could get stuck in our teeth – because it could get left BEHIND in our system – messing with the procedure.
Is You First Colonoscopy Prep Covered By Insurance?
Unfortunately for me, the answer was no. We tried all of them but none were fully covered. With that said, since I had to pay, I opted for the pills which seemed the easiest route. Luckily, there is a coupon for the colonoscopy prep pills on the manufacturer’s website bringing the cost down significantly.
It’s A Go For Prep. Dun Dun Duuuun
It’s suggested that the day before a colonoscopy you just drink liquids. You can have water and black coffee which is my go-to anyway (I’m a huge fan of intermittent fasting).
Around 3pm I had some high-protein bone broth to push away the hunger.
At 5pm it was time to start taking the pills.
This prep involved taking half (12) of the pills in the evening with 16oz of water and then the other half (12) in the morning again with 16oz of water.
Both times you wash it all down with an additional 32oz of water. Easy peasy. The whole thing took ten minutes.
People complain that it’s too much to drink (even if you take the pills). But come on – we live in a society where people covet giant water bottles, so think that one of those is all you need. If you like drinking water as much as you like carrying around a trendy cup, you’re good.
The Call of DOODY
Around 7pm (two hours later) it was go time. Luckily, I prepared our lady’s room with magazines, so my confinement was entertaining. Of course, my beloved bidet was there to keep me company as well.
What to know a secret? It wasn’t that bad. To put it another way – if you’re lactose intolerant like me it was like eating pizza without a lactase pill. I mean with three kids I often hide in the bathroom anyway, so this just gave me something to do in there.
The Morning Of Your First Colorectal Cancer Screening
Regardless of your prep method you’ll finish in the morning and continue clearing out your system so it’s ready to party.
Since you can’t eat or drink anything after the prep, aim for a morning appointment so you don’t get hangry.
Flow For The Day
Leave your jewelry at home so you don’t have to remove it at the office. Also, I suggest wearing comfy clothes since you’ll be changing into a gown upon arrival. Finally, you’ll check in with the doctor and anesthesiologist, give a urine sample, get your IV and oxygen, and then lights out!
You’ll wake up on the other side of the hill with a wealth of internal knowledge.
BUTT It Was So Quick!
I woke up and all my wrinkles were gone!
Oh, no wait.
Wrong procedure.
Your first colonoscopy will be under an hour and then you head into the recovery room for about forty-five minutes. After re-checking your vitals you’ll be discharged and on your way.
I woke up enjoying that post-procedure moment of confusion where you fall asleep in one place and wake up in another. To make things even better, a nurse offered me snacks, juice, and coffee! I may make this a monthly thing.
Relaxation and Recovery
At this point, you’re free to eat so head to your favorite restaurant and treat yourself to anything you want. You deserve it!
You’ve earned a day of rest so find your favorite couch, grab the remote, and find a good show or movie to watch. Basically just relax and don’t over-exert your system. My nose was really runny afterward which apparently is a common side effect from the oxygen, but it went away by the next morning.
In Conclusion
Everyone complains that colonoscopy prep is such a big deal. I didn’t find it bad at all – especially since I prepared in advance and was at home close to a bathroom the entire time. The procedure was quick and painless and there was no recovery period.
Putting Your First Colonoscopy BEHIND You
Hooray! You get a gold star. If the doctor finds anything during your first colonoscopy they will send it to the lab. This pathology report will determine how long you can wait to return. Chances are it will be somewhere between 7-10 years.
In the meantime, keep your colon healthy by eating a low-fat, high-fiber diet with lots of leafy green vegetables, drinking lots of water, and exercising.
The END Of The Road
All joking aside, this easy screening is very important and relatively quick and easy. Even if you have an unpleasant experience with the prep from start to finish it’s less than twenty-four hours. Complaining won’t make it any better or easier, so just do it and get it over with as fast as you can.
Worse comes to worse think of the prep as the time you were on Spring Break in college, and you drank the punch… then had to pay the price.
As always, I’m not a doctor so the above is my anecdotal experience. Please consult with a medical professional for any real medical advice.

February break often sneaks up on you because you’re barely recovered from the holidays. It’s also one where the weather could go either way so it makes it hard to plan in advance.
We are very lucky to live in a place that provides endless things to do in every season within a short drive. Additionally, many of these things won’t cost you a cent!
Plus, many provide a little fun and a little history so you can sneak in some learning without your kids knowing.
Lastly, we also love visiting places in the winter that we visit in other seasons showcasing a totally different experience.
So let’s start planning your awesome February break week!
