Infantile Spasms Awareness Week: Spot The Signs And Move Quickly!

The Mint Chip Mama - Infantile Spasms Awareness Week 2024

Infantile Spasms Awareness Week

December 1st-7th, 2024 is Infantile Spasms Awareness Week (ISAW): “Spot the Signs”, “Time is Brain”, MOVE FAST! Quick Action Can Prevent Brain Damage! *Giveaway Below*

I’m thrilled to partner with TSC Alliance again and provide awareness and education on Infantile Spasms (a medical emergency in a baby’s brain).

Infantile Spasms Awareness Week (ISAW)

ISAW is a time for parents and caregivers to learn about this critical condition so they know what to do if they recognize a symptom. The signs are not always easy to spot. They’re sometimes misdiagnosed as colic or reflux.

Early recognition is key. Every day you delay increases your child’s risk for devastating life-long effects on developmental progress, loss of skills causing significant cognitive disabilities, or brain damage. Parents must trust their instincts and act quickly seeking help immediately. Healthcare providers are on the frontlines—treatment must begin within 7 days to avoid severe developmental challenges.

What Are Infantile Spasms?

-A rare but very serious type of seizure that presents by age two and often peaks between three and eight months.
-Occur in 1 in 2,000 children and can cause catastrophic permanent damage to a child’s developing brain.
-Can be hard to spot and often overlooked.
-Are often misdiagnosed as colic, reflux, or a startle reflex.

To Help Spot Infantile Spasms, Follow The Mnemonic Tool ‘STOP’:

See the signs: Clusters of sudden, uncontrolled, repetitive movements like jerking the mid-section, raising the arms, or wide-eyed blinks.
Take a video: Record symptoms for your doctor
Obtain a diagnosis: Request an EEG from a neurologist to confirm abnormal brain activity
Prioritize treatment: Fast treatment minimizes the risk of developmental delays

Can A Tool Help Spot Infantile Spasms?

The Owlet Smart Sock is a supportive partner tool in helping parents monitor their child’s well-being. While Owlet does not detect infantile spasms specifically, it supports and empowers parents by monitoring vital signs like heart rate and oxygen levels. This provides peace of mind about their baby’s general health regardless of location.

Giveaway!

Win an Owlet Smart Sock and help monitor your child’s vital signs!

To win, from Dec 1-7 ISAW:
