She Said, Shut Up and Play with Me. Now Play With Your Kids!

Play With Your Kids!

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

As an only child I always longed for someone who wanted to play with me. It didn’t help that the games of the time were I’m Telling and Double Dare – both sibling games. As they sat on my shelf collecting dust, I realized two player games were just not in my cards (cards – however I could play… sniff sniff solitaire).

I thought when I got married I could force my husband to play with me but he’s no fun. The best I get is a one-sided cutthroat game of Spit on my birthday, and only because he has to say yes.

I Had A Baby So Someone Would Play With Me

Enter the offspring!

The excitement I had when my daughter was born was insane for many reasons. Mainly because I FINALLY had someone (obligated and) willing to play with me! SHE happened to enjoy playing with me – so there!

I’ve wanted to write about playing with one’s kids for months but ironically I’ve been too busy – playing with my kids – to do it. So in honor of today being the Worldwide Day of Play, here we go.

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

It’s Hard To Stop And Play

So what have I been doing? School ended, summer began. Between our family memberships and free library passes every day was filled with a morning activity (PSA – I love the zoo. Best membership in New York, ask someone to get it for you for the holidays). Then, since my little one takes a killer nap, the “big girl” toys would come out while he slept – puzzles, beads, shmancy arts and craft projects, Magna-Tiles, anything she wanted.

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

One of my favorite discoveries of the summer was GoldieBlox (a really cool engineering set for girls). I loved sitting with my daughter and teaching her how to follow a diagram, lay out all the needed pieces, and then create the project. It was amazing to see her reaction as she completed each page making the diagram came to life. Even more remarkable – while on-line at an amusement park she pointed out a banister made out of the real life version of five of her GoldieBlox pieces.

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

But the best, best, best part was just playing with her one on one. I could go on and on about how much fun it is to have a little girl who wants to play with the toys I played with as a kid – like Lite Brite or lanyard. It’s just is one of those things us mothers smile about… while doing Chinese Staircase.

I Had Another Baby So Someone Would Play With Us

Enter boy kid.

Boy kid is almost two. My husband and I laugh that amongst a sea of dolls and a land of pink, he only has eyes for trucks, ducks, trains, planes and fish. Give the boy a truck and he’s set. If you come to our house you’ll have to play trains with him. He won’t take “no” for an answer. Just accept it.

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

I love playing with my daughter’s big girly things, I love playing with my son’s little man things, but the best is watching them play together.

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

These two creatures who came from my belly create such vivid tales I just sit in awe watching them – my son who barely speaks (yet we know exactly what he is saying) and my daughter who doesn’t stop talking. I just sit there crying happy tears (shocker). It’s the best thing on Earth. Their current obsession is Shopkins – which I didn’t get at first but now see encourage such imaginative play – I’m a huge fan.

The Mint Chip Mama - Bedtime Stories

Outdoor Play Is The Best

I would be remiss to not include my love of outdoor play. Most nice afternoons I open the door and kick my kids out of the house. I love that they get fresh air and exercise without even trying. Oh outside, how I love thee. Chalk in the spring, gardening and growing vegetables in the summer, leaf collection in the fall, spraying food coloring in the snow to create art in the winter, the possibilities are endless! With each season brings a new adventure. Piles of leaves to jump in, piles of snow at the bottom of the slide – all a recipe for instant fun! When I moved to the suburbs buying a swing set was my number one priority and I haven’t looked back since.

The Mint Chip Mama - Play With Your Kids

A gifted and talented teacher once told me the best thing a parent could do is simply foster a child’s love of whatever they’re interested in at the moment. I think of this often.

The Mint Chip Mama - Kids

Put Down Your Phone And Go Play

We are all so, so busy but I try every day – at least for a bit – to put down my phone, put horse blinders on and just play with my kids. The sad part is we run around so much with them we often forget the simplicity of just stopping and imagining all the possibilities of a cardboard box.

The Mint Chip Mama - Swings

I’ve adapted the mantra that they will never be this little again and that tomorrow they will be a bit bigger. I also think about how I felt like a million bucks when my parents sat down and played with me. But most important, I think of how RIGHT NOW it is my kid’s childhood and RIGHT NOW they are making the memories they will hopefully refer to as “the happy times” when asked by their future therapist.

The Mint Chip Mama - Bounce

I’ll Say It Again, Put Down Your Phone And Go Play With Your Kids

So in conclusion, put down your phone. GO play with your kids. Put on the sprinkler on and run through it with them. Sit on your swing set glider and see how high you can all go. Go down the slide and fall on your tush. They’ll think it’s hilarious. Build a fort. Color with them (we recently found Crayola Color Alive books. AMAZING!). Most important, kiss them a zillion times. One day they won’t call you back because they no longer think of you as the moon and stars –which they do RIGHT NOW.

Park Whiz: They Paved Paradise and Put Up A Parking App

ParkWhiz

Park Whiz: New YorkChicago – San Francisco

Facebook Twitter

Fall is coming! Fall is coming! My absolute favorite season is Fall. Especially Fall in Manhattan. My favorite beautiful city suddenly switches – almost on a dime – from a sweltering urban heat bubble to a cool, rainbow of colors.

I used to love walking around the Great Lawn just to see what the skyline looked like smiling at the lucky trees changing from green to red.

