Your Kids CAN Sit Still At Mealtime With This Learning Tablecloth!

Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” Learning Tablecloth

The Mint Chip Mama Table Time Learning Tablecloth

Allow me to introduce you to a new, great tool that will keep your kids sitting on their tushies, patiently waiting for you at the dinner table. Did I get your attention?

It’s A Learning Tablecloth!

I present to you the newly created Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” learning tablecloth – filled with all kinds of fun and quirky illustrations that “sneak” fantastic and entrancing concepts in front of your hungry impatient children at meal time. My almost five year old daughter loved it immediately. In fact her first reaction says it all.

The Mint Chip Mama Table Time Learning Tablecloth

After a few minutes patiently (yes! PATIENTLY!) waiting for dinner, face down, eyes darting all over, she said “So, Mama, it’s a tablecloth, but when I’m waiting for my food, I can – like – look at it!” Followed by “It’s a pattern! Look, I LOVE THIS! It’s math! MATH! I’m supposed to learn math!”. I could not make this up. Slam. Dunk. Like the Jessica Seinfeld cookbook, of tablecloths.

Of Course A Teacher Thought Of This!

Conceived by teacher Micky Afnan and lovingly illustrated by The Simpsons® Emmy nominated animator Rob Oliver, the Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” learning tablecloth makes learning math fun and engaging for pre-k and kindergarten kids aged two through six. Your kids will be happy (and quiet!). They will learn things you want them to learn. They will sit still. And, as a bonus, if your husband likes to quote The Simpsons as much as mine does, he will be happy seeing this in his house!

The Mint Chip Mama Table Time Learning Tablecloth

Quite simply, my daughter is enamored with this tablecloth. The Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” learning tablecloth features a wide variety of math related lessons that cover the educational State Standards children must learn to progress to the next grade. All of the lessons feature wonderfully detailed, quirky animal characters and imagery. There are patterns, days of the week, months, seasons, learning to count to 50, simple addition, identifying geometric shapes, understanding “less than” and “greater than,” how to tell time, and over 20 other math related concepts to keep your kids sitting still at the dinner table.

It’s A Safe Addition To Your Table

The Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” learning tablecloth is made from PEVA, which has the feel of vinyl but no harmful PVCs or BPAs and cleans up easily with a damp cloth. It measures 52″x72″, and fits on a rectangular or oblong table that seats four to six people.

In addition to a learning tool, the Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” learning tablecloth makes a fabulous “peek-a-boo” partner, so I would recommend getting some clips to keep it in place… I  learned this the hard way!

Brand Heritage

Here is a little more on Table-Time because as you know – I LOVE learning about the heritage of brands:

At five years old, Micky Afnan was often found sitting in her parent’s country kitchen in rural Coburg, Oregon. She was looking at a tablecloth her mother made from a US map – with all of its state capitals. She wasn’t trying to learn any of the capital names, yet two months later she knew them all. Somehow, just by being exposed to this information in a relaxed setting, every state capital’s name magically found its way into her mind!

After 30 years of teaching, Micky thought it was an opportune time to build on that simple idea from her childhood. Therefore, she created a low-tech/high impact teaching tool that would help busy parents accelerate their child’s learning. After two years of planning, sketching, and character development the Table-Time Look & Learn “Mostly Math” learning tablecloth was born. The perfect addition to your family, an attention grabbing – battery free – object that gathers families to the most important place of all in the home, the dinner table.

Car Seat Safety – Read This Now.

Here at The Mint Chip Mama we care about Winter Safety. A few weeks ago we shared some very important winter driving tips from our friends over at Kelley Blue Book. Today we want to share some winter car seat safety tips from our friends at Evenflo. I became a big fan of Evenflo when I started using their breast pump and love the philosophy of the company, so listen up!

With slick roads, icy conditions and heavy traffic, winter travel can be a difficult time on the road. This is especially true when traveling with young children. If you are like me, and travel with young children in their car seats at least twice a day, pay attention.

Sarah Haverstick, Evenflo’s  Safety Advocate and certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, has come up with the below essential tips to ensure safe traveling with children this winter season.

1. The most important thing to remember each time you get in your car is to:

Remove your child’s bulky coat before placing him/her in the car seat.

Why? Because coats can compress during a crash which is not good.

However, once the child has been secured, you can put the coat on backwards over the harness. You can also keep extra blankets in the car to place over your child, once they are secured.

If you want to go a step further, check out this new – and what looks like amazing – option for a car seat approved called the Cozywoggle. I’m dying to get my hands on one of these so my poor kids don’t have to freeze this winter!

2. Traveling with wings instead of wheels? It is recommended that all children use age-appropriate car seats on planes – even kids under two. Check with your carrier about buying a discounted seat for children under two as well as any restrictions on car seat use in flight. It’s also a good idea to check the label on your car seat before leaving for the airport to make sure it is FAA approved.

3. This last tip is the most important. It is important no matter what the weather is like outside. Luckily, it is very easy to do:

Get your car seat installation inspected.

As I mentioned back in September, during Child Passenger Safety Month, if you are in the 11803 area, Hassell Auto Body (located at 390 Rte 109 in West Babylon, (631) 587-5500) will happily check your car seat installation weekdays from 10am – 2pm. No charge, no inconvenience, no muss, no fuss, just a smile and check-list of safety. It takes about 15 minutes. If you are not located on Long Island, please visit Safe Kids Worldwide or safecar.gov to find a location near you that will check the installation of your car seat. This is a simple step that could save your child’s life. Yes, I mean to be that dramatic.

If you are in the market for a new car seat, Evenflo has two worth mentioning:

The  Evenflo Platinum Protection Seriesis line of car seats that features NASA-developed Outlast technology, a temperature regulating fabric that keeps children comfortable during hot and cold weather by actively absorbing and storing hot and cold temperatures and releasing as needed. The Platinum Series line includes the All-In-One seat, accommodating a child from 5-110 lbs., as well as a Convertible and Harnessed Booster seat.

20141231 Car Seat Safety Tips

The  Evenflo ProComfort Protection Seriesis available as an All-In-One, Convertible, and Belt-Positioning Booster. This line of seats is made with an innovative Gel-Matrix cushion that helps reduce pressure point build up. High pressure build up can create extreme discomfort during a long trip or car ride, which is why equalizing pressure points plays a vital role in keeping children comfortable and safe.

20141231 Car Seat Safety Tips 2

Both seats above come with the new Evenflo SureSafe System. Whether it be an Evenflo All-In-One, Convertible, or Infant Car Seat, all Evenflo car seats now come equipped with Latch Guides and Quick Connectors that increase proper installation.

Here’s to Being SAFE!

Thank you everyone for making this year – my first – as The Mint Chip Mama so great.

7 Winter Driving Tips to Keep You Safe On The Road

Winter driving can be dangerous if you are not properly prepared. I hope these winter driving tips will keep you safe on the road.

As a walking everywhere Manhattanite I didn’t drive a car for the better part of thirteen years. When we ventured east, lord knows, my husband had to drive. Just like he has to hold the remote. So I enjoyed looking out the window. Like a dog. Woof.

Winter Driving Tips

Cut to last January. We moved out to Long Island and suddenly I was a homeowner with two kids and a SUV. I needed a refreshed on winter driving tips. I had to drive to school drop off and pick up every day. As a shrimp who hadn’t driven in what felt like 100 years, I decided to test drive every SUV on the market because I just couldn’t find the right fit. I was like the Goldilocks and the Three Bears of test drivers for a solid two weeks. I finally decided a 2014 Subaru Forrester was juuuust right.

The Mint Chip Mama: 7 Winter Driving Tips to Keep You Safe On The Road

My first car! Now if only I could get the bluetooth to understand “call home”.

