Family Friendly Israel Accommodations For The Most Magical Trip

18 months ago (natch) my family and I spent the most incredible two weeks exploring every part of Israel. We traveled from the North to the South and from the East to the West. After planning a huge Bat Mitzvah in New York, and this trip three days later, I was completely burnt out when we returned. Finally, I started writing a blog post about our experience and couldn’t stop because everything about this trip was just – perfect. I was overcome with the beauty of the country and this once-in-a-lifetime extraordinary adventure we experienced. Not surprisingly, the one blog post morphed into seven.
All seven were completed and I started publishing them at the end of September 2023. I posted my second one on October 6th, 2023. The next day Israel was brutally attacked. Much like all Jews across the world my heart broke and my tears couldn’t, wouldn’t, and haven’t stopped. It no longer felt appropriate to post about our perfect trip. Therefore, I waited hoping things would end quickly.
Sadly, that was (and is) not the case. With October 7th’s anniversary approaching I’ve been thinking about our trip a lot. I’ve been thinking about how I asked my husband at the midpoint of our trip – in Tel Aviv – if he felt unsafe for one moment of our journey. He said no and as a first-time visitor, he was happy the media hype was not the reality.
Unfortunately, that narrative changed when this magical country was attacked only months later. I want to believe the hostages will come home safely. Until that happens, in the name of honoring those who haven’t come home yet and those who won’t return, I’m releasing these posts leading up to the first anniversary. I want to believe peaceful Israelis “will dance again“. Additionally, I want to believe families like ours will be able to take a trip like this again.
Please read these posts with that in your heart. Please also click on the links to the experiences and vendors and follow their social media accounts. My goal is creating a list for you of the best Israel has to offer so it’s there when you’re ready.
As you can imagine tourism has plummeted since the attacks. Many of these incredible businesses have suffered not only personally but professionally. They need all the help and support they can get. Read about them, help them (if you’re so inclined), and most importantly – visit them in person when you can. With so many kind, amazing volunteers heading over right now my hope is they’ll have time to take a cooking class, visit the dolphins, or experience the magic of Dig For A Day.

Family Friendly Israel Accommodations

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Israel Accommodations Abraham Tel Aviv

Our ideal accommodation – no matter where we go – includes a central location and a family friendly vibe. As active New Yorkers we walk and explore from breakfast to bedtime. With that said, we don’t spend a lot of time in the hotel so quite simply fancy is wasted on us. Additionally, as a family of five it’s often hard to find any accommodation that can fit all of us into one room – so we always aim for fun vs. formal. Thus, we don’t splurge on lodging. The family friendly Israel accommodations we found with Abraham as well as in the Northern and Central Regions of Israel were nothing but perfection.

And away we go…

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Jerusalem

Abraham Jerusalem

I don’t think we could’ve found a more perfect family friendly Israel accommodation in Jerusalem than Abraham Jerusalem. Since the moment I started researching Israel, I fell in love with Abraham’s website and vibe. Even better, upon arrival we were welcomed by fun colors and happiness bringing me back to my backpacking youth.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Jerusalem

Their large family room with bunk beds plus their game room and roof deck made it even better. Additionally, Abraham offers classes and events throughout your stay. Not to mention a communal area where you can play games, chat with fellow travelers, and grab a beer.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Jerusalem

I loved this hotel, its location, its delicious complementary breakfast, its staff, and literally everything about it. In fact, I was so sad to leave. The only solace was we were staying at her sister properties in Eilat and Tel Aviv so I knew there were more cool things to come (spoiler alert: I was not disappointed).