20140810 The park

Now as a suburban dweller, it’s hard to resist the short drive to do this again. The only hitch is of course parking.

The idea of parking in Manhattan is so stressful.

Where is the closest garage?

Will it cost me more to park than my mortgage?

Will the garage be full once I get there?

How do I get to where I’m going once I park my car?

I believe I have the answer for you – meet ParkWhiz! With their super easy to use App you type in where you’re going and your entry and exit time. It quickly pulls up all garages in the area with their fabulous discounted prices! But what’s even better – it tells you how long of a walk the garage is to your destination! This makes it easy to gauge if the price differences are justified by the time it saves you by proximity.

IMG_8534    IMG_8535

So you found your winner. You simply click on it and tap to pay – It’s that easy! Your spot is reserved and waiting for you, you have directions how to get to the lot and you have directions how to get to your destination. They also send you an email with links to everything you need (including a cancellation link just in case).

 IMG_7139    IMG_7378

Once you arrive at the garage, you can throw your keys ala Ferris Bueller (hopefully not) and be on your way! When you return, just show your parking confirmation in the app or email, and off you go.

IMG_7383

When the sun starts to set on your big pimpin’ city day, ParkWhiz’s App pops up with a reminder of how much time is left on your pre-paid reservation and kindly offers you directions back to your car. This means even the least city friendly, lost person can be painlessly guided back to the garage (read: your mom).

 IMG_7376    IMG_7377

So as you start making your Fall & Winter plans to see The Rockettes (OMG, Radio City parking – oy!), the tree lighting – which is December 2, 7pm –9pm (OMG, Rockefeller Center parking – oy!), a kid’s show (OMG, parking with an impatient child in the car – oy!), The Ride (OMG, Times Square parking – oy!), or Story Pirates (OMG, Hell’s Kitchen parking – oy!) ParkWhiz is for you.

App, tap, pay, park, play.

IMG_8537

Here’s a map of all the NYC garages just to confirm they’ve got your covered.

Live in Chicago or San Francisco – they’ve got a dedicated page for each of these cities too including local events and discounts. But wait – there’s more – check out their nationwide network of parking spots in cities everywhere!

Staying longer than a few days? Check out the NY, Chicago, and San Fran monthly parking maps (with promotions brightly highlighted) to easily compare prices.

Even bigger news for those of you in the Chicago area – September 9th, 2015 ParkWhiz introduced $5 flat rate parking at more than 100 of its Chicago-area parking facilities. Customers can now reserve an hour of parking for $5, two hours for $10 and 12 hours for $15.

If all of this doesn’t sound cool enough – check this out – they even had a dedicated page just for people going to Lollapalooza last week!

I love that ParkWhiz thinks about the major events going on and tries to make your life easier. Now if that isn’t different from your mother’s parking App I don’t know what is. Again, she is most likely lost in Weehawken trying to find the FDR.

Own a company where your employees need to park in a city? Check out ParkWhiz’s corporate parking program.

Sending someone into the city for a night out? How nice would it be to set up a spot for them or to include a parking gift certificate? Wait – that’s actually a really great idea…

Still got questions? Give them a call! They can be reached at: 1 (888) 472-7594 from 6am-8pm CT, 7 days a week.

Babyganics: You Are the Sunscreen of My Life, Yeah

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

These days one seems to need a PhD to navigate the baby and child bath and “beauty” product aisle. We try to fill our bellies with healthy food while making these monkeys and then we try to fill their bodies with healthy food once they’re on the outside. It seems only natural to continue using healthy products to bathe them, protect them from sun, while doing household chores, and when changing their little tushies.

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

Foaming Soap

I’ve been a fan of Babyganics since my five and a half year old daughter was in diapers (which they sell now too). It’s been fun to watch their product line grow along with her! My gateway product was their phenomenal Foaming Dish Soap. It was the only soap I used for her pacifiers and bottles. This naturally led to my obsession with their Foaming Hand Soap which of course led to my love for their Foaming Shampoo and Bath Wash. Geez, I think I need a foaming products intervention…

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

Wipes

Another favorite product is their All Purpose Surface Wipes which don’t feel gross on your hands (and I HATE wipes that feel gross – you know what I mean). While talking about hands I have to mention their individually wrapped Hand Sanitizing Wipes which have been in any bag I’ve had on my person since 2010. I always keep three with me and they take up virtually no room. Plus unlike using a wipe from a big pack (which I keep in my car), using an individually wrapped wipe makes me feel like I just ate a delicious lobster at a fancy restaurant and they gave me the wipe to clean up.

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

Sunscreen

But of course I would be remiss to not mention one of the hot button topics of the summer – the toxicity in our sunscreens (and I’m not talking about the now black sheep of the sunscreen market – the spray bottles). While on line to buy – wait for it – sunscreen (I literally couldn’t make that up), I received the Environmental Working Group’s 2015 Guide to Sunscreen and their even scarier Sunscreen Hall of Shame. After reading it I realized this was yet another product I had to stop and think about before grabbing whatever was on sale. So I looked and despite the “natural” product that I was holding, half way down the list was one of the red light ingredients. So what did I do? I put it down and walked out. Apologizing to the annoyed cashier who patiently waited as this neurotic wa-hoo checked her sunscreen ingredients against her phone.