Now, on this gross, gross rainy Nor’easter day I sit and cringe about the upcoming winter. As indicated by the squirrels in my backyard – literally storing nuts for the winter (thanks for the holes, shmucks) – the next few months are going to be brutal.

With that said, since my blog is all about fun and safety and helping my fellow humans make the world a better place, I wanted to share some smart winter driving tips from the experts over at Kelley Blue Book.

The Mint Chip Mama: 7 Winter Driving Tips to Keep You Safe On The Road

Our car – which we parked on the street in Mahattan – after a bad snowstorm in January 2005.

1. Make certain your car’s electrical system is prepared for cold, wet weather.

Cold diminishes the effectiveness of a car’s battery, so if your battery was on the edge in the fall, get it checked ASAP. Check the charging system (the alternator) too while you’re there to be safe. You don’t want to get stuck with a car that won’t start. Even worse, you don’t want to get stranded in between errands when you are late to pick-up your child and your phone battery died 10 minutes ago because you left your charger on your kitchen counter, again (not that that ever happens…).

2. Make sure your car has proper antifreeze/coolant in the cooling system.

Antifreeze is a no-brainer when the temperature dips below freezing.  What is less intuitive is that your car can still overheat even when it is freezing outside.  Say what? When you are at the mechanic, ask him to check your antifreeze/coolant levels, as well as the belts and hoses.

3. Check out your tires.

Make sure your all-season tires have good tread depth and are at the proper inflation pressures. If you live in the Snow Belt, you may want to upgrade to dedicated winter tires. Yes, it is an investment, but well worth it for the increased safety and peace of mind you gain.

4. Visibility is often compromised in winter weather, so be certain your windshield wipers and windshield washers are working properly.

Know how you keep saying “I need new wiper blades”? Go on Amazon now and order them. Now.  You will have them in 2 days. At your front door. There is even a little drop-down to get you to the correct ones for your vehicle. If your wipers have been soaking up the sun all summer, they are probably compromised, so treat your car to a new set (that means both front and rear). Check your washer fluid levels too.

5. Prepare your winter driving skills.

In the winter you will often drive over surfaces covered in snow, ice and freezing rain. Learn how to handle your car in these situations by practicing in an empty parking lot. It is totally cool to have someone hold up a sign that says “Do Not Try at Home” while you whip around doing fishtails.

6. Don’t drive on “E.”

I am sooo guilty of this. Bad weather can come quickly, and it might leave you marooned. In such an instance the last thing you want to do is run out of gas, because that can turn your car’s warm cabin into a deep freeze. You don’t have to top off every day, but don’t run the car near empty either. I pass a Hess station several times a day. I’m obsessed with the price of gas. It went down NINE cents yesterday within a few hours! NINE CENTS! By the way, their truck looks really cool this year. Like something from Knight Rider.

7. Plan for a worst-case scenario.

Despite one’s best efforts, you might find yourself stranded. That’s when prior preparation can help you.  Having warm clothing, gloves, an operating flashlight, and water or liquids in the car can aid your survival and rescue in inclement weather. This may or may not also include a few emergency Peppermint Patties. If you live in an area that gets heavy snow, chains can aid traction considerably and kitty litter can help you extricate your car if it gets stuck (meow). Throw in a good book, and you can profitably pass the time. Yes, this counts as “me” time. No, don’t call your spouse and say you are stranded just to be left alone for an hour. Actually— if you have the Peppermint Patties….

The Mint Chip Mama: 7 Winter Driving Tips to Keep You Safe On The Road

Like the Subaru commercial, right? (I just cried watching it again)

In the market for a new car? Let me share two great lists the experts over at Kelley Blue Book have hand-picked for the upcoming winter weather as well as other driving challenges: 10 Best All-Wheel Drive Cars & SUVs under $25,000 (including the #1 winner – ahem, my beloved Subaru Forrester!) and the overall 10 Best Cars for Winter.

