4 Important Safety Tips For Your Kids In The Backyard

I’m so excited to host another GUEST BLOGGER on The Mint Chip Mama! Please welcome: Cait Wilker!

I love when Autumn arrives. The cooler temperatures. The bonfires. The shorter days. When it comes to keeping our children safe outside during this time, there are a few things to keep in mind. If your kids are extremely active like mine, you can have them spend the majority of the days outside in your backyard. It may seem harmless to let them run and jump, but there are some hidden areas that might pose a threat. Below are a few tips you want to consider to keep your children safe. As a parent, you will want to make sure to keep these ideas close including being on the lookout for hazards, proper footwear attire, helmet safety, and having a fence in your backyard.

1. Be On Alert For Hazards

Believe me when I say that we all think our backyard is safe for our kids to play. However, you’ll want to be on alert for any hazards that could harm your child on a daily basis. This means going outside and checking the swingset that they are playing on. Are there any sharp things poking out of the wood? Did a wasp nest make its home in the corner? These are things you can avoid by looking for them. Also, make sure that there aren’t any glass or other materials that might hurt your little one on the ground. This also goes for playgrounds that you visit as well.

2. Proper Footwear

This is essential to making sure your kids are safe when they are outside. Similarly, when you hike on trails with your kids, make sure the shoes they’re wearing are equipped to keep them safe. This means that proper walking shoes that cover their entire foot are a must. If it’s winter, you’ll want to make sure they have winter boots that protect them from falling and slipping. Avoid open-toe flip-flops or sandals as they can easily cause your child to slip and fall, especially if they are riding their bike or running. Additionally, wearing open-toe shoe outside could also put their toes in danger! Also, make sure to take your child to a proper shoe store to get them the shoes they need.

3. Sturdy Fence

If you’re looking to upgrade your fence to something a bit more practical, the most common material for a fence is pressure-treated pine. This type of wood is pressure treated to extend life. It also protects it against insect infestation, which can be a huge issue in the southern states. A business called Brazilian Wood Depot offers a variety of hardwoods including this composite deck board option and many others.  You’ll want  to get a quote and ask question if you have any to help pick out a great fence for your backyard.

4. Helmet Safety

Does your child ride their bike without a helmet? That should be a no! Discussing and showing the importance of wearing the proper gear when you go on a ride together is important. If you are unsure about which helmet will work best there are several shops that can help find the best one to fit your child’s head and keep them protected. Role model to your child that you wear a helmet when you ride your bike. This will show them a helmet’s significance. Have them decorate their helmet if they want with stickers to personalize it.

What are some other types of safety ideas you can think of when your children are outside playing? Overall, I think it is important to talk about safety rules when your kids go outside to play. Show them how to pick up items carefully if they see it, or tell a grown-up. While we can’t prevent things from happening, we can educate our children to know what to look for. Spend the time you need to keep this as part of your main focus ensuring they understand.

You Swing Set Me Right Round, Baby, Right Round Like A Record, Baby. Day 29 of My Favorite Things: Our Swing Set From Wood Kingdom

Day 29 of My Favorite Things: Swing Kingdom Mountain Climber swing set from Wood Kingdom

@WoodKingdom Facebook

I would consider the first day of school the official last day of summer. With that said – that does NOT mean we have to say goodbye to one of my favorite things – playing outside.

Moving To The Suburbs

We moved into our house in January between snowstorm D and snowstorm E of the 2013 season. While most normal people think of paint colors, furniture, carpeting or home improvements all I could think of was buying a swing set for my backyard. My backyard!

I Just Wanted My Own Playground

After living in Manhattan for thirteen years – almost four of those with a child – I was busting at the seams to open my door and let my daughter run free. Picture the scene from Funny Farm but not a dog and we have a fence. I started researching a swing set immediately. Plus, a swing set is a rite of passage for a suburban kid, right? The kid plays outside, while the parent watches them from the kitchen and cooks dinner. Wasn’t there a Norman Rockwell painting of this scene?

We Headed To Wood Kingdom For A Swing Set

Asking around – all roads led to Wood Kingdom – a store located in Farmingdale with a huge selection and helpful staff. After much research I decided on a customized PVC (yes PVC DY) Swing Kingdom Mountain Climber. Three swings on one side and one baby swing on the other. Plus a wave slide, rock climbing wall, monkey bars, and a rope wall. I was very excited, I mean my daughter was very excited.

While there I kept upgrading to a bigger and better swing set, eventually settling on this PVC one because it required no maintenance. Ever. That was worth paying a little more to me.

No More Needing To Pack For Armageddon

What’s that you say? I don’t have to pack a bag of stuff and/or put on shoes/pants/a bra so my kids can play on swings? Wa-hoo! Plus there’s that part about it being great exercise. Not to mention fun. In addition, we got a hammock swing for me and that I fit on the “big girl” swings and can go so so so high! Watch me! Watch me! But I digress.

It’s Installation Day!

Given my daughter’s previous backyard was “going to the park” I was eager to get her new shmancy swing set installed. It was so cool when they arrived. On our driveway we welcomed our partially built swing set in the back of a truck with a gaggle of nice guys who drove in from Lancaster, PA. They assembled it in my backyard as we eagerly watched. And then bam it was up – out the door to play!