I Should Say THE BEST Sunscreen

So what did I end up with? Babyganics Mineral Based Suncreen. Safe and effective. My daughter likes how it feels vs. some of the goopier (I was told her prior product was too goopy by her counselor) sunscreens that have a good rating and she loves the design of the bottle. She was excited when I showed it to her and told me a lot of her friends at camp have the same one so we definitely had to write her name on it. I send in the cream to camp and we use the pump spray at home in the morning. I like that one spray per body part covers her completely. SPF’d up in less than 3 minutes and ready to go. It also has the added benefit of bringing back pump hairspray bottle memories having to do with uncontrollable bangs in the mid 90’s.

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

Moisturizing Daily Lotion with Sunscreen

Building on their sunscreen franchise – Babyganics is the first company to offer a Moisturizing Daily Lotion with Sunscreen. Just like you use for yourself (hopefully!). What’s even better is a percentage of the sales go to Cookies for Kids Cancer.

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

Foaming Shampoo And Bath Wash

Babyganics is a great company who offers a wide product line of non-harmful products you can trust. If you want to start with just one I recommend the Foaming Shampoo and Bath Wash. It lasts a long time, smells nice, and is something you can feel good about using on your kids.

As we close out the summer and go towards the Fall and cold season, I suggested picking up one of their great Chest Rub‘s too. As you can tell from my prior posts, I like to be prepared. Before we know it the snow will be falling and our kids will be coughing, sigh.

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

If all of the above isn’t enough reason to try their products, they are a Long Island based company. Woot!

The Mint Chip Mama - Babyganics

Felicitous note – as I was finding these links I noticed most Babyganics products are on sale right now on Amazon! So head on over and stock up for the season!

*Giveaway*! Babyganics is generously giving away a bottle of their fantastic sunscreen to one lucky reader!

To win please comment below: What is the most creative thing you’ve done to protect your kid from the sun?

I Come From A Diggerland Down Under. America’s 1st Construction Themed Amusement Park in NJ!

Amusement parks are a place we go to see our kids have fun. If you’re a big kid like me you can often sneak some fun in for yourself too. I have to say of all the amusement parks I’ve ever been to Diggerland USA – the first construction themed amusement park in the US – was one of the most fun amusement parks I’ve ever visited. Even in the pouring rain.

IMG_6535

If you have a truck obsessed kid like I do – this is the place for you!

Remove your idea of conventional rides and enter the concept of construction vehicles as rides. Yep, that means instead of sitting in a tea cup, you sit in the driver’s seat of a backhoe. And get to drive it! I’m pretty sure I could have gone my entire life without ever driving a backhoe – something I never really put too much thought into before – but you know what? It was awesome! I was giggling like a schoolgirl the whole time. At the end I apologized to the attendant for my embarrassing behavior but he only laughed and said everyone had the same reaction.

IMG_6549   IMG_6551

Rides Galore!

But the fun just starts there – to highlight a few of my favorites, there are mini-excavators turned into amusement park games (no prizes but included with admission!); the Dig-Around – Half Merry-Go-Round, Half Excavator, all Carousel; and my favorite – the Spin Dizzy – a specially designed spinning 3 ton high, torque JCB JS220! I love that they were constructed (too meta?) with the vehicle’s cab as the ride operator’s station!

IMG_6628   IMG_6585

Mini-Land Rovers

My daughter (at 44”) was too short to drive the full scale construction vehicles (a good thing as a five year old driving a huge truck is probably a bad idea) but she was able to join me as I drove them as well as ride all the kid rides. Her absolute favorite was the Mini-Land Rovers. She got to drive – and I mean drive, not on an attached track – herself. I had vivid flashback memories of me as a kid LOVING this exact type of ride and always begging my parents to go again and again. So I let her, because you know, I’m a cool mom.

IMG_6566   IMG_6593

Happiness is – The Barrel Train

My poor son (at under 36”) who loves construction vehicles more than milk was very limited on what he could ride. However once we found the Barrel Train – pulled by a dumper truck that cruised around the park, little “driving” wheel included – he was set. For an hour.

IMG_6601   FullSizeRender (2)

The Happiest Staff On Earth

One of the other things really worth highlighting at Diggerland USA was the staff. Now, I’m an amusement park junkie and can’t think of any park whose staff ever did anything but sit there apathetically pushing a button. At Diggerland USA I said to my husband over & over again “he was so nice, he was so helpful”. I actually asked the head honcho – who was pretty amazing himself, where he found these people. He shared that most were local high school graduates, who worked here as their first job.

Good Attitudes Come From Above

It was important to the people in charge that their employees were very well trained. This meant trained not only on their specific job – but on what it means to have a job. They felt this laid the groundwork for the tools needed in life wherever their paths take them. Yep, my mouth dropped open. Amazing. He said because the company wanted to invest in them the staff genuinely liked working there. They were happy – and it paid off! 85% of the staff returned this season – which apparently is unheard of in the amusement park industry. Sounds better than your job, right?

IMG_6637

But Wait! There’s More

Besides the rides and the construction vehicles to drive there was a stunt show, a really fun gift shop, an arcade, a huge playground (ropes course, rock wall, crazy slide), and of course what park would be complete without a goat cam?!