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Israel Accommodations Silent Arrow Desert Lodge

Silent Arrow Glamping In Mitzpe Ramon

We headed south from Jerusalem to Central Israel. Since we love unique accommodations, we were excited to stay at Silent Arrow Desert Lodge in Mitze Ramon. This glamping desert lodge was quite the experience! As cold as it was they provided warm blankets and a toasty warm tent atmosphere distracting you from the fact that they don’t have heat or electricity. If fact, it made it so much cooler (no pun intended!). While our stay was quick I could see how enjoyable it would be to spend a leisurely afternoon in one of their communal areas. I definitely loved the relaxed vibe and found it to be a perfect family friendly accommodation.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Eilat

Abraham Eilat

We continued our Israeli journey by heading south to Eilat where we had the honor of staying at Abraham Eilat. This gorgeous, brand new, colorful, bright family friendly Israel accommodation was incredible. Adding in their game room, gorgeous pool, and roof top view made this hotel our trip favorite. Not only was our spacious family room with bunk beds perfect, but the decor was like nothing I’ve ever seen before. The entire property was filled with murals, sculptures, unique seating options, and lots of outdoor and after dark accountments.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Eilat

Unfortunately, this was also a quick stay and we had to leave early the next morning. Since we checked out before their complimentary breakfast began Abraham Eilat arranged for to-go bags for us. Well… let me tell you, the bags that greeted us were incredible. Their breakfast sandwiches were at the top of our favorite Israel food list and we kept laughing because we couldn’t figure out why they were so good! We absolutely loved Abraham Eilat and highly recommend it.

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Israel Accommodations Abraham Tel Aviv

Abraham Tel Aviv

After our excursion south, we headed up to Tel Aviv for the second week of our trip. With two Abraham properties behind us we knew our third and last one – Abraham Tel Aviv – would be another perfect family friendly Israel accommodation. Not only were we correct but this room was a duplex! This family room had bunk beds downstairs and a queen size bed upstairs granting us our first moment of very welcomed privacy in over a week (thank you Abraham Tel Aviv)!

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Israel Accommodations Abraham Tel Aviv

Once again this Abraham property was perfect. With it’s fantastic location, spacious rooms, excellent common area, delicious food, and gorgeous roof deck garden it couldn’t be beat. Add in billiards, foosball, games galore, and murals everywhere to make you smile. I guarantee you couldn’t find a better family friendly Tel Aviv accommodation anywhere in the city.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Tel Aviv

Finally, if you’re blending business with pleasure they have a bright inviting common area with lots of places to sit and work while your kids entertain themselves with swinging chairs and games.

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Israel Accommodations

Hotel? Lodge? Hostel? What’s In A Name?

Abraham fancies themselves a hostel but to me they were just a great hotel. I don’t know where the line is and I don’t care. They were dream family friendly Israel accommodations! With that said, they weren’t fancy hotels, their lobbies weren’t luxurious, but their entire spaces were filled with smiling people eager to chat with a fellow travelers and swap stories.

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Israel Accommodations

Plus each property was clean, centrally located, offered tons of tours (some free!), weekly classes, special events, a fun atmosphere, and had large family rooms. I not only loved all three Abrahams but missed their happy staff and friendly vibe when we left. As an avid backpacker for years in my “youth” this was the perfect return to that feeling making this trip extra special. I hope one day to return to Abraham Jerusalem, Abraham Eilat and Abraham Tel Aviv. I can’t recommend them enough.

The Mint Chip Mama - Maim Haim Tzvat

Maim Haim Suites

From Tel Aviv we drove up North to Tzvat, the Galilee, and the Golan Heights. Our guide recommended the Maim Haim Suites Tzvat and it was the perfect hotel for our needs. The hotel was very pretty and located in walking distance to everything in Tzvat – including the supermarket to buy snacks. We loved the flexibility of the modest common room to unwind at the end of the day and the generous size of their family room. We also liked the ability to keep breakfast in the fridge so we could eat quickly and be on our way.

North Israel Region For Families

The Mint Chip Mama - Nimrod Fortress

Our trip goal was seeing this whole beautiful country from the very top – Kibbutz Misgav-Am to the very bottom – Eilat. I’m so happy to say that we succeeded! We should get a gold star!

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families

Our North Israel tour began in Tel Aviv when our private tour guide and driver Ari Singer picked us up at our hotel. We worked together on an itinerary prior to our trip and hit all the places on the list. He even pointed out the northern most tip of Route 90 – the longest road in Israel – after pointing out the southern most post to us a few days prior in Eilat.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Bental

And away we go…

The Mint Chip Mama - Caesarea

Caesarea

We started in Caesarea which I remembered so vividly from my last trip. The ruined Caesarea looked like my memory but Ari really brought the story and importance of this site to life. I loved walking around this beautiful seaside site once again.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families

My kids loved seeing the “bathroom” ruin and stopped to pose on the rocks where their ancestors powdered their noses.