Sadly, none of these come with an in-car app that routes you to the nearest drive thru Dunkin Donuts. Nor do they come with a competent robot to walk your child into the building so you don’t have to get out of the car. Maybe in the 2016 models…

Stay Safe. Stay Warm. Remember These Winter Driving Tips

Hope this helps. Stay warm. Stay safe. Looking forward to writing a “Summer Driving Tips” (to accompany these winter driving tips) in a few months. Sneak peak—open sunroof, sip iced tea, go to beach. Now, doesn’t that sound better?

I started RSDubs Ribbons haute couture hair accessories with my daughter in April of 2014. She was looking for some specific hair ribbons and we could not find them. Having a background in the arts as well as a kid who loves to do arts and crafts, RSDubs Ribbons was born. We often sit together and design the hair accessories, which is fun for both of us. I cut the grosgrain ribbon and she picks out the organza ribbons to compliment it. I have two children, my 4.75 daughter (don’t you dare say she is 4.5) and my 1 year old son.

Prior to being a Monpreneur and attending the Mompreneur Extravaganza, I worked in finance, marketing, and customer service for luxury fashion and cosmetic brands. I started writing for Macaroni Kid while living in Manhattan and then The Huffington Post. I launched this blog, The Mint Chip Mama in August of 2014.

My office hours are both on the weekend – when we are able to design the hair accessories and at night while I sit on the couch with very busy hands watching tv with my husband.

You can find me on Facebook and Twitter.

What sets RSDubs Ribbons apart? RSDubs Ribbons are the original haute couture organza ribbon and character grosgrain ribbon hair accessories made just for you! All of our hair accessories can be customized with any character grosgrain ribbon and your choice of colored organza ribbon. RSDubs Ribbons are perfect for school/cheer fundraising and party favors. I am more than happy to donate to any charity that is important to you, just ask!

See you all on Monday at the Mompreneur Extravaganza!

Celebrities Like The Circus Too!

I am a big fan of the circus. Not clowns (ew! They scare the bejesus out of me) but the circus. I used to drag my husband pre-kids and now I am happy to drag my whole family! This was our third year taking our daughter. The first year was exciting because they made an announcement that the actor (one of my favorites) Eli Wallach was in the audience. I couldn’t resist saying hello during intermission and telling him my favorite movie was Keeping the Faith.

He could not have been nicer. Last year I bought tickets so far in advance I did not know I’d have a new baby keeping me home (my lucky husband got to go). This year we all went together and even the baby (who just turned one at the time) loved it. We were unsure if he would sit still but given our lack of a babysitter for the day, he came along. I think he was the most enthralled!

A Camel Ate My Neighbor’s Popcorn

My absolute favorite moment of the day was during the animal parade, when a camel literally stuck his head into my neighbor’s bucket of popcorn. As if that wasn’t funny enough, he did it a second time. We are still unsure if this was part of the act… if it was, my neighbor certainly wasn’t in on it! Kudos to the Big Apple Circus for replacing his popcorn immediately!

Vladimir and Olga Smirnov

As always the circus was filled with acts that you should not and could not try at home. My favorite was the outrageous costume changing couple Vladimir and Olga Smirnov. I honestly do not know how they did it. You think they have the clothes layered but they keep coming off. I really want to know how they did it! Seriously, it was so cool.

Tatevik Seyranyan and Odbayasakh Dorjoo

Also impressive was not one, but two ladies – Tatevik Seyranyan and Odbayasakh Dorjoo – who folded themselves into one small box. Yep, two ladies. Folded in half. One box. Do not try this at home folks. Makes my flipped downward facing dog seem pretty lame… The photo below only shows 50% of the women who fit in this box. At the same time.

…And All That Jazz

And of course what would the circus be without horses, dogs and other animals performing astonishing tricks before your eyes, trampolines, flying trapeze, “Chinese yoyos”, foot juggling, and an aerial space act that will leave you bedazzled and beguiled (spoiler alert, there was a spaceship. My daughter was MESMERIZED).

