Bruno Catalano Travelers
I was SO excited to view French sculptor Bruno Catalano’s new art installation “Travelers” this week.
New York’s Outdoor Public Art
The exhibit opened May 18th, and remains in residence on Park Avenue medians between 34th – 38th Streets for a year.
Playing with depth confusion and perceptual completion Bruno Catalano offers New Yorkers nine different incomplete sculptures of men in transit.
The sculptures are stunning and transform from different vantage points as Manhattan traffic ebbs and lows behind and beside them.
DIY Walking Art Tour
During this five block walk you can scan the QR code at each sculpture linking and learning more from The Galeries Bartoux.
Many of the sculptures are modeled on foundry workers and friends.
I think the idea is there’s a little bit of all of us inside each of them… but since they’re hollow it is up to us to compete them.
Whoa.
That was deep 😆
From Les Galeries Bartoux meet…
HUBERT III
Like all of us he stops for a moment thinking and questioning his next step
BENOÎT
Carrying with him literal and figurative baggage while always moving forward.
BLEU DE CHINE
A love letter to the workers of Marseille with a nod to dockworkers – of whom Bruno Catalano was one.
J4
Named for a pier in Marseille, it is Catalano’s first monumental piece.
KHADINE
A fan favorite in this series, he looks off to the horizon with hints of his long journey and history behind him.
L’ÉTTOFE DES HÉROS
A faceless sculpture with an internal contrast of darkness and adventure.
PIERRE DAVID
Even with a passion for travel, with each trip you leave something behind. This sculpture stirs this hardship with literal fragmentation.
VAN GOGH
A metaphor for an artist who has given up everything for his passion, somewhat a self portrait.
VOYAGE À NEW YORK
Fading in and out of view as you rotate around it, this sculpture welcome and encourages self reflection.
I hope you can make it over and check these beautiful sculptures out! They’re worth the walk!