The Mint Chip Mama - I Love Zefat Sign

Safed/Tzvat/Zefat

We continued up to Tzvat – one of the most magical places I’ve ever visited. I remember so vividly the feeling of the city two decades ago and could not wait to go back. With that said, there is something very special in the air, in fact Tzvat has been considered a mystical place for centuries and its easy to see why.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Leon Gallery Tzvat

Tzvat is an artist colony filled with unique hand-crafted stores and people who want to share their love and stories. It was as special as I remembered with the addition of so much more. I loved returning to two of my favorite stores – Leon Gallery and Safed Candles – and the incredible Ari Synagogue.

The Mint Chip Mama - Safed Candles

At night Tzvat becomes even more beautiful and the cobble stone streets are illuminated to another level of spirituality. We loved walking around and feeling the energy of the city after dark.

The Mint Chip Mama - Ari Synagogue

Tzvat was a great place to stay as a home base for exploring North Israel and the Golan Heights. Plus, it’s so special there I was happy to return each night and breathe in the feeling one more time. You must visit this beautiful city at least once in your lifetime, promise me you’ll go!

The Mint Chip Mama - Route 90 Israel

Touring North Israel

There is so much to see in North Israel. Additionally, there is so much interesting history, current conflicts, and excitement around every road. Speaking of roads, it’s also where route 90 begins, marked by a sign at the very top of the country. It was the perfect stop for a photo nerd like myself!

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Banias Waterfall

Hermon Stream Nature Reserve and Banias Waterfall Hike

I remembered the gorgeous Banias Waterfall hike in the Hermon Stream Nature Reserve and couldn’t wait to return with my family. This was a decent hike with lots of elevation and beautiful views. It was not only fun to see the mountains and flowers, but all the different indigenous fruit tress – olive, pomegranate, etc along the way. This is a famous hike, and it’s easy to see why, it is perfect!

The Mint Chip Mama - Misgav Am

Misgav Am Kibbutz

We traveled up north to the very tip of Israel and visited the northern most kibbutz, Misgav Am. From here you can see Lebanon, it’s literally right across the street. The barrier between the two countries is quite apparent and highlighted with barbed wire and security measures. But also, it’s only a stone’s throw away which was very intense. This was the first time our kids really understood the geography of the Middle East and how scary it is to look out the window and see your enemy.

Ari arranged for us to meet an original Kibbutznik (someone who lives on the Kibbutz) to teach us about Misgav Am’s history. It was fascinating to hear a first-person perspective of what it’s like to live there especially through the years of unrest between Israel and Lebanon. But like many Israeli’s living on the front lines, he was happy and proud to be there.

The Mint Chip Mama - Banias Nature Reserve

The Galilee and Golan Heights

We really enjoyed driving through North Israel’s Galilee and Golan Heights regions. We loved having a private guide so we could quickly stop at important sites and then move on to the next one. This allowed us to fit everything in that we wanted to see.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Nimrod Fortress

Nimrod Fortress

The incredibly well-preserved Nimrod Fortress sits atop Mount Hermon and overlooks the Golan Heights. The view is incredible and there are lots of secret corridors to interest kids. As an added bonus, it’s a very short walk from the parking lot making it a great place to make a quick stop.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Bental

Mt Avital – Mt Bental Nature Reserve

This beautiful lookout is actually two craters formed from a single (now dormant) volcano. It not only offers stunning views but quirky public art sculptures. We loved learning the historical significance of this spot as well as taking fun pictures of their multi directional sign, former bunkers, and art. Standing here you get another scary dose of North Israel geography as you stare right into Syria. It was a great place to make a quick stop.

The Mint Chip Mama - Keshet Cave

Keshet Cave

The naturally formed Keshet Cave – a narrow rock arch in the Western Galilee – is a beautiful, peaceful site. Keshet Cave gets it’s name from the collapsed karst cave that once stood there and is now a picturesque Northern Israeli observation point. You can hike there or better yet off road directly to it for a quick photo op!