It’s Everything We Dreamed Of And More

It has been amazing in all three seasons so far. Since it is right in our backyard my daughter can play on it even for ten minutes on a cold day just to get some fresh air and exercise. My son loves the baby swing and having the second arm to separate him makes me feel safe when my daughter has a bunch of friends over and they are rocking out on the glider (an impulse addition that is the surprising star performer) or on the monkey bars.

This swing set makes me so happy. I mean my kids so happy… It is so much fun sitting in my kitchen and watching my daughter play on it. I love inviting her friends over after school and having half a dozen kids on it. It is so big, it still looks like ten more could fit! Plus, I love that I don’t have to worry about splinters or up-keep or walk to a park for some fun. The bottom line is – I simply love this swing set.

It’s My Favorite Thing In My House, Even Though It Is Outside

If I put as much energy and effort into decorating my house, there would be at least one picture hung on a wall after nine months by now. But then I would have to hammer a hole into my wall – which is too much of a commitment.

You Need A Swing Set Too

If you are on Long Island, I high recommend checking out Wood Kingdom. Besides tons of wood and PVC swing sets, they have play equipment, sheds, trampolines, fences, and amazing toys like Air Swimmers (a remote control fish balloon that is crazy awesome fun).

Thank you Wood Kingdom for introducing me to a great, fun, and safe product. You have become one of my favorite things!

I’m Loppin’ On Sunshine, And don’t it feel good (HEY!). Day 7 of The Mint Chip Mama’s Favorite Things: Fiskars Lopper

I guess it was just a matter of time. One day I knew I would find him. I didn’t even know he existed for the first 36 years of my life. Then one day, there he was. Sitting on Amazon‘s Patio, Lawn & Garden page as the #1 most popular in the category gardening, hand tools – my tall, dark and handsome Fiskars Lopper.

Why Do I Need A Fiskars Lopper?

What’s a Fiskars Lopper you ask? YOU being the person – like me – whose backyard was formerly skyscrapers. YOU being the person who has their gardener do the “full shebang” on their property. YOU who don’t generally get excited about gardening tools… Well today’s the day. Know that satisfaction when you pop a really big pimple? If you answered “ew” then I was just kidding… I don’t either. Gross. But if you answered “yes!” Then bring.it.on. Get ready for some satisfaction.

My new boyfriend.

Gardening Is In My Genes

Green thumbs run in my family (we have a group plan with a dermatologist). I spent countless hours at my grandparents’ house meandering around their huge backyard garden. When I was older I helped my mom tend to the vegetable plants we grew in buckets on our deck. However, it wasn’t until my senior year at The University of Michigan when I took the most fantastic class – Practical Botany.  Here my husband would say with an eye roll – “go ahead, brag that it was a FIVE credit class and you got an A”. So, once my family made the big move out to the suburbs, I was psyched to have a huge backyard that I could turn into my own oasis.

A Saturday night at our house looks different from a decade ago.

Now I Have A Backyard. What Do I Do With It?

What’s that you say Mr. Backyard? You are rootier than The Huxtables? (I crack myself up). So what’s a girl to do? I flagged down my neighbor’s tree cutter who recommended I get a lopper. “Sure, a lopper” (I played it so cool). I looked it up and apparently a lopper was all I needed to get rid of roots, branches, anything standing in my way to backyard bliss. I was sold.

A big stumpy example (one of my most proud wins). Stump: 0, The Mint Chip Mama: 1

Enter Fiskars Lopper

I was so eager to start lopping. It was a breeze to use! Even prompting me to tweet the company saying my lopping reminded me of my daughter’s book Not All Princesses Dress in Pink. I was lopping through roots left and right with the ease of a nail clipper. So much so that I was able to clear a big strip in my backyard (bordering a water basin) to plant MY own vegetable garden. It became addicting. Every free moment I had (read: between bedtime and sunset when both of my children were asleep – so like 20 minutes once a month) you could find me out in the yard lopping to my heart’s content. It is very satisfying to not only reclaim my dirt from those roots, but also to cut down branches that were shading my plants and hanging over my fence.

I kind of want to wear my wedding tiara while I do it. As an added bonus it is a fantastic way to get out aggression and for the onetime $45.99 it is much less than the co-pay for a therapist.

While my 4 year old daughter is not of lopper age yet, she’s pretty handy already. #GirlPower

Fiskar’s also offers a whole range of gardening & yard care products; crafting, sewing, and quilting tools, plus a full range of school supplies for kids.

Thank you Fiskars for introducing me to an easy to use and very satisfying product. You have become one of my favorite things!

Fiskars Brand Heritage

Established in 1649 as an ironworks in a small Finnish village, Fiskars has grown to be a leading global supplier of consumer products for the home, garden and outdoors. Available in more than 60 countries, Fiskars products solve everyday problems, making daily home, garden and outdoor projects easier and more enjoyable through superior performance and design.

In 1967, Fiskars revolutionized the way the world thought about scissors. Not only were our orange-handled scissors lighter, more comfortable and easier to handle than heavy forged scissors, they also delivered an amazing leap in cutting performance. This caused many home seamstresses to declare them off limits to the rest of the family — they were only for cutting fabric, only for projects that were truly special. Since then, our orange-handled scissors have become the standard of quality worldwide, selling over 1 billion.

Creativity continues to flourish in Fiskars Village today, where our company first began in 1649. With over 100 permanent resident artists and designers, the village is a hub of creativity, innovation and design. Blacksmiths, industrial designers, ceramicists, glass designers and more all call Fiskars Village their home. And with 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, it has now become the second-largest tourist attraction in Finland.