IMG_6558

Great Location

Diggerland USA is located behind Sahara Sam’s Oasis Water Park in West Berlin, New Jersey. We visited on the second day of a little family vacation – the day before we were at Sesame Place. It was perfect. After saying good bye to Elmo we drove about thirty minutes to one of the recommended hotels in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. We had a delicious dinner at Cracker Barrel (mmmmmm!) and went to sleep nice and early. In the morning we stopped at the (Lark) Voorhees Diner for breakfast (which if you know me and how I feel about diners you can imagine how good it was that I’m even mentioning it) and arrived at Diggerland USA when they opened at 10am. While we left at noon, I could have stayed at least another two hours.

Go Even If Your Kids Aren’t Truckers

If your kids are really into trucks I highly suggest a visit. Even if your kids aren’t so into trucks I promise they will have a blast. It is so different from any park you will visit this summer. It is definitely worth the new experience! I can’t stop talking about what a nice time we all had.

Don’t forget to check out all the family friendly vacation spots we’ve researched!

Will You Still Bug Meeee, Tomorrow…Guardian Bug Repellant

Bug Repellant

The Mint Chip Mama - Guardian Bug Repellant

@GuardianRepels Facebook Twitter

I don’t like bugs. However, I won’t kill them because I’m nuts, but I don’t like them. I equally don’t like bug spray. Not the chemicals, not the feel, not the spray, not the smell, not how I – despite my best efforts – get it in my mouth EVERY time, nothing about it. In fact, generally speaking, I prefer the bug bites over the bug spray (which I usually get anyway even if I use the stinky sprays rendering my use of it moot). So when I was approached at the Momtrends Travel Event by Guardian about their plant-based, non-toxic pump-spray alternative to DEET bug repellant I was intrigued.

We All Need A Good Bug Repellant

Lucky for me I scored a bunch of samples. I threw one in my car and kept one in my downstairs bathroom right next to our patio door. As the bugs started to come out, I started to use it. I must say, I loved it. It didn’t feel gross (the technical term for how most bug sprays feel), it didn’t smell like bug spray (aka human repellent), and thanks to the pump spray vs. the aerosol can, it didn’t get in my mouth (win for The Mint Chip Mama!). Best of all – I DIDN’T GET BUG BITES!

We live next to a water basin so bugs are a-plenty over here at Camp Wallenstein. I was super happy to play with my kids in my backyard and retire for the night without scratching. Even more impressive, when we went to visit our CSA farm and saw swarms and swarms of erudite, organic artisanal vegetable loving bugs, we did a quick spray and voila! No bites. Win one for the humans!

The Mint Chip Mama - Guardian Bug Repellant

A Safe Bug Repellant Is Super Important

Currently, 80% of insect repellents on the market are (the synthetic chemical) DEET–based. Yuck. Many parents, including myself, try to avoid DEET as it is not a nice product. Last year, as a more natural alternative, TyraTech (who also makes a great natural lice/lice prevention product) began offering Guardian™ Backyard DEET-Free 4-Hour Mosquito & Tick Repellent, 4 fl. oz. Pump SprayGuardian – a safe, effective, non-toxic insect repellent that is 100% DEET-free. Guardian™ Backyard DEET-Free 4-Hour Mosquito & Tick Repellent, 4 fl. oz. Pump SprayGuardian is the first major innovation in over 60 years in the fight against mosquitos and ticks. This means it will excite two generations of bug haters in your family.

Guardian Bug Repellant Is Both

So with the summer in full swing, I want to tell you, dear readers, about Guardian as you get yourselves ready to travel about, especially to areas where insects are active. Guardian’s patented technology, using the plant-based essential oil Geraniol (an active ingredient derived from plants like geraniums and roses), is scientifically proven to perform as well or better than DEET-based products. If you dislike the strong odor or feel of DEET, or find DEET products ineffective or irritating, Guardian is a great alternative for you!

The Mint Chip Mama - Guardian Bug Repellant

Guardian currently offers two types of insect repellent, the 4-hour Backyard – comparable to 15% DEET products – and designed for activities such as backyard BBQs, trips to the playground, and time spent enjoying outdoor sporting events and the 8-hour Wilderness – which outperforms 15% DEET products – designed for extended time outdoors in heavily infested areas. Camping, fishing, kayaking, backpacking, whatever adventure awaits, Guardian Wilderness delivers repellency without compromise and won’t harm your plastics and gear.

DEET-free Guardian insect repellents are currently available on Guardian™ Backyard DEET-Free 4-Hour Mosquito & Tick Repellent, 4 fl. oz. Pump Spray""Amazon.com.

Here’s to a bug-bite free fabulous Summer!

The Mint Chip Mama - Guardian Bug Repellant

*GIVEAWAY*

One lucky reader will win a DEET-Free Guardian Insect Repellent Pack that includes: A full size (4oz) & travel size (1oz) Guardian Backyard A full size (4oz) & travel size (1oz) Guardian Wilderness To win – please post in the comment section below: What’s the most creative way you’ve tried to keep mosquitoes out of your yard? The Mint Chip Mama’s Inside Scoops On Sesame Place!

IMG_6504

If you live on the East Coast, I’m guessing at some point in your life you have been – or are planning to go – to Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA.