If you’re looking for an elevated (ha!) experience check out the highest point on Long Island at Jayne’s Hill in West Hills. This spot is marked by a big boulder and Walt Whitman quote. The quote is not “yay! I have a mall!”.
The beach is a great place for a winter walk. Sometimes you can find a beach cleanup as well and double-down on your day’s activity by helping the Earth too!
Libraries are the best places to take little kids. Each is unique and some go above and beyond to create incredible play spaces for kids. Plus, it’s all free! They often load up on classes and events over school breaks too. You can easily make up a library tour in your county (and neighboring counties) for the day or for the whole week!
My favorite library tip of all are the free museum passes. Often found on their website or app, you can sign up for these complimentary tickets to local museums and attractions and thank your tax dollars for the membership. The Middle County Library in Suffolk is one of our favorites.
Speaking of the library, if you live in New York State you’re able to get a New York City Public Library Card allowing you to take advantage of their excellent NYC Culture Pass. Here you’ll find all kinds of free passes to amazing museums and cultural institutions across the five boroughs.
Additionally, libraries offer all kinds of free online classes good for the whole family. Also, you know – they have books.
5. Bake Something
Baking is both inexpensive and results in something delicious. If you have a tween or teen suggest they try it themselves. This gives you both a break for an hour and your favorite treat served up to you on a platter! For example – as I’m writing this I just answered the question “should I make cookies or pretzel bombs”. Yes, why don’t you go ahead and make both! Meanwhile – my daughter learned how to make pretzel bombs from a free online library cooking class. #fullcircle
If you have a little shopper nothing is better than walking around Soho. Added bonus if they still have holiday or birthday money to spend!
7. Board Games
Board games can do so much more than sit in piles in your basement. I love giving my kids new games for the holidays and inevitably taking off the plastic over February break. If you hit the jackpot and find a good one then you’ll have countless hours of family fun. Here are some of my favorite family games.
8. Read
I bet you have a list or pile of books you’ve been wanting to read. Now is the perfect time to start. Plus, if you own them finishing one over February break and passing it along means you cleaned your house too!
This is also a great opportunity to snuggle with your kids on the couch. If you need to bargain with them to achieve this goal you can always say if you read for an hour you can play video games for an hour. If you want to spice it up you can add “and for every time you complain the video game time gets reduced by ten minutes”. Looking for a new book? Check out my book suggestions for kids and adults.
9. Coffee And Dessert Shops
Speaking of reading, if you have an avid little reader than make like Friends and go sit in a coffee shop for the afternoon. Bring a book, grab something made of chocolate, a mocha or chai latte, and relax in the quiet. This is a great one-on-one activity to do with a big kid while your little kid stays at home with your plus one.
10. Food For Fun!
Try a new restaurant for breakfast or lunch. There are lots of fun burger places with great shakes or crazy breakfast spots with Nutella filled everything. A new meal is always a fun adventure. Plus, if you go during the day it will fill everyone up so you can sneak by with a light dinner.
11. Build A Fort
Kids love building forts. You can do this simply with couch cushions, pillows, and sheets. Or, you can get fancy with a fort building set or even better a super coolAirFort that pops up in seconds.
12. Make Ice Cream
Adding an ice cream maker into your home is so much fun. Not only does it bring you fresh ice cream all year but it allows a budding chef all kinds experimenting and creativity. Plus, it’s fun to have fresh ice cream in any season! If you didn’t buy one for the holidays President’s Day is a good excuse. Because presidents like ice cream…
13. Movies
February break is a good time to catch up on movies. While there are many you could watch since your kids were born, it’s fun to introduce them to movies you loved from the 80s and 90s. Since you have so much time this week you can even do a movie marathon and watch all the movies in a series. As an added bonus you can discuss if the movie stood the test of time and how an 80s movie could be rated PG or PG-13 and get away with so much!
For a more exciting February break cinematic experience, plan for a movie day on Tuesday at a theater like Showcase Cinema when they offer $5 movies all day.
14. Art Projects
I bet you have a zillion art projects waiting to be made in your house. What better time to make them than February break! This is also a great time to make a collage, vision board, or fun name sign with your kids. If you’re looking to redo your kid’s room now is a good time to get creative as well! This also counts as cleaning your house because you’ll inevitably throw something out (yay!).
15. Start Your Garden Inside Over February Break
February break is the perfect time to start your garden from scratch. It’s also a fun time to start growing flowers. In fact, you can do all types of fun experiments with bulbs too.
If you want some extra credit, start saving the seeds from your fruits and vegetables, dry them out, and then sow them on your counter top in an egg carton or yogurt cups.