When My Baby Stopped Nursing I Made Breast Milk Lemonade

So I made breast milk lemonade. November 21st came and went. Nary a tear was shed by moi. In fact, I didn’t realize that yesterday was my day – even as I watched a commercial for the new Exodus: Gods & Kings movie (nice timing 20th Century Fox!).

Look at that!

This, people, we call acceptance and closure.

20141122 Breastmilk Lemonade

Celebrating the big O-N-E October 12th, 2014

Acceptance & Closure

For those of you who did not read my last blog post, my delicious little thirteen month old boy – who was an avid nurser and exclusively breastfed baby – stopped nursing, cold turkey, on October 12th at 11pm. He formed a union of one and created a nursing strike. After running around like a chicken without a head and not knowing if this was a nursing strike or just the end of an era, I decided I needed to pick an end date and prepare to move on.

That date was yesterday.

I chose the date November 21st – which was 40 days and 40 nights later because it sounded round and good. Right, Moses?

I am Ok

Truth be told, after using my beloved pump for a month and unsuccessfully trying to keep my supply up in case he returned, I gave up. Bless its little sucka sucka Little Engine That Could heart, my milk supply plummeted and I had to let it go.

And I am OK.

I am.

I am surprisingly OK.

It was extremely helpful having an end date in my mind and I thank all of my friends who suggested it.

I can move on now.

My little baby has become a little man in the last month. He is about to walk, he is using a fork, he knows exactly what he wants and he even started nodding ‘yes’ and ‘no’ like a little oracle. In fact, a few days ago I asked him if he was over nursing and he nodded ‘yes’. Then he smiled somewhat condescendingly at me, like it was time for me to move on too.

The Mint Chip Mama - breast milk lemonade

Closure AKA Breast Milk Lemonade

I felt at that moment, he gave me closure.

This was not a nursing strike. He was done.

He was not going to cross the picket line. He was giving me breast milk lemonade.

He Started Nodding

I should also mention I asked him if he had pooped and he nodded, I went to change his diaper and upon opening it and seeing no poop he started laughing maniacally. This kid has got some sense of humor!

So why breast milk lemonade?

While this was not what I wanted, I have to look at the positive side of it. I must admit so many positive things have happened once I decided to move on.

Moving On From Breast Milk Lemonade

1. I’ve taken all of my nursing bras and shirts out of my dresser, making room for the new clothes I bought as a gift to myself for the good effort (although I refuse to give up my Glamourmom tanks which are the perfect length (past tush) and have a super supportive shelf bra – they are seriously the most perfect tanks on Earth. It’s cold people: layer, layer, layer).

2. I can finally use cream to get rid of my stretch marks – which I wholeheartedly don’t expect to work at all = but a girl can dream… War wounds my arse.

3. My boobs look fantastic! I’m completely fine announcing this to the world. In fact, you should really look next time you see me. As someone who has fought body image issues my whole life because of the size of my breasts, I can finally say they look great! After nursing my daughter they just got bigger and (fill in a negative adjective of your choice) but now, I feel like I’ve got myself a nice pair. Like the ideal reduction minus the co-pay and recovery time.

4. My hair, which is still falling out by the fistful, looks fantastic thanks to my new Healthilocks hair products.

5. I can go into the city for holiday events and let someone else put my son to sleep.

6. I can take my daughter to events and spend the whole day in the city without feeling engorged.

7. I can sleep late on the weekends! (Thanks honey!)

The Mint Chip Mama - breast milk lemonade

Having fun at the KidzVuz Holiday Party!

More Changes

I even changed my health insurance due to a “change of life” event (OK, not for this reason but I appreciate the theme) and I finished a huge bottle of moisturizer – which is a big deal in my house because I am a complete skin care junkie and finishing a bottle of moisturizer so I can try a new one is a big deal for me. If you are like me you totally get that too.

In conclusion, renewal all around. Too bad it’s not the Spring.