The Mint Chip Mama - Rosh Hanikra

Rosh HaNikra

Rosh HaNikra was one of my favorite sites from my first Israel trip. Its uniqueness stood out and I couldn’t wait to return with my family once again. Rosh HaNikra is located in the most northwest corner of Israel. It’s the only place in Israel where the sea meets the mountains creating a beautiful, natural, unique landscape.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Rosh Hanikra

I loved the view of the sea from the entrance, I loved the cable car you take to and from the site, and I loved the natural rock formations. But even more – I loved the clear, gorgeous aqua colored water in the grottos which I remembered for twenty years!

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Rosh Hanikra

However, I didn’t remember the super interesting history of the train tunnels or how it used to offer a route from Jerusalem to Beirut! Rosh HaNikra was just as perfect as in my memories and I got the same thrill visiting it again.

The Mint Chip Mama - Haifa and Baha’i Gardens Israel

Haifa

While we did not have a lot of time to experience Haifa, we did a quick driving tour on our way down south to the airport. We peeked through the bars of the Baha’i Gardens, saw the bay, and got a feel for the third largest city in Israel.

The Mint Chip Mama - North Israel For Families Mt. Bental

The Matmon Israel Parks Pass

Most historic sites throughout the country are located in national parks with entry fees. After much research I found the National Parks and Nature Reserve’s Israel Pass. Funny enough, the one year unlimited Matmon pass turned out to be the most cost effective option for our family of five despite only being in Israel for two weeks! You can buy the pass online or onsite at some Israeli hotels. I opted to purchase it in advance which gave me a QR code. This granted us immediate access to all parks on our itinerary upon arrival. I liked buying this unlimited access pass because it took the pressure off debating if the entry fee was worth it for a quick stop.

The Mint Chip Mama - GalilEat

Food and Accommodations In The North Israel Region

We had great luck with food and accommodations on this short 48-hour adventure. Additionally, enjoyed our meals at Brisket and Lahuhe Original Yemenite Food Bar. We also LOVED our cooking class and dinner at GalilEat and staying at Maim Haim Suites Tzvat.

Beloved Family Friendly Tel Aviv

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Tel Aviv Israel

Tel Aviv is a vibe. Tel Aviv is the ice cream scoop on top of the cone of Israel. It’s fun, colorful, cool, and ready to party.

The Mint Chip Mama - Alma Beach Tel Aviv

It’s a city made for sitting and absorbing and exactly as I remembered – cosmopolitan, gorgeous, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and looking for a good time. It’s also an interesting juxtaposition to Jerusalem – especially if you’re in each city for a Shabbat!

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Tel Aviv Israel Abraham

We arrived in Tel Aviv in the middle of the night from Eilat and checked into Abraham Tel Aviv. We were elated to find a duplex family room with bunk beds! What a way to start our family friendly Tel Aviv weekend! The next two days consisted of fun tours, a very special family reunion, the most delicious food, and creating souvenirs to bring home.

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Tel Aviv Israel

And away we go…

The Mint Chip Mama - Grafitiyul Florentine Israel

Grafitiyul

As an avid street art and graffiti chaser, Tel Aviv was like the mother ship. During the 2020 “time of zooms,” I watched a graffiti walking tour of Tel Aviv and immediately fell in love with the company Grafitiyul. Naturally, I reached out to them and said the moment we get to Tel Aviv (in three years) I want to take their tour. I couldn’t believe this moment was about to unfold.

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Tel Aviv Israel Florentine

We arrived at our Tel Aviv Graffiti Tour and Workshop rearing to go! We walked around the Florentine neighborhood absorbing the murals, learning secret artist nods and stories, and ended up back at the Grafitiyul studio to create some graffiti art of our own! But wait – it gets even better.

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Tel Aviv Israel Grafitiyul

Their work space is exactly what you’d imagine a graffiti studio to look like with muraled walls and shelves of record albums. However, she revealed the record albums were broken and Grifitiyul recycles them into canvases for their workshop guests! We were making art by reusing art… my mind exploded. Our tour guide told us to pick a record, some stencils, a few colors from their rainbow of spray paint cans, and go to town. It was a dream come true! Our creations looked amazing, dried quickly, and we exited the studio with the coolest, most unique Tel Aviv souvenirs. Plus – how often do you see graffiti that says “Mazel Tov”! We loved every part of this interactive tour and workshop so much.

