Party Decor Brings It All Together
Undoubtedly, as a content creator we say, “everything is content.” Similarly, as a party planner one can say “everything is decor”.
Party Decor – Decorating The Room
When your guests first enter your party, they see colors and decorations that immediately tell your event’s story. Furthermore, this means everything from the first moment they walk in is part of the experience. Even the smallest detail could have a lasting effect.
This is one of the reasons why party decor is so important. With that said, it’s still very possible to create this special connection for your guests if you’re on a budget (and by yourself!) with a little creativity and the right party supplies.
Let’s Get To Party Planning!
Parties are very overwhelming to plan. But like all overwhelming things in life, you need to take a step back, exhale, and start somewhere to move forward. With that said, sometimes this is the hardest part.
As I mentioned in Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3, planning an event is a big deal! All parties take time and effort to get them just right.

Party Room Decor
Our event’s room had a club atmosphere with lots of customizable lighting, so I was not overly concerned about adding in so much additional decor. I had a specific vision and felt I could DIY the party decor myself. After much discussion with our Maître d’, he confirmed my ideas would translate well and offered to put it all together for us on the day of the event.
My daughter’s theme was space so we started with a color scheme and branched out to anything we could think of that organically matched. We decided on all illuminated decor to give our guests the immersive experience of the sky and stars.
DIY Party Decor For Table Decorations
In my opinion if the guest of honor doesn’t have strong feelings about table decorations this is a great place to save money. With that said, not everyone has the interest or time for DIY party decor, but I’m here to tell you it can be as easy as finding something you like on Amazon and just ordering one for each table.
Equally, we have gotten flower arrangements from our local supermarket for events – not bouquets – actual flower arrangements! If flowers are part of your vision, I bet the floral department could work within your budget and produce beautiful floral arrangements at a fraction of the price of a florist.
Party Decor At The Bar
Without a doubt the bar will be one of the most popular locations of your event. It’s easy to tie in your theme here with some simple DIY party decor items. Similarly, even the drinks can get on board with the theme. I’m a huge fan of signature drinks and with a little creativity you can come up with fun names to get your guests into the party.
Leveraging Party Decor To Enjoy Your Party With All Five Senses
A good party will hit your guests at all five senses. Naturally the food covers taste and smell, so it is up to you to provide the look, listen and feel.
The first thing your guests will notice is your table linens. It is easy to match them to your theme. Don’t discount the power of matching linens to begin telling your story. Each color has an emotion and while it is not necessary to worry about that too much, think of a sea of your color choice and remember it will be an immediate vibe.
Additionally, lighting is something you can play with and even design yourself. Our theme was space, so we created an immersive experience of stars and sky no matter where people sat.
Music is of course where sound comes in and your DJ will most likely have fun lights they can set up as part of your package.
DIY Party Decor Fomo
As we got closer, I started having party decor FOMO thinking that I wasn’t doing enough. I ended up adding in some helium balloons as balloon decoration centerpieces to tie everything together as well as some twinkly lights. This was a good choice and really made the room look festive.
DIY Candle Lighting Decor
Without a doubt if you’re going to do a candle lighting ceremony at your party, even a simple option can be beautiful. We borrowed different size and height candle jars from a friend and bought 3” floating candles and waterproof fairy lights for each jar.
Our Maître d’ filled the jars with water, added some simple colored marbles at the bottom, and submerged an illuminated LED string light into each one. With a space theme it was easy – we picked a gorgeous royal blue – and magnified by the water it looked stunning.
DIY Party Bathroom Basket
One of my favorite parts of an event is being nosy and rummaging through the bathroom basket. This toiletry mecca is imperative in an emergency (depending on how you define emergencies) and easy to put together yourself. It is also the only time I feel the desperate need to use a bobby pin.
Don’t Let Your Party Decor Get Out Of Control
From the start of our party planning, it’s been our mantra to keep a level head as it’s so easy to spin out of control. We’ve tried to remember that while the party is important it is just a few hours, and we still have to eat the next day.
Decor is one of the biggest areas where people get carried away. Before committing to a crazy plan with a vendor, see what your room actually needs. Even better, ask your catering manager who knows the room better than anyone. They have most likely seen every incarnation of party decor set up and the room designed differently for each event.
The most important take away is that with small touches and minimal budget (if you have the interest to do it) you can DIY your party decor no matter the size and it will look great.
Just remember the party will go by so fast you won’t believe it.

Our Party Decor
Mind-Glowing 3D Moon Lamp
We went to an event at a fancy hotel in the Caribbean and I saw these remote controlled light-up moons. Subsequently – like a cat – I sat and played with one for an hour. Even better, the illuminated moon lamp changed color each time I tapped the metal, it was simply entrancing. Even more, it could stay one color or cycle through the rainbow. Without a doubt, they had to be the table centerpieces at my daughter’s space themed party. They were a hit and literally stole the show. My kids couldn’t wait for the event to end so they could put them in their bedrooms.
Mind-Glowing Astronaut Light Projector
With the recent popularity of immersive art exhibits I wanted to give my guests a similar party lighting experience at our event. For this, we used three small astronaut light projectors. We placed one in the cocktail room and two in the party room. While small, they were quite powerful and brought nebulas and stars to life on our walls, floor, and ceiling. In addition, each part of the projection experience was customizable by remote. Since I am always a lover of reusing things, they now sit as night lights in my kid’s rooms. Also, if you want to sound cool you can say it’s a lighting concept.