If the weather is mild this is also a great time to cut back out of place bushes or branches in your yard. Since it’s winter and they’re dormant it’s much easier to manicure your property now. It’s also a great time to yank out any remaining weeds from the summer so they don’t come back with a vengeance in the Spring.
16. Your Backyard
Just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean your swing set has to be lonely. The winter is a great time to play outside! you can add on a new swing, addition, or reconfigure your current swings to mix things up.
If you have a fire pit, winter s’mores are great! It’s exciting to sit outside in the snow and it can be really pretty.
If you have a budding astronomer, the winter sky is a great time to pull out your telescope. Plus, since it gets dark early it won’t interfere with bedtime.
17. Museums
We spend a ton of time at museums and at this point my kids have their favorites. School breaks are a great time to visit (or revisit) and February break is even better because they are usually inside (warm) and not very busy.
Finding a new park is always exciting. Especially if there’s water or a really pretty view. One of my favorites is Gantry State Park in Long Island City. We also love Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay.
Don’t forget, any park with a handball wall and tennis or pickleball courts is perfect for a few hours of fun February break fun!
20. Zoos & Animal Refuges
The zoo is fun in all seasons! This is a great time to visit some of your favorite animals and see them in their preferred climate.
I always say the sea lions and seals love winter more than anything and will flip for you upon arrival. Also think of all the animals like SNOW leopards who get excited for the winter. This is their time to shine.
Not only are zoos less crowded in the winter but if you’re a member they’re free too! This is a great time to visit a smaller zoo like the Queens Zoo. You can see it all within an hour which is most likely how long your kids can go without complaining that it’s cold.
Party, Vacation, Summer, And Gift Planning Over February Break
With everyone home over break now is a great time to start talking and planning for any upcoming parties or vacations. If you were waiting for some time off then now is the perfect time! You can plan for upcoming birthday parties and even focus on large scale event planning.
If you don’t have any big celebrations coming up now is a great time to start discussing your summer trip or proposed summer backyard additions. With everyone home you can look activities up together and nail it down early.
You can even start thinking about your Mother’s Day and Father’s Day plans and make super early reservations to have your pick of times.
February break is also a great time to take your kids for a haircut. If you take them to a fun place like Sharkey’s Cuts For Kids it’s a great destination for the day!
Finally, pick a date for a fun summer parents night out like on Paddle Pub Long Island or start ordering your camp name labels. Yes it’s super early for all of these but getting ahead of the game will take something off your plate once spring sports start and you don’t know which way is up.
Added Bonus: Attractions And Road Trip Destinations For February Break
If you still want more, get in your car and go explore! We have an abundance of activities in every direction! Remember driving in the winter can be tricky so always make sure you’re extra vigilant for ice and scary road conditions. With that said, some of our favorite destinations include:
Also, while some of these are no longer running, there are a lot more winter ideas on here too!
You’ve Mastered February Break, See You For April Break!
Ok, February break is mastered and you’ve spent little to no money on a great week. You’re full from all the baked goods and you cleaned your house. Sounds like a pretty successful week to me.
Make sure to save this post for April break when the flowers will be popping out and you’ll be ready for a new adventure!

Have A Jewish Feast Of The Seven Fishes On Christmas Eve!
For decades I’ve hoped and prayed that a friend – any friend – would invite me to the traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner The Feast of The Seven Fishes.
This Christmas Eve tradition sounds like so much fun. Yet I’ve never been able to experience it firsthand. Throughout my decades of school, work, life, and travel I’ve heard the tale but never caught the whale. OK, a whale isn’t a fish.
This year I’m finally giving up. With that said, I would do it myself but I’m not Italian.
But wait! The fish has all kinds of symbolism in the Jewish religion too… that’s my in! Thus, this year I’m creating my own destiny, taking the fish by the fins, and throwing my own Jewish Feast Of The Seven Fishes.
Fish Have Been Attacking My Subconscious
In truth, I think the desire to attend a Feast of The Seven Fishes influenced my subconscious for decades. Perhaps all of my aquarium, fish hatchery, and whale museum visits have been my attempt to fill this void. Maybe even my unabashed love of fish sticks or closeted love of Filet-O-Fish.
It’s possible that even my beloved service goldfish – of blessed memory – was just a catalyst to get me to this moment.
It’s Time To Create My Own Jewish Feast Of Seven Fishes
Since my 40s is all about grabbing life by the roe, I’m done waiting. The Jewish Feast of the Seven Fishes is on. With that said, HELLO – if Jews know how to do one thing well it’s put together a spread of fish. I mean isn’t break-fast YOUR favorite meal too?