The Mint Chip Mama - breast milk lemonade

In Rome, April 2013

We Still Have Special Time

The saddest part for me was that my son didn’t seem to want to cuddle with me anymore. But thank goodness, I can happily say that returned. Cuddling 2.0 – we read books and snuggle. Equally delicious, just without the libation. Plus he is really, really into hugging me right now (yay!).

Would I trade it all in for my son to start breast feeding again? In a heartbeat. However, I’m OK and accept that he is just not that into me (and by me I mean my milk… he is actually quite fond of me).

I don’t think I will ever know why he stopped nursing. Whatever “virus” he may have had is long gone, the teeth I anticipated popping out never came, I just don’t know. I still find it so weird that something between 7 pm – after a full day of nursing – and 11 pm, when he woke up screaming, caused him to stop. But he is OK, growing and healthy – and in the end that is all that matters.

The Mint Chip Mama - breast milk lemonade

Cue the music.

In the great words of Jesse Frederick:

When you’re lost out there and your all alone
A light is waiting to carry you home
Everywhere you look.

Strike it Up! I Wanna I Wanna Feed You Breast Milk – Stop This Breastfeeding Nursing Strike

On October 12th, two days after he turned 12 months old, my little boy stopped nursing. He went on a nursing strike.

Cold turkey.

Like he was completely done. Full-on nursing strike.

After nursing him his normal four or five feedings that day, and then putting him down for bed at 7pm, he woke up screaming bloody murder (a different cry, not an “I’m waking up to say hello” cry) at 11pm and refused to nurse ever since.

For those keeping a count (read: my boobs) that would be 23 days ago.

The Mint Chip Mama - Nursing Strike

Happily nursing in August.

What Does A Nursing Strike Look Like?

For the first two days he latched for a second and then stopped because he was hysterical. Then he just turned away absolutely hysterical. Then he wouldn’t even try. Good times. The more hysterical he became the more hysterical I became. I feel like I’m running around like a chicken without a head.

He also refused the pacifier that night and has since hysterically cried himself to sleep for every bedtime and naptime because all of his soothing methods flew out the window. According to the doctors (I took him to three pediatricians and a dentist) he is in no pain and should just be left hysterical so I don’t start a pattern. It’s been awesome.

Why do I think this is a “nursing strike” and not that he is actually done nursing? Because I think he was teething, or in pain, or saw a ghost, I don’t freaking know.

But according to lactation specialists and every webpage on the interwebs, this is not how a baby stops nursing.

Is it Self Weaning?

Weaning happens gradually and usually begins around 18-24 months. I experienced this first hand when my daughter weaned herself a few years ago. That was the perfect wean and my grand idea was to do it again the same way. But as my father once said – Man plans and G-d laughs.

Yes, yes, I am so completely happy that I successfully breastfed these last twelve months and am not saying there is anything wrong with stopping breastfeeding after a year. What I am saying is I am not ready to stop and it is extremely upsetting that I don’t know why this happened and I can’t figure out how to fix it. No one asked me! I’m not done. I am not ready! Plus, is something going on with him that I am missing causing him to stop?

The Mint Chip Mama - Nursing Strike

A seaside suckle in July.

I have been a wreck, constantly living in a state of limbo where I don’t know what to do with myself. In addition, I am sure my hormones are also going crazy. No doubt they are partly to blame for me not knowing which way is up the last three weeks. My packed away pump came out again because if he does plan to cross the picket line at some point I want my milk to be there for him. Alternately, I have not been pumping more than once or twice a day because I’m afraid I will have too much of a supply if he is, in fact, just not that into me anymore.

This Is Nursing Strike Hell

Either way, I am in hell. I miss nursing. I miss the quiet intimacy and sweet snuggling. At first he wouldn’t even snuggle with me which was excruciating, but now I am getting my snuggles back. In fact, he just fell asleep on me for the first time in months. It was absolutely delicious. Folded in half, his little head on my chest, his little hand on my tummy. I could have stayed there like that for hours. But I got cold, because I was trying to do skin to skin with him to lure him back to my milk jugs. I try this suggested method all day long. If you have twenty five cents and like peep shows, drive by my house. It’s like Vegas in here.