The Mint Chip Mama - Old Jaffa

Abraham’s Complimentary Jaffa Walking Tour!

In addition to everything wonderful and amazing I can say about Abraham properties, I’ll add that each also offers a free city walking tour! Of course, since we didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth we had a low bar. However – like everything else Abraham, we loved it!

The Mint Chip Mama - Family Friendly Tel Aviv Israel Jaffa Theater

We hit all the important spots in Jaffa plus our tour guide was funny, informative, patient, and led us around easily. I’m so glad we did this and would highly recommend it.

The Mint Chip Mama - HaShomer Tel Aviv Israel

Family Friendly Food and Accommodations In Tel Aviv, Israel

We had great luck with food and accommodations during our stay in Tel Aviv. As a cosmopolitan city you can imagine how many restaurants exist. With that said some restaurants are closed on Shabbat so make sure to check in advance. Additionally, some fill up quickly so if you’re aiming for a specific restaurant make a reservation. Two of our favorites were: HaShomer and Alma Beach.

Tel Aviv is a great gateway for day trips up the coast to the Northern Region or south to the Central and Southern Regions. Some of our favorites were Ein Gedi, Masada, The Dead Sea, Caliber 3 Gush Etzion, Dig For A Day, and Caeserea

South Israel and Central Israel: There’s Eilat To Do Here!

South Israel District – a huge area to explore with fun galore!

The Mint Chip Mama - Beit Guvrin

This article outlines the route we took to Central Israel and South Israel after five nights in Jerusalem. We visited a few amazing experiences on the way – with an overnight stop to star gaze and glamp in Mitzpe Ramon.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham Eilat Family Room

Next, we stayed in Eilat for a night before venturing to Petra the next morning. Since this was my third trip to Israel I was really excited to visit this fabled place… from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. After Petra we headed north to Tel Aviv for the second week of our adventure to begin!

And away we go…

The Mint Chip Mama - Caliber 3 Gish Etzion

Caliber 3 Gush Etzion

My kids were dying to visit Caliber 3 for their counter-terrorism training experience. During our two-hour IDF Shooting Adventure we learned different ways to be vigilant to terrorism from retired IDF officers. Every aspect of this training was a new experience for us and very exciting (and quite honestly, very scary). My kids loved it. Caliber 3 Gush Etzion is an easy day trip from Jerusalem or Tel Aviv and a perfect stop on your way South to the Central or Southern Regions of Israel.

The Mint Chip Mama - Archaeological Seminars Dig For The Day Beit Guvrin

Dig For A Day

I know I keep saying everything was the best, but the truth is the BEST of the best was Dig For A Day. This was one of the – if not THE – highlights of our trip. Dig For A Day gives you the gift of being a one-day archaeologist on-site at their active archaeological dig. Quite simply, it was incredible. We descended into a cave that was partially excavated and dug until we found bones (!), jaws (!), tiles (!), and even stairs (!) from the time of Chanukah (roughly 8th century BCE).

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel Dig For A Day

Next, we brought up our excavated buckets and sifted through them to reveal even more treasures of history. Our exceptional guide told us that artifacts found – by people like us (!) – have been used to recreate historical objects that ended up on display in museums around the world. After we wrapped our heads around this awesome concept, we toured a fully excavated underground cave used as an oil press and pigeon “farm”. The experience just kept getting cooler and cooler!

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel Archaeologist Dig For A Day

This was by far one of the most incredible places I’ve ever been in my life. These caves – all hidden under the land in Beit Guvrin National Park – were jaw dropping. Additionally, UNESCO agrees! Beit Guvrin National Park is recognized as a World Heritage Site.