It seems combining our love of a cold fish spread plus the ease of a Taco Tuesday layout (mmm fish tacos) will make this family meal a Christmas Eve hit.
Not to mention if you want to be lazy you can order most of these shelf-stable fishes on the internet. You don’t even need to leave your house or cook them and poof, dinner is done.
My Jewish Feast Of The Seven Fishes Menu
Note: you may want to go all out and add in some bagels too.
1. Lox
Who doesn’t love Lox? Don’t tell me, I don’t want to know you. Lox is smoked salmon and is a staple for Sunday mornings, brises, brunches, break-fast, and any day that you’re hungry. We are a HUGE lox household. I even love it in omelets and on matzah pizza. Send help, I need a loxtervention.
2. Whitefish Salad
A delicious expensive baked fish salad that is mixed with mayo. This is both so delicious and a good fish to teach you the concept of a little goes a long way. Accordingly, too much whitefish salad and you go on whitefish overload. Definite whitefish yin-yang vibes. While you can get this online, I’d go to your local bagel store and pick it up fresh.
3. Salmon Salad
Baked salmon salad is often seen with its bestie whitefish salad. Also cooked and mixed with mayo it’s always a slam dunk. Similar to whitefish salad, if you eat too much, you’re going to oy. Since this is salmon’s second appearance on my list, I’ll share the over the top concept of putting lox on top of baked salmon salad. But only if you drive a motorcycle, because it’s wild (like the salmon you should be eating…). While you can also buy this online, I’d opt for the fresh version too.
4. Tuna
Tuna is probably the most versatile fish ever with a zillion different versions. My favorite is the bougie yellowfin in olive oil (turquoise can from Trader Joe’s, gold can anywhere else). I found this during my rebellious days in college when I broke from the family and decided to stop adding mayo. The quality of this fish is amazing and the taste is so vibrant from the olive oil that nothing else is needed. You can even stand in your kitchen and eat it out of the can while your husband gives you the stink eye (stink because sometimes fish smells… but really because he’s way too judgy).
5. Sardines
I love sardines. There I said it. I feel like sardines are the unsung heroes of Passover, which is usually when I eat them. Now that the “new” fancy tin fish craze is swimming around everywhere (the puns write themselves) I laugh and point out that your grandpa probably ate them too. They are so good and it’s fun to pull back the tin because you feel like you’re revealing a prize. I recommend the boneless and skinless version because ew – bones and skin…
6. Gefilte Fish – A Jewish Feast Regular
Certainly the most renowned “Jewish fish,” and as a result, no Jewish Feast of fish would be complete without it. Gefilte Fish is a fish medley that generally contains carp and pike. We prefer fancy gefilte fish made by our supermarket’s fishmonger (the best professional name ever). Our tradition is not only serving this handmade fish but then debating which one doesn’t have salt because they look the same and we forget.
7. Herring
I would marry herring if it was socially acceptable. I feel like I’m losing my fish cred when I declare that each is my favorite… but the truth is, I really love pickled herring. Subsequently, I always forget about it so when I see it, I get really excited. Herring comes in many forms but the most popular is in cream or wine sauce. Since one of the many plights of Ashkenazi Jews is lactose intolerance, give me herring in wine sauce any day and just let me be.
On Theme Jewish Feast Of The Seven Fishes Dessert And Party Favor
Duh, dessert is obviously Swedish Fish! Then pass out some Miracle Fish fortune tellers and send your guests on their way.
The Fish Options Are Endless
If you like the idea of a Jewish Feast of the Seven Fishes but want alternate fish ideas, the sea’s the limit! You can go wild and try sable, trout, or mackerel. Additionally, if you want to expand on the cold theme try ceviche or poke bowls. Alternatively, you can be lazy and order sushi. You still get credit if you call it a Jewish Feast of the Seven Fishes as long as you count. But you’ll probably want to order Chinese food the next day (Christmas) and that’s too much salt.
This post is dedicated to my beloved goldfish HBtF (2020-2022).

Thanks for coming back to my Israel planning series! In this edition, we’ll be discussing fun Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is filled with a tremendous – almost overwhelming – amount of history. But also, tons of public art, beautiful parks, museums, and lots of family nightlife. This post will please visitors of any age with a wide variety of interest levels and attention spans.
Do My Visits In The 90’s Count As Part Of Fun Jerusalem History?
This was my third trip to Jerusalem, so I felt like I had a head start in planning a fun Jerusalem tour. My goal was to entice my kids with super cool sites so they would be interested and enjoy themselves. With that said, I loved showing them my repeat highlights. However, it was even more exciting to find new places for us to explore together.