Loss of Control

As I was sitting there in the kangaroo cuddle position, I was thinking about a concept in my friend Donna Ellenbogen’s Family Wellness Solutions model called “loss of control”. In a nutshell experiencing any type of loss of control – sucks because you lose control. You cannot control the situation. And this freaking sucks. You feel helpless.

I was thinking how twelve months ago in true “loss of control” fashion this little folded boy came into the world breech, breaking my water & resulting in an emergency C-section. If you knew me then you would know I would have done anything not to have had a C-section (a view I still hold especially after having one!). But he had other ideas. In fact I did everything to avoid it – from lying upside down on an ironing board at night, to flipping in the pool for hours while my daughter was at school, to making my mom burn moxibustion next to my toes. But he had his own convictions and wouldn’t flip. Of course later we learned the cord was around his neck, so good thing he didn’t flip.

Loss Of Control Nursing Strike Or He Is In Control?

Now here we are once again. My little hoodlum is dictating something I can’t do anything about and I hate hate hate it. I feel so rejected. But also, I don’t understand how something so loved by him can be cut off so abruptly. Doesn’t he miss it as much as I do?

The Mint Chip Mama - Nursing Strike

I have been thinking a lot about other women who wanted to nurse but couldn’t, and how they must feel. It is horrible! This little person who you just made, grew, and hatched – whether via a painful method or a really painful method, basically tells you to go F yourself. It is not a nice feeling but one of rejection. One I can’t imagine feels any different at day one or day 367. It just sucks. Or I guess – it doesn’t suck…

So Where Does This Nursing Strike Leave Me?

Besides doing all the stuff I find on the internet and following all the advice I’m given, I’ve decided my only choice is to give myself a deadline and then call it. I’ve decided on waiting 40 days and 40 nights in the spirit of my ancestors. So on November 21st, 2014 I will pull the plug (of my pump) and reward myself for giving 150% in this effort.

Sadly, the only thing I have in the books to celebrate this occasion is the Retin-A cream for my stretch marks – which I couldn’t use while nursing. Couldn’t suck more than that (or not suck – geez, salt in my wounds!). If you see me that day, give me a hug. I will be a sniveling, hysterical ball of mess.

For the love of G-d, cross the picket line!

As Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Said, All You Need Is Just A Little Patience

I like to consider myself a mother with a substantial amount of patience for my children. I would even toast myself to say above average. Forget the baby – I don’t need patience for him. He’s easy, he just requires my constant attention and all the nourishment my body can produce.

You know, small stuff.

I’m talking about my daughter. My wonderful, smart, funny, stubborn little girl with a strong personality (which, of course, she did not get from me…).

Love And Patience For My Children Are Two Different Things

I love this child beyond imagination, stare at her when she sleeps and watch her watch TV. But let’s be honest here. She’s four. That means many things. One of which is acting crazy every so often. Let’s just say when that happens my deep, vast, crater filled lake of patience for my children evaporates VERY FAST.  And sometimes I yell.

Kids Like To Test Limits Testing MY Patience For My Children

I hate that I yell, I absolutely hate it. It is unacceptable and in fact, worse than how my daughter is behaving at the moment because I am an adult. But it is hard in that moment to remember that I – unlike her – know better.

This topic is in my thoughts a lot and I read about it constantly. I try to learn ways to calm myself down, to increase my patience for my children. Closing my eyes, counting to ten, walking out of the room. All the stuff the experts suggest.

Know what? Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

She is testing my limits. I know this.

Expert Advice

Donna Ellenbogen is a friend and the founder of Family Wellness Solutions, which specializes in addressing the challenges faced by parents and expectant parents. She once shared a phrase that stuck with me. This slightly revised version has become my parenting mantra: “age appropriate yet annoying behavior.”