The Mint Chip Mama - Abraham’s Tomb

Cave of the Patriarchs

This important religious tomb – and its current structure built by King Herod – has existed since Biblical times. It’s believed Abraham bought this land to bury Sarah. Additionally, it’s believed that Abraham, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Leah are all buried here as well. Some scholars posit Adam and Eve were also buried here as its location may have been the entrance to the Garden of Eden. Droves of people come here to pray and connect spiritually with our Patriarchs and Matriarchs. It’s one of the holiest sites in Judaism.

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel Driving Through Mitzpe Ramon Crater

Mitzpe Ramon – Welcome To South District Of Israel!

Two things on my “must” list for this trip were star gazing and eating an authentic Bedouin meal. My daughter’s Bat Mitzvah theme was space, and she loves all things astronomy. With that said, we couldn’t wait to get to Mitzpe Ramon the First International Dark Sky Place In The Mideast to check it all out!

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel Astronomy Israel

Astronomy Israel

When you’re in a crater – in one of the darkest places on Earth – you can imagine how good the star gazing is each night (vs in New York where it’s filled with light pollution). Since we wanted to continue the space theme of my daughter’s Bat Mitzvah this activity was both a must and on brand. We met Ira from Astronomy Israel Star Gazing and followed him to his seated area inside the Ramon Crater. He then guided us through the night sky by the naked eye and using huge telescopes. Since I never took my eyes off the sky I saw a meteor shoot across! It was so cool. We loved this experience and would highly recommend it. Additionally, next time I’d listen to Ira and wear a base layer since it was February and freezing… but that was a small price to pay.

The Mint Chip Mama - Night View From Abraham Eilat Roof Deck

Eilat: The Southern Most Part Of South Israel

Eilat is a beautiful seaside southern Israeli city. This is a destination to relax, not to sightsee. It was so pretty and with the best vibe. Not only did we have a wonderful day and night there, but the hotelAbraham Eilat – was our favorite and the activities were awesome.

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel

Dolphin Reef Eilat

Our first and third (yes we liked it so much we went back!) Eilat activity was the gorgeous ecological site Dolphin Reef Eilat. This place was heaven and what I see when I close my eyes and picture something peaceful. It was an oasis, beyond special, and one that evoked the feeling of traveling to another time. It felt part Robinson Crusoe and part Swiss Family Robinson.

The Mint Chip Mama - Dolphin Reef Eilat

Dolphin Reef Eilat has a few parts to her beauty. One area boasts a multi-level tree house with lots of lounge areas, vantage points, a restaurant, and an 18+ area for some quiet.  Another area offers a secluded beachfront with palm trees, shops, restaurants, art areas, and even some peacocks to greet you. But my favorite area – the pièce de résistance – presents you with a floating circular wooden pier. This hovering pier allows you to walk over the Red Sea and observe dolphins in their natural habitat.

The Mint Chip Mama - Dolphin Reef Eilat

Because the dolphins come and go as they please you never know when they’ll arrive! This results in a relaxing, exciting, and very beautiful experience. One I didn’t want to leave. In fact, I loved it so much that we returned after our camel ride to see the sunset over Jordan’s mountains across the way.

The Mint Chip Mama - Camel Ranch Eilat

Eilat Camel Ranch

My middle son’s only trip request was a camel ride. Since I strive for authenticity I refused to bow to a “gas station” camel. I wanted the OG experience with a full hump parade. After much research, we decided on Camel Ranch Eilat. Our family camel ride was an hour and a half and split between a desert tour through Eilat Mountain Reserve and a freshly made snack.

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel Camel Ranch Eilat Bedouin Hospitality

Upon returning to the Ranch our tour guide brought us to their Bedouin tent and made us fresh pita. He also served labena cheese, olives, and their unique tea brewed from desert plants. It was the perfect camel riding experience. I loved everything about this place and our tour. Additionally, they offer more adventure options like ATV tours and a full ropes course experience. Plus – as an added bonus – we went on a Wednesday!

The Mint Chip Mama - The Treasury, Petra

Petra – An Easy Day Trip From Eilat

Ever since Indiana Jones bowed as a penitent man inside Petra‘s Treasury I’ve wanted to see it for myself. Petra is an easy day trip from Eilat and super unique. The façade – carved into the side of a Nabatean Kingdom mountain – is a forty-minute walk (through gorgeous carved stones ) from the entrance. As you approach this lost city and it unfolds before you it’s evident why UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site.