Sesame Place Was One of My Favorites As A Kid

Sesame Place was my absolute favorite amusement park as a kid so I could not wait to take my own children. It’s a great park because you have the characters for the little kids and the rides for the big kids. It’s just a happy place to visit and even with going back year after year it just gets better.

IMG_6391

Right on the tails of our third trip (last Friday – my strategy is always go on a weekday!) I offer up my tried & true tips.

Planning in advance

If you can’t tell by now, I’m a planner. I highly suggest booking your tickets, meal reservation, and anything else you want (locker, parking, etc) at least 24 hours in advance. The meals lock out that day so be sure to book it in advance. The park is a bit bigger than Adventureland and very manageable in one day.

Weather is always the wild card. Remember to check the weather in Langhorne, not where you live (duh) because it could be completely different.

Speaking of weather, in the three times we visited we had pouring rain, a hot summer day, and a 70% chance of rain which turned out perfect (woot!). Have no fear, if it does start raining, you can score a Sunny Day ticket to go back!

July 24 2012 064Our most recent visit was my favorite because the weather was perfect and I could go on the rides (last time I was preggers)! Interestingly enough I learned if you have a little cookie in your monster you can purchase a Single Day Admission Ticket at 50% off the front gate price (the day of your visit at Guest Relations) since your ride options are limited. In other words you can be the designated stuff holder without paying full price!

Arrival

You’ve driven four PAW Patrol’s (the way my family measures time) and you arrive.

I suggest getting there at 9:45am (they open at 10am). Pay your $17 parking fee, drive as far to the right as you can, and park. You will be very close to the park entrance. This is helpful so you can go back and forth to your car if needed (we kept all water ride supplies in there). As you wait for the park to open you can take your obligatory family photo under the “Sesame Place” arch d’triumph.

IMG_6367

Also take a moment to enjoy the Hollywood Boulevard-ish Sesame Street character handprints and Edward Scissorhands-Esque foliage characters out front!

As you approach the entrance, there are ticket kiosks to the left but if you printed out your tickets at home (highly recommended) you can proceed to the entry and get scanned through. If you encounter any issues the guest service booth is located right there and the line goes fast.

Ride Strategy

At first glance you will see the biggest attraction, the Vapor Trail roller coaster. Head to that first as it’s popularity comes with a line to match. We did dry rides first, lunch, changed into our suits (secretly digesting along the way. Ah ah ah), water rides, and a final dry ride “spin cycle”.

IMG_6673

Character Encounters

There are several ways to meet the Sesame Street characters – around the park (usually with a line), during a character meal, a VIP Meet & Greet, or the parade.

Shouting out a HUGE endorsement to the character meal – Lunch with Elmo & Friends – the highlight of our trip three times in a row. BOOK IT IN ADVANCE. You may be able to get 10% off as a AAA member. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t. Worth a try. Kids under 2 eat free but include them in your reservation. They offer breakfast and dinner as well.

IMG_6671

Lunch with Elmo & Friends

I love Lunch with Elmo & Friends – it’s a great way to break up your day, refuel, and get some great photos. The characters walk around, sit at your table and pose with you. They also put on a show culminating in a big old dance party. Don’t forget to take home the straw cup they serve your kids. It’s the perfect (free) souvenir!

IMG_6672

Water Rides

I haven’t been on legit water rides since college. Know what? I loved them as much as I remembered. The highlight was – while mid-tunnel and sparked by the pin holes in the Sesame Streak – a flash back memory of that very ride as a kid. Suddenly I wasn’t a wife and mother but a teen tour kid enjoying my favorite ride. I had totally forgotten about it. When my daughter asked if we could go on again I said “YES” with the gusto of younger me instead of 37 year old me dodging my husband and 20m old son who desperately wanted to go home.

Most water rides offer single or double tubes. At 43″ my daughter was able to ride alone. Not gonna lie, on our second turn when she asked to go solo I shed a small tear. Sunrise sunset.

As a big amphibious shoe fan I recommend wearing a pair of water shoes, Tevas, or Keens all day. I also like long sleeve rash guards. Also worth mentioning – there are complimentary life vests for babies & kids so no need to bring your own.

One of the coolest rides (and scariest for me because of the size & difficulty keeping an eye on my kid) was The Count’s Splash Castle. It was “awesome” and I’m sure my daughter could have spent another two hours there. I owed her a second dessert for pointing out the giant bucket was about to pour on my head as we exited.

Shows

If your visit coincides with very hot weather or a child too small or afraid of rides, be sure to check out the shows – some offering air conditioning along with entertainment!

100_2972

Parade

The daily Neighborhood Birthday Party Parade is best seen at the intersection of the black & blue streets near the dry ride entrance. On a busy day it might be worth sending someone to stake out a good spot. Not totally necessary but a nice break from your family the rides. (I won’t tell your husband). People start lining up thirty minutes prior. Be sure to check your map or app for the day’s schedule.

IMG_6674

We were lucky enough to attend a VIP Character Meet & Greet (30 minutes before the parade) this time. Afterwards, upon my husband’s suggestion, we sat down on a bench in the shade at the beginning of the route (in front of the lockers). It wasn’t the best viewing point but it was good enough and got us back on the water rides before the lines formed again.