The Kotel And The Kotel Tunnel Tours
At the top of my list – and the first site we visited – was The Western Wall (aka Kotel) and Kotel tunnels. I was both here and not here in the 90’s, as the Kotel tunnel tours were not open yet to the public. I was SO excited to see these tunnels – more aptly an underground ancient city. They were absolutely incredible! Of all the fun Jerusalem sites we visited, this was the top winner. It was so amazing to see the exact hole where the original explorer descended. Thus beginning the unearthing process of this ancient wonderland of hidden treasure. The Kotel tunnel tours are a MUST for your trip and something you should book in advance.
In this ceremony, we were guided by one of their hosts about the meaning of becoming a Bat Mitzvah as well as lighting the candles and reciting important prayers. Next, my daughter decorated two candle holders, one to keep and one to donate (through the foundation) to a Holocaust survivor who was unable to have a Bat Mitzvah. The Foundation offers many service choices including a complimentary Mitzvah at the wall if you’re looking for something more traditional.
Yad Vashem
The Holocaust history museum and garden – Yad Vashem – is an important stop on your Jerusalem tour. Since my boys (6 & 9) were too young for entry, we walked around the beautiful grounds while my husband and daughter (13) toured with a private guide provided by the museum.
Jerusalem Old City Tour And New City Tour
We toured the old and new cities of Jerusalem with a private walking tour guide. Since we’re history lovers it was great to have someone dedicated to our every question and interest in both parts of the city.
With our old city tour, we visited all four quarters of the old city, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Cardo, and everything in between.
Our new city tour included Mount Herzl and the Machane Yehuda Market. Since Israel is a country built on the backs of its heroes it was remarkable to visit the military cemetery with a guide who brought the soldier’s stories to life.
Lastly, we closed out the day (the best way!) by learning about a melting pot of diverse cultures through our bellies. Even better, both sites are easily accessible by the light rail!
Tower Of David Museum
The Tower of David Museum – with its beautiful overlook – was a favorite from my previous trip to Jerusalem. Not only does it have some incredible ruins but it’s home to a huge model which my kids loved. Additionally, as a little fun nod to my first visit – if you look up from the lobby rotunda you’ll find one of Chihuly’s glass-blown sculptures which remains from the exhibit I saw in the 90s.
Ramparts Walk
We absolutely loved the Ramparts Walk. This historic and adventurous walking path (in the wall!) above the old city was such a unique fun Jerusalem experience and one of our favorites. The walk begins in the moat around the Tower of David Museum and continues around each quarter offering a birds-eye view. The stone path is filled with plaques, statues, and even some walkways as narrow as your arms!
Shabbat In Jerusalem
Celebrating Shabbat in Israel is pretty special, even more so in Jerusalem. We were lucky to visit with family over a handsomely prepared meal as our kids clicked over the universal dialog of LEGO and foreign language curse words. It was beautiful to see them get along so well and share this special evening.
As a college student, I remember Ben Yehuda Street being the nighttime hot spot. I loved revisiting and finding the same energy (and stores!) of my youth. Even better, my daughter bought an IDF sweatshirt at the same location where I bought an IDF T–shirt twenty-five years ago!
The Most Fun Jerusalem Hotel!
We couldn’t have found a more perfect place to stay for our five nights in Jerusalem than Abraham Jerusalem. I fell in love with their website and vibe, and couldn’t wait to see it translated in front of me. For more details, check out my family-friendly Israel accommodations post.
On our first Jerusalem day trip, we joined a group bus trip to Ein Gedi, Masada, and the Dead Sea. Ein Gedi was incredible and it was fun to experience terrain (and waterfalls!) we don’t usually see on our hikes around Long Island. Additionally, Masada was fascinating for both the story and the landscape as well as the unbelievable technology that existed thousands of years ago. Finally, like all families traveling to the Dead Sea, we were excited to get the obligatory floating family picture for our scrapbook.
You can also visit these fun Jerusalem day trips from Tel Aviv or on your way north or south.
Conclusion
The Jerusalem area is jam-packed with everything one could want for a fantastic family destination. I guarantee you will have fun, learn, spark interesting conversations, eat delicious foods, and return home with the best memories of this remarkable place! Plus, if you’re named Ben there are a LOT of good photo ops!
*I put together our Israel itinerary and then reached out to business owners to work together. All opinions above are my own. No compensation was received for my opinions. In some cases, a discount or hosted experience was provided in exchange for my honest review.*