These five words not only talk me off ledges, but remind me that my four year old is right on target. It is ME who needs to change my behavior and – as Frozen‘s Elsa says – “Let it Go”. I need to figure out how to have patience for my children.

The Orange Rhino Book

Since I am constantly thinking about this topic, I was excited to meet Sheila McCraith and talk to her about her new book “Yell Less, Love More: How the Orange Rhino Mom Stopped Yelling at Her Kids – and How You Can Too”.  I also love her Twitter campaign asking people to use #YellLessLoveMore and post how they help keep it together.

Without fully spoiling her book – which I recommend – she brings up a few points that really resonated with me. This includes the idea of literally tracking your yelling triggers so you can hedge your repeat explosions at the gate (page 43).

The Orange Rhino’s Top Five Ways To Control Yelling

  1. You try and keep your act together in public so you don’t look like a screaming lunatic. Don’t your children deserve that same decorum at home considering they are really the audience who you care about judging you? (Page 17)
  2. It is your children’s job to push you. They are correctly pushing your limits. It is your job to keep your act together. You can only blame yourself for losing it. You can only control yourself and your own behavior. All that right there – it is exhausting. (Page 51)
  3. You feel like crap after yelling at your kids. A feeling that lingers well past their bedtime. Sometimes you yell because you had a bad day having nothing to do with them, resulting in your bad mood taking their joy and smiles away. (Page 77)
  4. It is your job to ask your kid why they are crying or behaving in a way that is driving you nuts. Maybe something is going on. Stop being angry at their behavior and find out why they are exhibiting the behavior. (Page 101)
  5. Think about your yelling like this – when someone yells at you, do you want to do what they are asking? Nope! So why would your kids want to listen to you if you are screaming at them?

What Is An Orange Rhino Mom? Does It With Patience For My Children?

My favorite quote from the book is: “Being an Orange Rhino isn’t about perfection; it’s about yelling less and loving more, one moment at a time, so that there are more loving moments in a child’s life than angry moments, so that the scale is tipped heavily toward love.” (Page 183)

Since writing the first part of this post I have adapted some new techniques in my own behavior, inspired by Sheila’s book with the hopes of increasing my patience with my children.

My Four Point System Of Stopping Bad Behavior

My daughter and I now have a four point system of how I tell her to stop a bad behavior. Four because she’s four (as she would say).

Here it is:

  1. First I ask calmly
  2. Then a little less calm
  3. Then stern with a warning that the next time I will yell
  4. Then I yell (if necessary)

I am OK with this yelling because I give her fair warning to change her behavior. I also think it is OK to occasionally yell or get upset with your children – after giving them warnings and making it very clear why you are upset – because you need to teach them they can’t do exactly what they want all the time.

Four Year Old Kids Can’t Control Themselves

The other thing I found that helps – in the case of a full blown tantrum – is the knowledge that she genuinely can’t control herself and feels scared and out of control while it is happening. Meaning: once the crazy comes out it is hard for her to reel it back.

Knowing and accepting this concept has helped me tremendously. It has enabled me to help her through outburst calmly (ME calmly) until it passes and we can move on. It also cuts the tantrum time immensely. She and I developed this technique together post-tantrum when I was trying to understand what was going on in her head.

The Wallenstein Technique (Patent-Pending)

  1. Tantrum comes.
  2. I let her revel in it for a minute and get it out.
  3. I ask if she is out of control. 99.9% of the time she has said “yes”.
  4. I sit on the floor, put her in my lap, hold her tight, and tell her I love her over and over while petting her head until she calms down – usually in less than a minute.

As I say to her, even when she’s 73, she’ll always be my baby.

Know what? It’s worked every time.

Know what else? I am her Mommy and my job is to get her through scary situations that she can’t control. When she told me a tantrum was scary and it was scary that she couldn’t control herself – it stopped me in my tracks and made me realize she needed my help, not my impatience or loud voice.

Know what else? If her answer is “no”, I have a big bottle of vodka in my cabinet….