IMG_6659

The parade was cute and a good “grand finale”/exit strategy. If you live in the NYC area this strategy could get you home by dinner.

Bye Bye

You made it! If you’re expecting a sleep & transfer situation, I suggest a thorough delousing (think sun + sweat + ice cream in hair) before getting in the car. Bring a wash cloth and pajamas. I also brought a spray bottle filled with Mustela No Rinse Cleanser. Mustela. Spray, wash, pajama, go. They’ll be out before you leave the parking lot.

Bring lounge pants.

Your welcome.

Don’t forget to check out all the family friendly vacation spots we’ve researched!

Schooool’s Out For Summer! My Baby Is Growing Up So Fast – Kindergarten Here We Come!

This is a repost from my June 18, 2015 Huffington Post Parent piece titled: Schooooool’s Out for Summer! (Kindergarten Here We Come!).

Where Does the Time Go?

My daughter – my first born, the child who made me a Mommy – is graduating Pre-K on Friday. I can’t believe the journey – that started with counting the seconds down until the day after Labor Day so I could press redial for two and a half hours just to get a school’s application – is over.

The Mint Chip Mama - kindergarten here we come

My daughter’s first day of school ever, Manhattan.

Manhattan Pre-School Admissions Process

Preschool – in Manhattan – is a daunting topic. Everything you heard is true. It is cutthroat. You could have the most fantastic kid on Earth who speaks seventeen languages fluently but if their birthday is after February 1st, they are a girl, or siblings took all open spots before they were offered to the world – you’re screwed.

Schools know who they “can” accept before you (not the inner circle) even have a fighting chance. But of course any of these wild cards won’t be shared with you until you win the radio contest and get through to the “DJ”. Forget the begging. No application for you.

Yep, I said application. Along with an application fee, interview, and child observation.

I’m laughing that I drank this Huffington Post Parent.

I Drank The Kool-Aid

We were lucky enough to make the cut and be accepted into one of the best nursery schools in Manhattan (according to the The Manhattan Directory of Private Nursery Schools, 7th Edition, the book everyone says you must get) for a “threes program”. Of course, this was followed by our (somewhat surprising) move to suburbia five months later. So, you know all of that was worth it…

On To The Suburbs And A Total 180 Change

Our suburban school – where I am a proud alum – had a much more reasonable application process. If they had a spot, and your kid had a pulse, acceptance was guaranteed.

So as I sit in my house, after parking my SUV in my driveway, on my daughter’s penultimate day of preschool, I reflect. Crying and singing “Forever Young”. [Please note: both Rod Stewart’s version – which may also make you think of Chances Are – and your prom song fit in perfectly here.]

Did Any Of It Matter?

Did it matter what “philosophy” the school followed?

Do You think the kids played enough?

Can you say the kids learned enough?

Is It possible for your child to recite sonnets in a foreign language?

Were your child’s teachers soft enough or hard enough?

Was the exmissions process up to your standards getting your child one step closer to Harvard?

Has your child’s multicultural experiences aligned with today’s diverse society?

Who the heck knows?

Nope. It Does Not Matter

What I do know is today, the four graduating classes of four and five year old kids did one hell of a chicken dance at the graduation party. They also played a game of red light green light which was second to none.

They are kids!

No matter where one lives, they are little kids.

They like sticks and balls and music when it stops so they have to freeze.

We get so caught up in what we think they need we forget they are happy running in a circle and falling down.

The Kid Is The Important Thing

My daughter is a good kid. She would have been fine no matter what school she attended and what zip code it was in (sadly not 90210). Her thirst for knowledge impresses me every day. What I love about her is she is kind, sensitive, loving, friendly, inclusive, and imaginative. She thinks of her friends if she sees a color they like and could play “family” with them for hours. Her interests include gardening, yoga and swimming. She likes holding her brother’s hand so he feels safe. She likes picking out her Grandma’s favorite flowers meticulously when we are in a rush (*exhale*).

We named a star for her as a graduation present. She is going to think this is the coolest thing in the world because on Friday nights, she likes to lie on a blanket in our backyard and look at the stars. Thank you $5 Groupon.

The Mint Chip Mama - kindergarten here we come

Houston, we have a problem.

She Is Just Simply, A Kid.

I do not know which school fostered which parts of her. I do know each school had some pretty fantastic attributes – having nothing to do with price, location, or status.

Kindergarten Here We Come

As kindergarten looms, I think of how I’ve grown as a parent too. Now a parent of two. My life has changed so much in the last three years. It makes me sad to think it is the end of knowing her classmates and their parents well. The end of getting an extra hug at the classroom door because she “loves me so much”. The end of my waiting a few seconds too long to watch her go from my sweet girl to one of the kids in the class running around, engrossed in the day’s activity or entering a pretend universe crafted with amazing detail.

Sigh.

Graduation will come and go. Camp will start and kindergarten will be curling its finger. I have no doubt she will do well. I have no doubt she will bounce onto the bus (!) like a little big shot on that first day. For that matter – I have no doubt I will be a sniveling mess once the bus pulls away…

Of course it is emotional. It is emotional for all of us. I realized this morning that today is the day six years ago we found out we were pregnant with this now – almost pre-kindergarten graduate. Six years.