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel Land Of Tents Bedouin Dinner

Food and Accommodations In South Israel

We had great luck with food and accommodations on this short 48-hour adventure (more on both in our Israeli Food post and our Israel Accommodations post). In Mitzpe Ramon we loved the authentic Bedouin dining experience with Land of Tents and the super cool glamping experience at Silent Arrow Desert Lodge. In Eilat we loved our dinner at Varkada and the GORGEOUS, made-for-families Abraham Eilat which had the coolest decor I’ve ever seen!

The Mint Chip Mama - South Israel

South Israel Conclusion

I hope this South Israel post helps you plan the perfect family-friendly Israel trip to this region. But there’s so much more! Please look at our full Israel itinerary and other Israel posts: Know Before You Go, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, North Israel and The Golan Heights, Israeli Accommodations, and Israeli Food. September 22nd Is World Perimenopause Day!

Happy World Perimenopause Day!

September is Perimenopause Awareness Month, and September 22nd is World Perimenopause Day! Today we celebrate and validate all the women age 30+ in your life (yes it can start at THIRTY!).

If you’re experiencing any of these glorious symptoms – congrats, you qualify! Symptoms can include mood changes, rage, sleep problems, hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, urinary urgency, joint or muscle pain, brain fog, irregular menstrual cycles, headaches, estrogen fluctuation, and weight gain (to name a few, put your hand down). One graduates into full menopause once you’ve gone a year without a visit from Aunt Flow.

Perimenopause Is A Wake Up Call To Action

Hormones play a big role in our lives and change us at different stages. With that said, Perimenopause is a call to action to care for and pay attention to yourself. “Take care of you”-Kit

You’re usually the last priority. Therefore, this wake-up call is an airport beacon to take back control of your life and start caring for yourself. Putting these things into place now sets you up to thrive as you age.

The Mint Chip Mama - Perimenopause Awareness Day Perry

Takeaways And Action Plan From Perry’s Perimenopause Event

I had the absolute pleasure of attending a Perry event this week where Perimenopause warriors shared their incredible insights and tips for us lucky women at this stage in our lives. Yes we’re lucky, because what’s the alternative?

Here’s what I learned:

-When you’re teenage daughter is a bitch you’re also probably a bitch (ha ha sucks for your husband). TEENS : Puberty :: MOTHERS of teens : Perimenopause.

-YOU’RE NOT CRAZY. It’s just hormones – not you.

-Take a walk. You can’t rage at air and sunlight plus Vitamin D makes you feel good!

-Try eating a plant based died (check out my favorite woman-owned granola company).

-If you don’t lift weights  start NOW. You need to take care of your 90 year old body NOW.

-Mental health is so important. Get ahead of it before it’s a code red.

-Check in with yourself multiple times a day. Be curious & your own advocate.

-You DON’T need to suffer in silence. We’re all right there with you

-Female friendships are hugely important. I mean come on who else can you text to bitch & gossip all day?

-Create daily mindful moments.

-TALK ABOUT IT! 50% of the population is right there with you! Why is there a stigma!? Is there a stigma about puberty? NOPE!

Remember that husband you want to kill when you ovulate? Well… HE needs to do some research too and hand you a bouquet of kale every 28 days. EDUCATE YOU. Educate HIM!

Build A Personal “Tool Box” For Life

Dr. Rachel Goldman suggests we build a personal toolbox to help navigate life. This includes internal and external things and it’s different for everyone.

Do you like hiding in the bathroom and reading US Weekly for a moment of peace? That goes in your toolbox. (Who does that? It’s me, hi, I do that)

Ask yourself:

How am I doing?

What do I need?

What’s not working for me?

Also be mindful of the words you use when speaking to yourself. Don’t be a bitch to YOU.

The Mint Chip Mama - Perimenopause Awareness Day Perry

We Are Women, Hear Us RAGE. I Mean ROAR!

There are doctors certified in Menopause so look for one if yours is not. There are Menopause clinics in hospitals. HELP IS THERE.

Allow yourself to feel the symptoms.