The Mint Chip Mama - kindergarten here we come

The graduate & her proud Mama, Long Island.

Blink blink.

Slow down time. Slow down.

In other news, oh my gosh! What are we going to do with all the money we’re saving on preschool!? Parrrrtay!

The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

Big Apple Circus presents METAMORPHOSIS

Cunningham Park, Fresh Meadows, Queens

The Mint Chip Mama: The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

It’s Like I Kind Of Joined The Circus

As they say – the more things change the more they stay the same. For me seeing Big Apple Circus’ METAMORPHOSIS –  for the second time this year – was equally enjoyable. In fact more so than at Lincoln Center! If the Big Apple Circus comes to Queens, I’m coming to Queens!

The Mint Chip Mama: The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

There are a few reasons for this.

1. I knew the show so I knew the really cool parts to watch for and not miss. Plus I knew where Francesco the Clown hung out before the performance started!

The Mint Chip Mama: The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

2. My son was older so he was even more into it – if that is possible since he was MESMERIZED last time as well.

The Mint Chip Mama: The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

3. My daughter knew what to expect and was really excited to see her favorite acts again. And in a last minute upset shocked us all by asking for popcorn instead of cotton candy. All she talked about once she knew we were going was the cotton candy. I’m still in shock.

The Mint Chip Mama: The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

4. Queens! Shorter drive; free to park (a huge shout out to the many, many, many “circus parking” signs with arrows plastered from the highway exit to the parking lot); easier to get there; less traffic; and you could even make a day of it in beautiful Cunningham Park if it suited your fancy!

5. We were lucky enough to see one of the first shows featuring the new ringmaster Nelson Lugo – who is filling in for longtime favorite John Kennedy Kane as he recovers. This New York City based actor/magician – with over 20 years performing experience – brought new energy to the show. Plus I like this line from his bio “He is a very happy, excited, and tired guy”. I can relate!

The Mint Chip Mama: The Big Apple Circus Comes to Queens!

Vladimir and Olga Smirnov

I will say this – Vladimir and Olga Smirnov still stole the show in my opinion. Since I knew their act going in I thought I could catch a “tell” or anything that would give me a clue how they change costumes so quickly. But despite my dead-on-no-blinking stare, I was completely stumped. You’d like to think with the death defying trapeze, animal tricks, spaceships and flying humans, quick costume changes would not be the most jaw dropping act but by George, HOW DO THEY DO IT!!!? Seriously, it was so cool. No really, how do they do it? I promise I won’t tell anyone!

Fun Findings at The 2015 New York Baby Show!

Hello from the left, right under the balloon!

One of the things I miss about living in Manhattan is the great events I used to go to. So when Momtrends invited me to their lounge (read pampering and a birdseye view) at The 2015 New York Baby Show I couldn’t drive into the city fast enough. In tow was my favorite gal because – as we know – the true critic of cool is a precocious child.

2015 New York Baby Show Favorite Finds

I present to you my favorite finds. Some are old favorites, some are new products that got me excited (which after five years in this parenting game is becoming more and more of a challenge!). Click on the links for more information. Enjoy!

Glam Squad

As always, Glam Squad did not disappoint. Besides being completely obsessed with their great hair ties and headbands, I treated myself to a hair styling and new trendy manicure! Glam Squad can do this for you too, in the comfort of your own home. Yep, if you live in NYC, LA, or Miami they will come right to you for hair, nails and make-up. How fantastic is that?

Maven

The next impressive brand was Maven. Do you know how you don’t take care of yourself because for you to go to the doctor it is a whole procedure (pun intended). Well Maven brings the doctor to you – via their Maven Clinic app. You pick one of their highly qualified providers, book your face-to-face video appointment, pay the clearly stated fee, and away you go! No more time suck in a doctor’s waiting room. Brilliant.

Babyganics

If you are like me, cleaning your clothes and cleaning your kids take up a good portion of your time. The search is always on making sure the products I use are non-toxic and healthy for my kids.  I was happy to see one of my favorite brands – Babyganics on Saturday. I love their new labels. They make me happy. Everything of theirs that I’ve tried over the years I’ve loved. Plus it is a brand that you can trust so you don’t have to put too much effort into trying a new product. Just grab and go. Extra points for being Long Island based!

Eco Nuts

One of the coolest companies I found was Eco Nuts. I’m still baffled by the science behind their Eco Nuts “As Seen on Shark Tank” Soap 100 Loads Soap Nuts. These little Himalayan nuts naturally contain soap. You throw them in your washer and the soap cleans your clothes! What? I know. Check out their site for more info.

The Mint Chip Mama - 2015 New York Baby Show Eco Nuts

Mabels Labels

When talking about kids and clothes, especially at this pre-camp time of year, labels always come up. Happy as always to give a shout out to my friends at Mabel’s Labels. Their Limited Edition Camp Label Pack has everything your little one needs to ensure what you put on the bus comes off the bus. As someone who never found things with her name properly spelled as a child I get a thrill every time they give me labels. No ghetto sharpie stac“E”y drawn in here!

Moms Pump Here

Prior to mashed baby food and toddler food, there is milk. I want to highlight a new app I’m very excited about called Moms Pump Here. It locates the nearest place for you to nurse. We have all had that challenge of a baby crying, engorgement, and no clue where to sit that is both private and clean. Enter Moms Pump Here. Consider it a GPS for your boobs. Let’s help them grow their database in the name of liquid gold! If you know of a place to share click here. Brilliant!

Mum-Mum

Both of my children love Mum-Mum crackers. They dissolve very quickly so parents don’t have to worry about big pieces and small mouths. Check out their new Mum-Mum Snax for school aged kids. They are both clearly marked as peanut free and gluten free.

The Mint Chip Mama - Mum Mum

Kiddylicious

Kiddylicious snacks were new to me. My 19 month old son has gobbled up their Fruit Crispies like crazy! I loved their packaging and that their snacks are fruit filled and healthy.

Green Sprouts

I have been looking to get some new green sprouts Garden Sandwich and Snack Bag, Sage Worm, 3 Months, 2-Countreusable snack bags for my son’s incessant snack habit (read: I can’t afford to keep buying prepackaged bags of his choice du jour). I loved these Green Sprouts Snack Bags. Exactly what I was looking for and beyond cute patterns.

The Mint Chip Mama - Reusable Bags

Mixed Pears

Another new item to me was the BiteSizers food scissor. With their little click-to-seal cover you can throw a pair in your bag and be ready to show a slice of pizza at a birthday party who’s boss. For me, the test was cutting a Clementine. I’m psyched to report the scissor opened wide enough to snip that baby in half. Plus there is a blade so you can cut vertically. Love!

The Mint Chip Mama - BiteSizers Scissors

My Carry Potty

The adorable My Carry Potty – available in a bee, cow and ladybug pattern – was so cute. Such a great idea too. Who hasn’t been stuck on the go with a kid who needed to go right NOW. In addition to being leak and odor proof with a watertight seal, it also offers a great carry handle so your kid will be excited.

The Mint Chip Mama - My Carry Potty

Tidy Tots Cloth Diapers

I have been thinking of introducing Tidy Tots cloth diapers into our world. My son naps on a good schedule at home and I can usually predict what I’ll find when I change him. Because of this I thought I could do a little green with this approach. I was so excited the first booth I came to was Tidy Tots Diapers! It was like they read my mind. There is so much research behind this diaper it is impressive. Plus they have a tie dye pattern, so you know me, sold!

The Mint Chip Mama - 2015 New York Baby Show

NoseFrida

was so happy to see one of my absolute favorite products – NoseFrida. If you don’t know of this, or haven’t been given it as a gift by moi allow me to explain. This delightful product has a tube that goes in your baby’s nostril which you suck the snot out of using the other side. There is a filter, don’t worry. I cannot tell you how many times we used this allowing my daughter to breathe easier. Amazing Amazing Amazing. A+++++.

The Mint Chip Mama - NoseFrida

There was also a new intriguing product in the nasal aspiration field coming out in July – The Baby Health Care Baby Smile Nasal Aspirator. I am very curious to try it!

Sit ‘n’ Stroll

Sometimes I sit and dream about traveling to a (enter any adjective here) place with my kids. There are so many parts involved with something like this starting with safe travel. I loved the Sit ‘n’ Stroll Zoomer which converts any car seat into a Lilly Gold The Sit ‘n’ Stroll, Beverly Hills Sit ‘n’ Stroll! When the day comes making this dream a reality I look forward to zipping my kids through the airport with this. I also love the idea of having my Britax car seats with me so I know they are both clean and the best.

No Mo Nausea Band

Another super cool product new to me was the No Mo Nausea Band – the first acupressure and aromatherapy wrist band out there. While it looks very similar to an acupressure bracelet you’ve seen before, once you get closer you will smell the delicious peppermint oil emanating from the band naturally decreasing nausea and vomiting for adults and kids. Loved it. It immediately calmed me down. Maybe it would help with tantrums…theirs or mine.

The Mint Chip Mama - Nomo Nausea

Primary

Clothes are a basic item we all need for our kids. It is so nice when there is a line that one can mix and match and everything goes so little thought is needed. Primary is exactly this. As they say “Brilliant basics for under $25”. Their website is clean and easy offering sizes 0 – 10. Basics mean you can fall in love with one of their styles and it will be there throughout the size run. Also a cute idea for a longitudinal picture montage!

Hatch Things

Being out and about necessitates a good bag. Not to mention one that won’t make your stroller topple over. Hatch Things was created with exactly this in mind. That’s what you get when you add a RISD degree and a new mom together! Plus it folds into itself – which I love – and has multiple connection options. I like options.

Canon

Finally, with these little people growing up so fast it is imperative one has a great camera to snap all those fleeting moments. Canon, one of my favorite camera brands, was there with a fantastic product that’s easy to use. I still remember the excitement ordering my first digital camera from them in 2003!

The Mint Chip Mama - Canon

Nanny League

I would be remiss without a shout out to the lovely ladies of The Nanny League who kept my daughter entertained so I could do my initial lap around the show solo.  The Nanny League is an elite placement agency that matches high-profile families with professional, college educated nannies.

‘Til next year 2015 New York Baby Show!

I hope you too have found some interesting things living vicariously through my experience at The 2015 New York Baby Show. If you are interested in any of the brands above reach out to me. I have several coupon codes I’d love to share!