Give yourself permission to go through them.

It doesn’t just mean you’re old.

Be more gentle with yourself.

VOTE for candidates who prioritize women’s health.

Remember EVERY WOMAN YOUR AGE is going through the exact same thing.

Get those chin pubes zapped, breathe, and SLEEP.

Take two and call me in the morning. Also, go get a colonoscopy and mammogram if you haven’t had that pleasure yet.

*Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor. Speak to your doctor – who is a doctor – for better advice.*

Reflecting On September 11, 2001 In Surprising Places

Remembering September 11th, 2001

On September 11th, 2001 I was in Vietnam. I was living in Manhattan but on vacation. Because of the time difference we learned about the attack many, many hours later (we were asleep while it all happened).

When I got home on Sept 17th (on the 1st international flight back from Asia) I loved seeing the outpouring of love all over Long Island.

For some reason, I took a picture of a sign CVS (across from the Syosset Fire Department) put up for the community to honor September 11th.

The Mint Chip Mama - September 11, 2001

Oddly… today I just found myself passing this CVS. Odd because I’m rarely in this area. I laughed that this random sign is such a part of my September 11th narrative.

The Mint Chip Mama - CVS Syosset

I stopped for a moment at the (literal not proverbial) light thinking about that time 23 years ago.

As I started driving I noticed two steel beams in a park right passed the CVS. I quickly pulled over and found a little memorial park dedicated to Syosset’s finest and to the September 11th heroes who didn’t come home that day.

The Mint Chip Mama - 9/11 Steel Beam Memorial

The Universe Gives You What You Need

I’m a firm believer that the universe gives you what you need.

Today is always a weird day for me where I don’t want to do anything and I want to reflect. This year with all the craziness of the world it’s even heavier.

The Mint Chip Mama - Syosset Fire Department 9/11 Memorial

I don’t know why this CVS sign resonated with me but in a world of film cameras you often only had 36 options to find meaning.

It may have been the last few frames in the last roll in my camera and I wanted to finish it and get them printed. I may have wanted to chronical the patriotism. I don’t know. But I digress.

The Mint Chip Mama - September 11, 2001 Memorial

I don’t normally make appointments on September 11th but today I did.

I’m not normally near this random CVS but today I was.

I was thinking how to think about today and I found this park. I like that.

The Mint Chip Mama - September 11, 2001 Memorial Saplings

Today is a personal day for everyone. At this point 2001 was so long ago there’s a whole generation of people legally allowed to drink who were not born on 9/11/01. But if you were there – physically or mentally – I’m sure you have your own story and all that matters today is that you stop for five seconds to be grateful that you’re here to tell it.

The Mint Chip Mama - 9/11 Memorial

I hope one day we CAN forget the war on terror. Sadly today is not that day, but I hope it comes at some point in somebody’s lifetime.

For now as I sit here I think about the bravery of those who went up and did not come down and the holes in the lives of the families reading names this morning.

Rubik’s Race – The Most Fun Addicting Rubik’s Game Out There!

Rubik’s Race!

My First Solve! Rubik’s is an iconic symbol that never goes out of style. Growing up I loved my Rubik’s Cube. I remember sitting with my friends in a circle at recess racing to see who could finish their 3×3.

Because of this, I couldn’t wait to introduce my kids to their first Rubik’s Cubes. Our obsession quickly grew and we wanted to expand looking for serious competition 1v1.

A friend introduced us to Rubik’s Race and we never looked back. This fast-paced REALLY FUN game is like a deconstructed Rubik’s Cube. Your goal is to make your side of the board match the toggle box. Both speed and accuracy is needed to win as you slide your pieces around the board creating the pattern.

As you can see… we are in it to WIN!

I can’t begin to tell you how intense this games gets and how much fun we have playing it.

It’s also a smash hit with all three of my children (ages 8, 10, and 14) making it a constant fan favorite. We often have sudden-death tournaments where we rotate through the family until there is a clear winner (ahem, often me).

If you’re a fan of the classic Rubik Cube you have to give this game a try. It’s been one of our favorites and out on our table for years!

Shop here for this awesome game today!

What Cube should I try to solve next?
